It's time to explore the great depths of the oceans with Fitchen Foo's Fantastical Fish-shaped Submersible.

This is a really nice resin kit, the casting is almost perfect so it should be a fun build.

This will be all steampunk, everything in copper and brass and such. I got it from https://industriamechanika.com/shop/ they have some odd subjects and really well made resin models.

They can be a bit dear in price, but they are just so well done and you won't find the like anywhere else.

Ive found in general and with limited experience resin kits are more expensive but cover a more diverse subject matter than styrene kits.
I really like the look of some of these kits but im a little nervous to be working an all resin kit.

I've finally finished my PTO build so now I can concentrate on this a bit more. There was a minimal amount of clean up needed, some sanding and just a couple of small spots that needed filling, using super glue. But some of the rivets where removed as well, so I drilled 0.8 mm holes and inserted resin rivets, they are a little bit smaller but they are close enough.

Image

Image

Image

I then drilled a 3 mm hole in the top of the interior. The plan is to put a small LED in there as it will be really hard to see the interior though the small windows without it. I then painted it in Alclad copper, now it will need some detail painting.

This is one cool kit! I can't wait to see how it progresses... and it reminds me that I really need to get some steampunk kits.

Thanks guys!

Have pretty much finished the interior, only thing left is the skipper. Detailed painted all the bolt heads and couplings in AK True Metal Brass, and the pipes in gunmetal. The floor was painted in a dark wood color and then a couple of lighter colors where dry brsushed to add some wood grain, I might try to add a bit more as it doesn't show as much as I would like. The PE dials where treated in Ultimate burnishing fluid and the lightly polished to bring back the brass on the raised bits.

Also did a quick test of the light, still need to finish drilling the hole for the wire.

Damn that is looking sweet, the burnishing fluid and polishing of the PE really makes it stand out and yet it just sits perfectly next to the alclad lovelyness, a perfectly decadent interior

Progress has been a bit slow on this lately, but I've finally finished the inside so now I'm ready to start painting all the copper on the outside.

Image
The skipper where airbrushed blue and brush painted a medium flesh color. Then drybrushed in lighter blue and light flesh and finally given a dark black/brown oil wash.

Image

Image
All build up waiting for paint.

Image

Image
There is a hole missing in two of the small PE fins, so I had to cut the bolt head off the resin bit and then glue it on the PE part.

Thanks! Just had to pause this so I could finish my floaty thing. But now this thing is on top of the to do pile.

Have started painting the outside, starting with Ultimate black primer, some of the panels where then painted with Alclad gloss black to give a bit of variation to the copper.

Image

Next everything where given a coat of Alclad copper.

Image

Next I painted some of the panels with a really old Alclad copper, I think it's a bit over 10 years old and has started to go dark and green. Also mixed some copper and MR Paints black and added some mottling and streaks. It's pretty hard to see it in the pictures, I didn't want it too obvious just a slight difference.

Image

Image

And a mock up with the rear fin.

Image

And a little teaser of something else I'm working on.

I have to say, I've dabbled with some AK metallics and some Alclads, and the Alclads are fast becoming my go-to for metal. Your copper plating looks slick, the primer and "vintage" variation you've used is going into my playbook :th:

That's a really unusual kit - I don't think I've ever come across it before.

Great work on the interior and the copper finish is simply breath-taking... I think I might need to go and persuade my postman to get some alclad metallics - I'm assuming you've airbrushed them here so please correct me if I'm wrong, but do they brush on ok as well?

The Alclad colors are super thin and airbrush ready. Sadly you can't really brush paint with them, I know some people have brush painted really small parts like the door handle for a car or the inside of a light with pretty good results. But anything bigger then that I don't you will get any covarage.

Little bit more work done, started with a black oil pin wash and then used some of the AK True Metals to add more variation to the panels. Just added a small amount to some random panels and then used a piece of kitchen towel to rub it in and polish it. Tried to not cover the whole panel to have some variation on each panel. Still really hard to photograph this thing, it's too shiny.

Progress is a lot slower then I would have wanted, but I managed to get started on the weathering today. Started with applying a few coats of chipping fluid, when it was dry I applied some light green color along the panel lines and around some rivets.

Image

Then using a damp wide flat brush I started to remove most of the green.

Image

Some of the green didn't come off as planed so I used q-tips and Ultimate thinner to clean up the paint and also remove a little bit more of the green.

Image

Now I need to add some detail painting, mostly in brass and then a bit more weathering.

That is really starting to look awesome with the tonal varience and weathering, the corrosion looks spot on to me ... im loving this build and finding it really hard to resist attempting my own build ... would look great next to a Nautilus ..

Great work on the verdigris!

I know that if I'd created that wonderful copper finish I'd be really nervous about trying to weather it.

Just over one day left, really need to get this done!

Work has been way slower then I would have liked but it's getting there. have done a bit more burnishing of PE parts. The parts where the lightly buffed to bring back some shine to the raised parts.

Image

Image

The big casting plate needs to be curved, to do this I placed it on a Ultimate sanding sponge and rolled the handle of my x-acto knife over it a couple of time.

Image

Image

The windows where a bit cloudy, so I had a go to try and make them a bit clearer. This failed badly and left the windows useless. So I 3D printed new ring and cut out some clear plastic to use for the windows, also added some PE bolt heads.

Image

Image

Image

I also need a small base for this, both to hide the electronics and the fish can't really stand by itself without falling over. So I made a small box from some left over wood and Styrofoam, I added a aluminium tube that will hold the fish and I can also run the wires through it. Since the wires goes in on the side if the fish the tube needs to bend 90 degrees. As thin walled tubes can be a bit hard to bend I made a quick 3D printed bend that the tubes fit inside, should be enough to hold it. I covered the top of the base with a thin layer of das and then added some rail road gravel.

Image

Image

Image

Only things left now is install the electronics add some streaking to the fish and see if I can find something more to add to the base.

Thanks, I just wish I had more time, I might add a bit more to the base after the deadline. But for the SIG I'm calling this done.

I wanted to have something more then just gravel on the base, so I made a really quick 3D print of a treasure chest and then gave it a quick paint job. To have a nice treasure inside I sharpened a aluminium tube and used it as a hole punch and made a bunch of "coins" from gold colored paper. Most of the chest is just filled with a sponge and covered that with some aluminium tape just to have something shiny. Then all the coins where glued on using PVA.

Image

Image

Image

Added the chest to the base, also added some of the PE sea life that came with the kit.
