Pauls ISM Great Wall Hobby 1/48 F-15B/D Photo build

Post by Paul »

So the first ISM Video build needs its own photo log too for the forum.

I guess its a kind of buddy build with myself, with George and his son, George's build thread can also be found here <<CLICK>>

My review of the kit can be found here <<CLICK>>

I have various reference books on the F-15 so hopefully ill be ok lol

Going to build the F-15D 65th AGRS 85-0129 Nelis AFB USAF as i couldn't face all those IAF decals (over 650) i may buy another of this kit and do that version at a later date.

Part One of the video build can be found here <<CLICK>>

First lot of progress pictures, not very interesting but still....
Image

All the cockpit tub, seats, side panels and Instrument displays primed and AB in FS grey and flat black, ill pick the detail out by hand in the next video.
Image

Superb detail on the panels, once dry brushed and the decals added they should look the part.
Image

Cockpit panel detail is just as good, again once the detail is picked out it'll look great.
Image

Now george emailed me the other day regarding the seats not fitting in and i'll admit i was worried for a few minutes when i first tried them, then i realised how they fitted.

Theres three locating lugs at the side of each seat (shown to the left of the red dots on the pic below) these fit into the ejector seat rails (one of the ones i snapped) and then it slides down into position. Be careful though as once they are in they are a pig to get back out so i would treat it as a one shot deal and install them when you totally happy with the seat as i lost some paint getting mine back out, ill respray before the next vid.Image

Hi Paul, well another stunner from GWH, the Vulcan I built, your Mig and this F15 show this manufacturer is going to be a real force in the kit market. Can,t wait to see some paint in the cockpit,. The Tamiya kit has the cockpit as X-13 metallic blue : is this kit the same?. Looking forward to more update,s :cheers2: Dave.

Nice to see this build in the ISM. I saw the build video for this. It seems like this kit goes together very nicely and it should be reall stunner after the completion. Looking foreward to see next video on this.

Right so part 4 was filmed today, got the nose cone weight in, the nose fuselage halves are together glued and filled ready for rescribing (not a lot as you will see in the video when its uploaded). Got the lower fuselage and wing sections glued in position and the intakes glued together too, its starting to look a little like an F-15 now :thumb2:

Oh yeah i finally remembered about the seat decals :eeek: :nena:

ImageImageImage

Lovely seems where the wings meet the fuselage, glued with the flex file touch and flow which worked perfectly 8-)

I know that every one is bussy, but I come every day to Youtube channel or here to see if there any update on the F-15 work. I I said in one of my comment to you, Im no very fan of aircraft build, but this particular step by step keeps me attentive.
Very good job so far, boddy!

So part 5 was filmed today, will be edited tomorrow and uploaded through the week :thumb2:

So on with the upper fuselage, detail is superb on this real nice riveting and subtle panel lines
Image
Image

So i started today, by fixing the seams inside the intakes rather than filling and sanding i used shaped pieces of plastic card to replicate the side walls, saving a lot of time and effort :thumb2: It was glued in position with extra thin, and then cut flush and sanded clean.

ImageImage
Image

I then glued the upper to lower fuselage and glued in place the hump behind the cockpit. Nice fit around with just minimal filler needed in places. I also assembled the intakes.

Image

The intakes were then glued in place
Image

The front fuselage/nose has been left loose for now to make handling easier it'll be glued in place when I'm ready for primer

Great idea about the intakes, Paul. Lateral thinking right there. I'm going to nick that idea in the future.

Hmm bit of a jump in progress since the last update, i had all the fuselage built, canopy masked, primed, pre shaded, the camo pattern done and this took us to the last part shown in part 7 of the video build.

I started filming part 8 last week, panel fading, bleaching and post shading the camo pattern, wasn't happy with it at all though.
Image
Image

Took me about 6 hours to get to this point and i just wasn't happy so i resprayed it and started again lol, sadly i had about 30 mins of video footage for part 8, this was deleted and ill start again on that too :wall:

Thought this time i would concentrate on one colour at a time moving on the the camo pattern colour once all the first colour was dealt with.

I started with panel fading using a lightened shade of the base colour, focusing on the centre of the panels themselves.
Image
Image

Once that was done i then came back in with a slighter darker tone of the base colour and added random figures eights and squiggles all over the fuselage, once happy i then post shaded and added some random darker spots to the panel centres again and this is where its at now. Ill film the same technique on the darker grey as its easier to see on camera :th:

Ok so I sprayed the darker FS 36176 with lifecolour today getting all the Camo pattern sorted, the lifecolour thinned with Ultimate thinner sprayed perfectly. Part 8 will start to be filmed (again, 2nd time lucky :( ) over the next couple day and will be up next week.

Cheers guys the next part of this build is nearly ready for editing so it shouldn't be too long before its up on the channel.

I did some more paint effects to the camo work and then masked off and spread the anti heat metel paint work to the rear of the exhausts.

I also buffed up one of the burner cans, I've left one to show on video, both painted with mr hobby buffalo dark iron, then buffed with finger tip, cotton bud and paper towels.

It was then gloss coated and then decade tonight and this is how it stands as of now

So part eight of the build is all filmed, just needs editing and sending to lee and it'll be up on you tube.

Got the dark dirt wash on, and taken off, happy with the results shows of the details nicely.

I also got the wheel bays sprayed white just needs and oil wash and its sorted.

Landing gear, bay doors and fuel tanks and missiles are all ready for primer and paint.

Got it matt coated tonight using the ak ultra matt varnish an the canopy unmasked, came out well so happy with that too.

Both burner can are now buffed they need clear coating and a wash of some sort added to finish them, and need painting inside too

One more video part after the one and it'll be complete.

So the F-15 is all finished, I've just finished filming the last part of the video series, only 11 mins long as it was just an overview of what had been done to finish it and a look at the finished aircraft.

There was sadly nothing done that was worth filming, basically just painting, declaring and weathering of the ordinance and landing gear. I wish i had filmed the way i weathered the exhausts as it got a bit more involved than i first planned. I sprayed transparent alclad in streaks over the dark iron, then buffed it off again leaving a blue sheen. I then added aocuple black/brown oil washes, followed by a very thin blue filter/wash. Once dry i the over spared from a distance in transparent alclad smoke. Now when hit with light you can see a slight blue tint to the exhausts, its looks quite good and I'm happy how it turned out as before i started i had no idea at all how i would do it lol. The pictures don't do the exhausts justice they look much better in real life

I also had to add the various sensor to the underside of the fuselage and i added some light streaks the the upper surfaces using a cotton bud with remnants of oil wash on dragging it backwards.

The next video build will be a Tarangus 1/48 Viggen, i will do armour after this one i promise but for myself and lee it makes sense for me to build one of those kits.

Anyway enough waffle
