Eduard 1:48 Limited Edition Ultimate Sabre

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
So right at the start of this sig i have a second entry
My main reason is that i don't like the prep work and clean up i get when i am using Alclad paints
The smell isn't really nice either so instead of build the mig first and then the Sabre i decided to build them side by side
If i work fast enough i can paint the Sabre , MiG-21 and my MiG-15's all at once so i will only have to so everything once instead of 3 or 4 times

But anyway this is the kit i will be building
Image
It is a rebox of the Hasegawa Sabre but like with all the Eduard Limited Edition kits there are Eduard goodies like photo etch and resin in the box

Image
A little overview of the kit content
There where 3 sets of PE in there aswell
They where for a Panther Ausf.D but i think the trader that sold me this kit had put them in this box for safe keeping during transport and forgot to take them back out
I don't mind though as i got a Panther kit for them

Image
The clear parts
They look pretty good to me

Image
But there are these lines on the canopy
I don't know if they are supossed to be there or that it should be completely smooth so i need to look into that
Or if you happen to know i will be happy to hear it

Image
The 2 wing sprues

Image
One of the fuselage halfs and some other stuff

Image
The other fuselage half and a pilot
I don't think i will use the figure though

Image
2 identical sprues with fuel tanks and missles

Image
Pylons and engine parts

Image
Too bad there are 4 big epm's in each part
So that will require some filling and sanding

Image
The PE and masks
You can go for more PE wich is sold seperate but i will stick to what is in the box
That is nothing new with Limited Edition kits allthough the now advertise the other upgrade sets on the instruction book

Image
The resin parts
I am not really looking forward to chopping that seat from the castingblock as i damaged seats before while doing so

Image
The decalsheet
Not that many decals for a jet but they sure are colorfull

Image
The instruction book

Image
The version i will be building is this one
The other options look kind of messy to me
With artwork and things like that scattered all over the fuselage
This one looks a bit cleaner and the combination of the blue with the metal looks pretty cool 8-)

And that is all i have for now
I will get building now and hopefully i will be back with a update soon
Untill next time
Cheers,Mark

Like the colour scheme, the blue against the metal looks very cool. Personally I wouldn't weather that, it's too nice to gunge up.

I am planning to do some weathering like a wash for the panel lines but nothing extreme
As far as i can tell from the background information in the instructions this plane was only stationed in the US and later in Taiwan when it was sold to them but it wasn't active in the Korean war so it probably was fairly clean and kept in mint condition

Hi guys
I have a little update for now
This kit is actually very nice to build and i have reached the point of painting with the cockpit and the internal parts

So here is the progres so far
Image
The tub is pretty easy to put together
The instrument panel had the normal raised details for the.instruments but i will use the printed pe so i had to sand that smooth

Image
Next i put the airduct together
There where a few nasty epm's in there that you can fill but i sanded it smooth

Image
I glued the nose wheel bay in place

Image
The inside of the airduct is actually fairly smooth and it is very hard to see where the 2 parts connect so that saves me a fidely sanding job
I left the front of the engine off for now
It will make painting a bit nicer because the airflow won't shoot back when i paint it

Image
And the same was done with the exhaust

So now it is time to paint it all but a buddy of mine broke his compressor and i let him borrow mine for today
He is making a big mural drawing as a suprise for his girl and she is out this weekend so he asked if he could borrow mine for today
So i will get to the painting tonight or tomorrow
But i can build the other parts like the wings and
Anyway thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers,Mark

The F-86 is my favourite jet of the 50's such a good looking aircraft, I couldn't get one as a kid (I made like most I guess at the time solely Airfix) closest was F-80 another nice kit.

This kit looks fairly good but i think i will have some problems when i put the fuselage halfs together
The part just behind the cockpit doesn't fit perfectly and even when i was dryfitting it i had to move it into position
But that is the only thing i noticed to far
The wings go together a lot better but i don't know if the wing section and the fuselage will line up smoothly so i will have to finish up the cockpit first and glue the fuselage halfs to see how that turns out
But once i have that part finished i will post a new update

It would be nice to see it covered in foil (I thinks that's the correct word for it) which will make is shine like the early versions, are you planning on something like that?

 foil
No i will be painting it ,i think i will do a build with foil sometime but not right now
To fully cover a kit with foil takes up a lot of time and i never tried it before so it would be a lot of trial and error

I have the foiled airplane on my bucket list to try a well...I think it was Nige did a cool Mustang like that a while back on here
I agree a Sabre would be a cool plane to try like that.....hmmm  if only I had more time

