Tamiya 1/24 Jaguar XJ220

Post by eoinfinnegan »

Hi all, this is gonna be my entry to the group build.
Image

Il never forget the first time I seen this car, I must have been about ten it was was painted in the Jaguar British Racing Green and it was the first time I fell in love, then I went to my Dad and asked him would he buy one  a week later he went out to buy a new car and yes it was in British Racing Green but unfortunetly it was a little mini copper  but I must say the hole family loved that mini.
To me the XJ220 is the most beautiful supercar of all time
Anyway Il bigan the build when I finish up my B17

Here is some info from Wiki

The Jaguar XJ220 is a two-seater supercar produced by British luxury car manufacturer Jaguar from 1992 until 1994, in collaboration with the specialist automotive and race engineering company Tom Walkinshaw Racing.[2][3] The XJ220 held the record for the fastest production car throughout 1992 after recording a top speed of 213.1 mph (343.0 km/h), before being superseded by the McLaren F1 in 1993, and held the Nürburgring production car lap record between 1992 and 2000 with a time of 7:46.36.[3][4][5][6]
The XJ220 was developed from a V12-engined 4-wheel drive concept car designed by an informal group of Jaguar employees working in their spare time.[3] The group wished to create a modern version of the successful Jaguar 24 Hours of Le Mans racing cars of the 1950s and '60s that could be entered into FIA Group B competitions.[7] The XJ220 made use of engineering work undertaken for Jaguar's then current racing car family as well as the engineering experience gained from the MG Metro 6R4 rally car, produced by former Jaguar sister company Austin Rover Group.[8]
The initial XJ220 concept car was unveiled to the public at the 1988 British International Motor Show, held in Birmingham, England.[9] Its positive reception prompted Jaguar to put the car into production; some 1500 deposits of £50,000 each were taken, and deliveries were planned for 1992.[3][8]
Engineering requirements resulted in significant changes to the specification of the XJ220, most notably replacement of the Jaguar V12 engine by a turbocharged V6 engine. The changes to the specification and a collapse in the price of collectible cars brought about by the early 1990s recession resulted in many buyers choosing not to exercise their purchase options. A total of just 275 cars were produced by the time production ended, each with a retail price of £470,000 in 1992.[3][6]

I decided to start this build yesterday as its been sitting on my bench teasing me, so the B-17 is on hold.

Here are the sprue shots
Image

Image
Image

Its a nice kit considering it was released back in 1993, theres no flash on any of the parts and there all very crisp, the only problem is the bloody seam lines

Iv been working on the engine so here is the first parts of the sprue
Image

After putting the engine block togethere it was sprayed with Revell Aqua 99 Aluminium and the letters where painted with Tamiya XF11 chrome, it was giving a wash of thinned black enamel
Image
Image
Image

I wanted to add in some wires so I got some pics of the net to use
Image
Image
Image

For the wires I used .5mm lead wire
Image

The brass parts I added in my self with small bits of sprue
Image
Image
Image
Image

The last thing Iv done tonight is bore out the exhaust, I forgot to take a before shot :ooops:
Image

Im gonna do some drybrushing around the black framing and maybe add in more wiring.

So thats it for now, thanks for looking

Thanks for the nice comments guys :thumb1:

I must say im loving this build, every part goes togethere so well. Il have to pick up another Tamiya car kit soon

Anyway here are pics of the engine in its housing

Image
Image
Image

After I finished up the engine I decided to give the body its base coat which was Revell aqua 57 grey which went on extremely smooth
Image

Next up was the interior, once again it was very straight forward. The colours used where XF-19 for the seats and most of every where, then the floor is XF-75 i think and dash was XF-22
Image
Image
Image

The after finishing the interior some test fitting with the body
Image

Now for the scary part, this the part that has always gone wrong for me in the past when doing cars and thats painting the body but thankfully it went well. My daughter picked the colour so she wanted red so I decided to use XF-7 mixed with some XF-11 chrome before going back over it with X-27 Clear Red,
It turned out looking good but the pics aint great, il take better ones for the final reveal

Thats where im at, im gonna take the weekend off now.

Thanks for reading

After a stressfull week I finally got some work done over the weekend,

I painted the glass-work on the inside with X-18 Semi gloss black, the masking up was a pain  even though it looks easy, I also used Tamiya clear red and orange for the lights.

Iv fitted the windscreen and rear glass and I must say they dont fit well at all, the rear glass just dosnt look right same with the rear vents under the glass, another thing is the wing mirrors have no fit points so you just have to take a guess at where they go so I went through some pictures and found out, oddly the passenger side mirror is like all cars on the door but the drivers side mirror is almost on the front fender above the wheel...I never noticed that before :

Here are some pics

Image

I made seatbelts from Tamiya tape and some scrap PE
Image

The Wheels where srayed with Humbrol Aluminium Metal Cote
Image

I sprayed the roof glass with Tamiya smoke to tint it, its not perfect but its ok

Here is something I forgot to post earlier in the build, The car body comes on 3 main parts the upper then the lower parts where the air intakes are on the sides, These just butt up togethere which make a very weak joint so what I did was first I glued them with Extra Thin and held them in place for about 20mins (holding something like that for that long aint good) then to add strenght I used thick super glue like welds on the inside seams. I worked really well so Iv done it around the other parts of the build that needed strenghtning.

Here is the inside shot
Image

Thats where it for now, Iv just giving it two coats of Klear and will give it one more before I hit the hay,
Iv just a few more things to do and then its done and dusted so I hope to have it finished up tomorrow.

Thanks for looking

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Jaguar XJ220 **Finished**

Post by eoinfinnegan »

Well im all done with this one  To finish up after bringing it all togethere I gave the door seals a wash of Reeves Ivory Black water colour and that is that :D

I really enjoyed this build, it took me well out of my comfort zone as I mainly build 1/72 WW2 aircraft, the last car I did was over a year ago and it didnt turn out as planned :bash: But now I have two Ferraris lined up for building soon thanks to this group build.

The kit its self was very good, the seam lines on the parts was a bit of a pain to clean up and the glass wasnt a perfect fit but id easly build another one, I cant fault the detail on the parts which are fantastic. Its an old kit 1991 but if you come across one pick it up, you wont be sorry, just glue the headlight covers closed if you dont want them to moveble..they just dont sit right

So here she is, il post more picture in the reveal section
Image

Thanks for all the kind comments along the way, no I better get stuck back into my B17 for the bombers GB
