jims tiger 1 build afv late transport

Hi jim here new to the forum , i will get over to some sort of intro in the new members bit , but for now im going to dive in the deep end and try join on this tiger build,

from the stash i will be doind AFV's late type transport mode and a trumpy rail wagon

A very nice idea here
I don't know anything about the AFV club Tiger as all my tigers where Academy and Dragon kits so that is something to look forward to
And the SSyms is a nice kit but don't be dissapointend when it turns out to be a bit simple
I have build it and it only takes a few hours to put together
But it is a nice subject for a diorama and with a little weathering a real eyecatcher

its a big old wagon , i will have to fill it out , so im looking out for some combat tracks and equipment to stow, need to find some info i know the outer road wheels where removed during transport but im not sure if they were on the steel wheel late tank, im sure i read that the three wheel per axle was ditched when they switched to the steel wheel set up.

But then again it could be wrong altough i think the steel wheel setup is narrow comparred to the rubber tyre setup so maybe there is no removing of the wheels needed

The road wheels on a late tiger didn't have to be removed for rail transport Jim. They did that on purpose to save time. Just the tracks got taking off. They actually had really strict rules about the changing of the tracks of transport. The funny thing is, I can find dozens of photos of tigers being transported with the combat tracks still on.
I don't know if I have any of the late tiger being transported that way, but of the mid and early I know that I do.

yeah ive done a bit of research , late type just switched tracks, early dish type wheels outers were removed and on some occasions only on one side to save deployment time and labour,

i've sourced some combat tracks to coil up so plans are good for what i have in my head

The thing I'm most interested in with this kit is the fenders in transport mode. I've wanted to do a Tiger in transport mode, but preferably an early as they're my favorite. But I will be watching any details of that assembly you show with great interest.

yeah a little bit of a confusion on this bit Michael, there seems to be a stopper pin moulded in the hull side but its not shown in the destructions , ill leave it there till i test fit the tracks, you can see it just under the right hand side of the spring, looks like its meant to stop the tension arm moving to far

here is a pic of the instructions showing the stopper pin just as a circle with a line through it

and a shot with tension arm in place and no stopper pin

and on the kit , arm in place and stopper pin still in place

I'm not sure, I'd say that it would make sense to put that there as a limit would be needed for the arm. The only thing on the outside of the tank in that area is the track pin hammer plate. If the kit provides that part then you would see that pin once the kit is built.

yep the track pin plate is on the hull, ive got a horrible feeling the tension on these arms will pull the tracks too tight and any slack affect will be lost, will look at this tomorrow when im back in the cave

had my son stay overnight so instead of disappearing all day to the cave i spent some time with him kicking my ass on my own xbox-one, took him home then spent a couple of hours in the cave did a bit of etch work , that was fun!!!!!! NOT
will see how it looks after a coat of primer might need to fill a few gaps with sculp

cheers michael, it will need just a touch of filler in a couple of spots, there were no fold lines on the zim so it was just pushed into shape with a sharpened old paint brush handle then glued , to be honest the zimm fits like a glove what with all the raised bumps and lumps that have to poke through the holes , i dont think the set was originally designed for my kit as some of the part numbers dont match my kit , i think its for the other afv late but they are obviously the same tooling

well i had a disaster today ive gone and lost some micro parts of etch, two parts of n22 disappeared off into the stratosphere and n8 snapped as it had to be re-bent, so i have had to walk away, unfortunately it means i cant do the full etched front fenders as i wanted and will now have to go with the second option in the kit and just have the fender edges folded up, it always bugs me that when doing the really fiddly etch they don't have a few extras on the fret, luckily i didn't cut off the plastic fenders first so option 2 has saved my bacon

gun and turret work , i know you wont really be able to see the gun but i like to know ive given it a lick of paint ,

turret roof seem a bit shabby , its sits proud of the turret and there is no weld seam, once the glue has set and i can remove the tape ill have another look but this will need some work to put right

cheers michael, didnt touch the tiger yesterday but finished up the turret and a first spray of primer today, when i say finished up i know most you pros build up the whole thing and paint but i tend to build and paint in sections , the mg mount and spare track ill add and blend in before weathering as with the tools and tow cables on the hull ,
i think the etch zim looks ok now with a coat of paint , needs a few little spots of filler to blend a few areas

Also i managed to grab a cheap set of these AFV late type combat tracks to have on the rail car laid out under the tank,

photo etch hinges for the front and rear track guards, bit fiddly but they are done now,

i found this glue that i have ordered should be here in a day or so, not seen it before but if it does what it says on the tin it should be perfect for etch work, will be giving it a try ,,

it says .....
For use in the watch making and jewellery repair industries. It is a combination fine precision tool and a clear drying, medium-strength cement that will not damage surfaces. The cement is ideal for jewellery, beads, plastic, glass, metal, ceramics, painted or sealed woods and other non-porous surfaces. This is a no-waste product that is ideal for many applications. Full use of the precision applicator tip is maintained by inserting the cap wire into the tube when not use, and by cleaning excess drops from the outside of the applicator with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. This is not an "instant glue." It becomes tacky in 10 - 15 seconds, allows parts to be adjusted, sets in 10 to 15 minutes and fully dries in about an hour. The cement will not bond fingers, and has a slight odour that dissipates quickly. the glue arrived and i have assembled the rear and front track guards with it, ok its a little stringy but not enough to stop me from using it , if its applied directly to the part to be glued then put together its fine and sets in 15 mins'ish and is quite tacky so it stays in place as it sets, i glued some old bits of etch as i made the mudguards will leave them over night to cure now and will try to break apart the old test bit to see how well it really sticks, but i think i like it and its well worth a tube in the stash

thanks for the comments guys i really appreciate it ,

although fiddly i think if you can go through the pain barrier of building them they will add a nice touch to the finished kit , providing they survive to the end of the build, i have a habit of knocking everything off.
I've attached them to the kit now , just need to add some filler or weld seams to the rears where they attach to the tank ,

wheels are ready for top colour , tools are prepared ready for painting , im not using the kit tow and track cables as the flash on them spoils the look of the cable , im using the track cable from a dragon jagdtiger its a very close match and will do , (grey one) and some steel cables from a dragon king tiger kit, as the tiger will be on a rail truck the main tow cables will be in use in a tie down mode,

Tiger has been sat a while ive not been in the mancave , but i have given it a red oxide primer (vallejo red brown) yesterday and today hairspray the base coat and a basic camo pattern , then some chipping, the wheels are currently getting the same process , next up is some washes filters OPR

once again thanks for the comments guys, its great motivation,

i have given her a coat of pledge and added the decals, added a filter and post shading with the airbrush , the colours have toned down and are starting to pull together i think , the chipping is done on the wheels and buffable steel added to the rim edge for buffing later they need a wash and dirt oil streaks yet, next job is highlight the chips and worn areas and to start adding some streaks dirt dust and rusty bits etc