I will use Alclad paints but i am not so sure if i will their black base this time
I have the feeling it caused some rough areas the last time i used it
So i may use a different black paint but other then that those paints give a nice result if you use them the right way

I'm very happy too see you building this one as it looks a damn nice kit.
Great idea doing them both at once the smell of alclad can be very smelly
I'm in the process of ordering the new Vallejo metal range. From all reports they are good and no smell
I like to know what you think even if it is critique , If you spotted it let me know
Trying to finish what I started, and take part

Parts wise it isn't very challenging
I thoght it would be but the MiG has a lot more parts
But after these 2 builds i am done with Alclad for a while
I heared several good things about the new metallic paints from AK and Vallejo but as i already have these i will use them

Thanks guys
I should have more to show tomorrow once i removed the tape i used to hold the fuselage halfs together while the glue was drying
I have some other parts that are build allreasy so i only have to put those on and take some pictures of it
Sadly this kit is not as good as the MiG-21 i am building along side this one
I allready noticed that the edges of the nose piece will have to be sanded down quite a bit to get it flush with the rest of the fuselage
But if i stick some masking tspe on the details i should be able to get it smooth without loosing any detail or having to rescribe things
Wich i don't like doing in the first place (i really suck at rescribing)
So i will do anything i can to avoid that
But fixing the wing section to the fuselage can be a problem aswell
When i was test fitting it the edges of the bottom part of the wing didn't line up very well but that could have been caused by the fuselage wich was held together with masking tape so it wasn't very sturdy
But i think i will have enough for a update on Sunday or Monday
It depends a bit on the amount of time i need to finish up some other builds and how long it takes me to get the last coats of varnish on the T-34 (atleast if the oilpaints are dry)
Thanks for stopping by and hopefully untill soon

Hi guys
So time for a update
I was hoping i could say the build is going smoothly but it isn't
The kit will need some unplanned work if i want a decent end result
But it still had some progres so here it is

Image
I test fitted the enginetube and cockpit first and had a look how i could best place the weight in there

Image
Image
Image
I then primed and painted the cockpit and fuselage walls
Once that was dry i placed the colored PE and covered it with a coat of Aqua gloss
After that a bit of dark wash by Mig productions and a coat of AK ultra matte varnish

Image
The instrument panel was glued in place

Image
And the exhaust pipe and air intake where primed and painted aswell
I used Alclad paints for this
I used White aluminium for the intake and fan and duraluminium for the exhaust

Image
Getting ready to close it up
I used fishing lead or lead shot as the weight

Image
To make sure it would sit right i placed the nose part on the intake to give the part more points where it connects to the fuselage side
Because there is only a small locating pin on the side of the intake so i thought it could sit the wrong way
With this part glued in place i am sure that it sits straight inside the fuselage

Image
With the intake and cockpit glued to the fuselage i started to glue the lead pellets on the intake
The instructions have a small mistake for this step as the arrow for the location of the weight points to the inside of the intake
Wich doesn't look like a valid option to me :ugeek:

Image
So with all the weights and parts in place i glued the fuselage halfs together
I had to bend a few bits as they looked warped
Because i don't have clamps that can hold this shape of the fuselage without warping it i used masking tape fron the diy store to hold it all together

Image
As you can see i still have a bad fit
The nose piece sticks out and yoi can actually see the shadow in this photo
Buton the bright side there are no panel lines or details near it so i don't have to super carefull when i start sanding it
Allthough i will put some masking tape on the parts that won't need sanding to save me the work of polishing more parts then is needed

Image
Then the wings where assembled
I drilled out the holes for the fuel tanks and the 2 sidewinder pylons
And unlike the fuselage this fits perfectly

Image
The wing section was then glued to the fuselage
The top fits great and there where no problems there

Image
The bottom is a different story though
But i can sand this down to make it smooth with the fuselage

Image
The front of the wingpart fits a lot better then the rear
Too bad i didn't notice the glue on my fingers
But a quick sanding should remove that

Image
And the part behind the cockpit didn't fit very well either
As you can see by the CA glue stains
I had to hold it in place for a while as it kept popping back into the wrong position
But this can be sanded smooth as there will be a PE part covering the entire area

Image
And a gap on the nose wich was filled with some CA glue

Image
So after the filling i placed the elevators

And it still sits like this
My plan is to sand and fill all these parts first
Because i now have the basic plane without any small parts on it i can do less damage when i sand it
So once it is smooth and ready to go i will start with the other parts like the landing gear , airbrakes (wich will be open) and ejection seat and canopy

