Flower Class Corvette 1/350 HMS Anchusa - Updated 8 Dec

Post by Rob »

A Flower Class Corvette was built in Kent
With photoetch thats exceedingly bent
It got muddled through
Amid puddles of glue
And these photos show how it went

Mirage Hobby 1/350 Flower Class Corvette HMS Anchusa
White Ensign Models Photo Etch
Box and sprue shots and in-box review here http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=2903

My first model ship since bowing up Airfix’s Scharnhorst with a banger in the late 1960s. Also, my first aftermarket Photo Etch.
It was a challenging build and I got in a complete and utter mess with the small parts and PE. But, I learned a lot and, much to my surprise, if you do not look too closely, it looks like a Flower Class Corvette! Painting to follow. One major lesson was, next time, to build in sub-sections and paint as you go and not to leave it all to the end like I've done here :wall:

A summary of the build

First steps on the rear of the ship - note individual depth charges and broken hoist on port (left) side.

Image

The middle bits - funnel, galley roof and bridge

Image

Note broken and replacement boat spar

Image

Gun deck - believe it or not the tiny part at the end of the pointer has to be folded in three stages to form 'shell ready use' stands to line up around the gun deck (cue complete train wreck)!

Image

Mast

Image

Fore and aft compete, all railings on. Boats and bridge are not permanently attached.

Ready for primer and paint

So, there you have it. Certainly not what you might call a 'clean' build and just about every bit of PE is a bit mangled and askew, but, to my not impartial eye anyway, it looks the part!

I'll post updates after primer and during painting and weathering. Bye for now

Excellent work mate.

My Grandfather was on both North Atlantic and Russian convoys and had nothing but admiration for the crews of the "Flowers". He always said that they were brave men to put to sea in them and even braver when they went into heavy seas. It was said that the "Flowers" would roll on wet grass, and very nearly every crewman was at some stage sea-sick.

Will you be doing a diorama or will this be a display case display?

Thanks all for the encouraging comments :th:
Daishi12 - it will be a display cabinet job - but I think quite care-worn

I am so glad that my USS Buchanan kit isn't as small as that! Also mine has less PE on it thankfully lol!

Excellent work for the scale though, and I am looking forward to seeing the painting come on.

Small update

Blue added -same paints as the pink above, not as much red though!

The instructions suggest black for the the hull below the waterline. I used Lifecolor Anthracite UA208 which is my go-to base colour for scale black. A bit of a tidy-up will be the next step followed by decks and details.

Wow that PE is amazing. I am struggling with 1/35 scale PE so God alone knows how anyone can deal with it in this scale kudos and much respect to you for an amazing job.

A great Corvette! I have three ready to start, plus a photo-etch set in 1/350. A bit intimidated because of lack of real experience with PE. Your work is certainly encouraging, demonstrating that all those small pieces can actually come together.

Thanks.
