I wasn't planning on building this kit, but when I found it cheap at the hobby store and a resin cockpit set for 50% off I thought I would give it a shot. The kit decals are really old and yellow, so I need to get some new ones also I'm going to try to get a resin landing gear bay as the kit one is completely bare. The rest of the kit looks pretty good with some nice surface details considering the age of the kit.

Cool, looks like a nice kit...I was debating with myself either Hasegawa or Tamiya but finally decided on the Tamiya kit.
Will be very interesting to see this one come together.

Lycka till!!
Good luck!

:cheers2:

Now that I finally have the last bits for this build I can really get started.

First thing to do was to cut out the cockpit to make room for the resin one, the instructions where a bit vague where to cut so I removed a bit to much around the instrument panel.

Image

Image

I used some Milliput to fill the gaps and then used thinned Tamiya putty to smooth the result.

Image

Image

The kit landing gear bay are sparse to say the least, and the front one has a big, nice EPM in the middle. So I'm replacing that with resin as well.

Image

So after a bit of cutting to get rid of pour plugs on the resin parts as well as cutting out the kit ones.

Image

Image

And fitting the resin ones. The fit of the front one was good however the front wall of the main was a bit small so that will need to be filled with some Milliput.

Also got a new set of decals, for the F-16s used by Greece, thought they had a nice paint scheme that is a bit different from the normal ones.

Thanks guys!

Have done a bit more work, first was to fit the front landing gear bay. Since you need to cut out the plastic one, the resin also has part of the inside of the intake. The fit is not the best and needed a couple of mm of filler. I used Milliput as it's a two component filler and shouldn't shrink like a normal one component, like regular Tamiya putty.

Image

This was then sanded and given a really thin layer of Tamiya putty just to smooth the edges.

Image

Image

The fuselage was a bit warped and needed a few rubber bands to close.

Image

Image

It only needed a little bit of filler in the front, I think this could have been avoided if I had spent a bit more time fitting the cockpit because when I test fitted it with the kit cockpit it looked like it wouldn't need any filler.

Image

Also got the landing gear bays painted, just sprayed white and detail painted. Finished it off with some AK landing gear wash.

The progress on this has been really slow lately since I needed a mask set that I finally got the other day so now I can start painting.

Image
All build and masked waiting for primer.

Image
Used the Badger primer for the first time for this. I have been thinking of getting some for some time but it cost quite a bit here in Sweden. But I went and got a bottle today, wow, now I understand why everybody is praising it so much. Sprayed perfectly and gave a really nice and smooth finish.

Thanks!

Managed to get some paint on it, was a bit unsure about the colors to use. The decals says that the light grey blue should be FS35237, but I think both the Vallejo and Gunze versions of this is way to grey so I mixed something that I was happy with using Gunze H337 and H323. The other colors are MIG Ammo FS36270 and Tamiya XF-20. I did have some paint peel off when I removed the masking, this was around the cockpit where I had some over spray so I will need to touch up those areas.

I have touched up the spots where the paint pulled off, then added some post shading using Tamiya Smoke and also added some light streaks using the smoke. Now it's time for decals, luckily it's not too many.

Have managed to get quite a bit of work done on this. First got all the decals on, most of them went well, however two where missing all the carrier film so I couldn't use them. And the decal instruction could have been a bit better, like the lines on the top that has no numbers and nothing to tell which goes where.

Image

Image

Then added a second coat of aqua gloss followed by a dirk dirt wash.

And finally a flat coat.

Painted the engine in a few different metal colors, will need to add a bit of weathering.

That looks very nice
but just to make sure i understand it
Did you used the tamiya smoke on the panel lines after you painted the camo colors
and is that in a similar way you would do pre shading but on top of the camo instead of under the camocolors

The idea was to get something similar to the effect of pre shading, but also adding some streaks and dirt at the same time.