But that is for the next update
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers,Mark

Hi guys
So a quick little update for now
There isn't that much that changed since the last update except that i sanded the plane and placed some of the small parts
All the other parts where either cleaned and glued together or just cleaned to get them ready for painting
I did this because a lot of parts for the landing gear and the airbrakes will get different colors
But they are not very easy to mask and spray so i decided to paint them first and then assemble them as i don't expect problems with weathering them once they are installed only for painting them

So here is the Sabre so far
Image
All the pieces for the landing gear
There will be 3 major colors here
Grey for the actual leg, green for the bays and silver for the doors
So more then enough reason for me to do things like this

Image
The 2 sidewinders where pretty easy to make

Image
Image
The resin seat looks pretty good
Only the lower part took a lot of time as it had a huge castingblock
The other parts didn't so i used a knife to clean those

Image
Then i placed all the pe for the cockpit area
As you can see there is a big light area in the cockpit
That is the result of the removal of the controlstick
John aka Shortcummins told me i placed the stick in the wrong place and after a check i noticed he was right
So i removed it and placed in the correct place
This damaged area is pretty flat so the seat can be glued on it later to hide it from sight

Image
I had a second thought about the airbrakes and wanted them closed as that would make the decalling a bit easier
But they where too flat and had a poor fit as they left some little gaps
So they will be opened up after all
They wheren't glued though

Image
Some reworked parts for the canopy
The part with the light on it was a large plate with the grey part as a raised part
That was completely cut away and that little part was sanded to the right shape to make it fit in the PE bracket
If you build this kit : be carefull when you make this part
The PE snapped very fast and i had to make a styrene strenghtening part to be able to assemble it

Image
After the PE was painted i carefully glued it into the canopy

Image
The last few bits where painted and the front part of the canopy and hud where glued in place
The canopy itself is still not glued and that will be done once i painted and weathered it all

Image
And besides the plane itself there are these parts that i will paint seperately
I will glue them on cocktail sticks or use some whitetac to do so
But once they are painted most will be installed on the plane

And with that covered it is ready for priming and painting
I will start that next week as i am home alone for a couple of days so i can't bother anyone with the "nice" smell of Alclad paints
I know that i may have sounded a bit negative about this kit on here and on the ISM FB page wich was not really what i ment to say about it
The kit is not the best but it isn't a waste of money either
It looks good but it does require some work to get there
I think that i expected too much from it and a more experienced plane builder can have a lot of fun building this kit
I however haven't build that many planes yet so i was hoping for a smoother build
But i so like the look of the plane in the end
There is room for improvement on my part bit that will come with time
A complete beginner in this hobby may end up putting this back in the box though as the pe and resin do offer some challenges if you never worked with those things before

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers,Mark

Hi guys
Time for a little update for this build
So here is the progres so far

Image
I started out with the regular steps of Alclad paints
So primer , gloss black base and then the basecolor
In this case i used the white aluminium

Image
After some masking i repainted some panels with regular aluminium color

Image
The tips of the fueltanks where masked and painted with a mix of blue colors from the Aqueous range

Image
Once the exterior was painted i masked the open parts lije the landing gear bays and the interiors of the airbrakes
These parts where then painted with Aqueous interior green and some small details where painted in other colors

Image
Then the ejection seat was painted according to the instructions
I did some dry brushing on the actual seat but i toned it down later as i didn't like it

Image
Because the entire landing gear was supossed to ve in aluminium i decided to paint them along with the rest of the plane
The landing gear itself was then repainted with mr metal color aluminium so i have a different shade for that and it doesn't look the same as the exterior

Image
The wheels where painted with black and then the surface that touches the ground was heavily dry brushed with dark rubber fron the Vallejo panzer aces range
The sides where done aswell but not so heavy as the running surface of the tyre

Image
The landing gear was then installed
To me it doesn't matter if it is installed after the painting stage
For the weathering i can reach it well enough and it only would make it harder if i placed before the painting

Image
And finally the PE seat belts where glued to the seat
You need to place the lower belts through the side of the seat but on one side it was closed so i had to open it up wich was a bit of a struggle but they do look nice once they are installed

And that is all i have for now
The Sabre is ready for a gloss coat now wich i plan on doing soon
I just want to finish another cockpit for a other buid so i can do that one ,the MiG-21 i am building and the Sabre all at once
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers ,Mark

Re: Eduard 1:48 Limited Edition Ultimate Sabre

Hi guys
I think it is time for a little update
As some of you may have seen on Facebook i didn't had any luck with the decals
The blue and white striped drcals simply didn't fit and they where more then 1 mm too small so they would expose the metal colored parts on the leading edges and on the back of the rudder and elevators
I'm no rivetcounter but to me that was not exceptable and i took them off again
So i had to paint them
Normally i would choose one of the other schemes from a kit if sucb a thing happens but in this case i picked the only version with a grey cockpit instead of a black one like you see in the other options from this kit

Image
So i got to this point with the decals before i removed the striped ones
It really killed my mojo and i actually hadn't touched it for about a week

Image
But after that week i decided that i would just give it a try and i started to mask of the areas that would get the stripes
To make life a bit easier i used the new white Tamiya tape for the curved areas
The rest was masked with regular masking tape
For the 2 decals i put 2 pieces of together with the sticky sides facing eachother
I figured they would rip the decals off and i don't have spares for those
The first coat was painted with white and left to dry for a night before i could do the rest of the masking

Image
I then masked off the white and sprayed a mix of 2 bleus wich where the closest mix i could get to the decals
Unfortunatly i forgot to take some pics of the white and the second masking session
The good thing was that i did take some time to messure the stripes and the white ones where just a little bit smaller then 2mm (i think about 0.1mm)
So i just used 2mm masking tape

Image
But this is the result of my efforts
It is the first time i attempted such a paintjob and i have to say i am fairly pleased with the result
I did damage 1 white stripe and i had some overspray as you can clearly see on the wings and on the star and bars
But i'm not worried about that
The Alclad coat is not affected by Ultimate Thinner but the Aqueous paint i used will
So with a brush and some Ultimate thinner i cleaned up the overspray and now it is gone
I will have to touch up the damaged white stripe but after that it will get a new coat of aqua gloss to give a smooth surface for the remaining decals and to protect the paint work

But i haven't done that yet
And this is all i have so far
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers

Thank you very much Tommy
It is a bit challenging to do ,atleast for me it was but i don't do this very often
Makes me wonder why those car painters make it liok so easy on TV
There is nothing easy about it if you ask me

I was in two minds about using the yellow decals or paint them, seeing you problems I'll paint them now, well saved by the way :

Thank you
I was a bit bummed that is was needed though
But the ones on the tail and elevators really didn't fit and there is a small raised detail on the rudder
The decal would conform to that either so i decided to remove all of them
I would messure the decal if i where you
Just use it and if it doesn't fit the way it should you can always paint it
I messured the size of the stripes before i trew them all in the bin
Maybe i have got the angles for the stripes wrong but atleast there is something on there

Hi guys
Time for the final update
I finiahed this build today so it is ready for the final reveal

So here are the final steps of this build
Image
Image
After i painted the markings and gave the plane a new coat of aqua gloss i applied the remaining decals
I think they where too thin and there is too much tension on the film
I had to use several id number decals before i finally got a set on the plane with out them curling up

Image
After the decals i applied a new coat of aqua gloss
Just to protect the decals and to give the surface a smooth finish
That makes it easier to work with the wash and to remove the excess wash

Image
After that i applied the wash
I used the Mig prod. Dark wash for this
It is basicly black but because the lines where very shallow i decided to use this wash instead of a dark grey one
I think i would remove too much and then the lines would be too hard too see
Once i was done with the wash and clean up i left it to dry for a night
The thinner i used doesn't need that much time to dry but i don't want to apply a acrylic varnish over it before it is dry
The enamel thinner and acrylic varnish don't like eachother and can cause problems

Image
For the varnishes i picked 2 of them
I used the UV resistant satin varnish from Vallejo for the metal surfaces
For the painted surfaces and markings i used AK Ultra matte varnish
Once that was dry i started to place the seperate parts
Like the airbrakes you see here

Image
I then placed the ejection seat

Image
Then the canopy was placed and the masks removed

Image
And to finish it off i placed the sidewinders on the pylons

Image
And then i called it finished

So that concludes this build
I think a more experienced plane modeller would have more fun with this kit
Because i am very bad at rescribing i had some problems with the panellines at the spots that i had to sand down
And the decals where not working with me but in the end it all worked out
So i can't complain about that

And with that i willwrap up this update
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time and happy modelling
Cheers
Mark
