Revell snow speeder diorama

Hey everyone. As a little distraction from my sci-fi SiG entry I started a new project. Unfortunately I didn't take photos from the very beginning, which is the reason why I'm posting it in the wip section and not entering it in the SiG.

The model is Revell's tiny snow speeder. The molding and fit are quite good, just like all of those small kits. (I've already built two of them: Tie Fighter and Tie Interceptor)

Here is a first dry fit of the cockpit and the upper hull.
Image

During the building of this thing and while watching Ep. 5 again, I got the initial idea to do a diorama out of it.
After discussing the idea with Stuart (Primus1), he practically forced me to go through with it. :D

So, this is the scene I will build, but we'll get to that later.
Image

Of course the build started with the cockpit. I didn't do anything fancy here.
It was primered with black Ultimate primer, slightly drybrushed with silver and then I gave it
a wash with overthinned Vallejo MA USAF light grey (to kind of simulate the Ultimate concrete wash, which I don't have).

Image

The pilots where primered by hand (Ultimate grey primer) and then hand painted. That could have gone better,
I just don't have that much experience with figure painting.
Image
Image

The cockpit was finished up by Vallejo brown wash on the pilots to rough them up a bit.
Image

Next was masking the canopy. This also could have gone better. I scratched the clear plastic
on a few spots when my hobby knife slipped. But like every other mistake I make on this model,
I will use it to my advantage in the end.
Image

The building stage is now finished. I had to use some filler on the bottom where the two hull parts meet but
that was entirely my fault because I forgot to remove some ejection marks that prevented a tight fit ...
I then covered up the cockpit with some tape and now it's ready for primer.
Image

All primered up with Ultimate black primer. And it's true, what they say: everything looks badass in black primer. :pistols:
Image

For the color coat I wanted to try something new. I used "black basing" a couple of times before as a simple preshading without
overdoing panel lines. But for the snow speeder I want to do a really worn look and get more tonal variation in the top coat.
So I started to do a marble coat with very thin paint and low pressure and working really close to the surface. That might have worked
better with laquer paint or properly thinned tamiya paint, but all I had available was the same Vallejo model air USAF light grey
that I had already used as a wash on the cockpit. I thinned it with Ultimate thinner roughly 50/50 but that led to tip dry very fast so I
had to wipe off the needle nearly every 10 seconds. Due to the tip dry the spray pattern is not consistent over the whole surface.
Next time I will try to use a bit of retarder in the mix.
If anyone has a tip on how to use Vallejo model air for this kind of "detail" work (i.e. spraying small and in thin coats), I would be glad to hear it.
BTW, I used my H+S Evolution with the 0.2mm needle for this.
Image

After I had the surface covered I sprayed more coats with the same paint until I had the coverage that I wanted.
And that is also where the model itself stands for now.
Image

In the meantime I did some layouting for the diorama and prepared a base for it.
Image

Here's a rough mock-up of how it might look in the end.
Image

Now I need to do some experimenting and finding a way to properly represent snow and smoke.

Thanks for looking. :hi:

Looks like this'll be a cool display (no pun intended, lol!) good luck with it buddy!

Thanks a lot guys.

There will be a lot of experimenting involved as this is my first diorama attempt. But I will do my best to make it look cool.

Today I started work on the diorama base.

I put on a first layer or air drying modelling clay.
Image

Then I wrapped the model in plastic wrap and made an imprint in the clay where I want it to sit later on.
Image

I know, it's not very impressive right now, but as soon as that clay is dry I will build up the landscape some more using either more
clay or paper mache (not sure yet, what will give the best results).

Thanks for looking guys.

Ok, now it gets interesting.

I damaged the model ... on purpose. I want to simulate the impact damage to the front left side from when the speeder crashed into the snow.
Maybe I should have done that before priming and before I painted the bottom.

And remember: boiling water is not hot enough to soften styrene to a level, where you can tweak it really well. :naughty:

I let it soak a bit in the hot water and then gripped the front part with a pair of pliers and tried to bend it to shape, but unfortunately it ripped at a couple of places.
Image

I really like the overall shape of the damage, so I think with some clean up, I can work with that.

I started by filling the largest gap with some thin sheet styrene. I'll let the glue dry and then do some sanding, more filling and sculpting.
Image

Some more styrene added.
Image

I really hope that this will work out the way I imagine.

Thanks for looking guys.

Next update:

I cleaned up and resculpted the impact damage. I used Apoxie sculpt to fill and reshape the part.
Here it is with a first coat of primer.
Image

While that was drying, I worked on the canopy. I want do display it partly open, so I separated
the front and back. That took a lot of work with saws and a knife. The canopy is very thick at the back
and the shape I tried to cut was not the easiest (going around the molded "hinges"). And of course close
to having cut through everything, the back window broke completely. :shifty:
No problem, as in the movie scene, the back window is completely shattered.

Next I reglued it in a slightly open position and reinforced the connection with a strip of styrene.

Image

And here you see the progress so far from a few different angles.

I would love to hear your opinion on that, positive or negative. I can take critique. ;)

Thanks for looking guys.

I like it, but the cannons are a little crooked ;)
Good to see someone do a different take on this kit
I have the perfect music to accompany you as you build this

Thanks, Scott.

Originally I wanted to do just a quick weekend build of that thing. Now it has turned into a constantly mutating
monster. There's always some new crazy idea creeping up. I will hopefully post one of those later on.

Heh, sometimes you just gotta listen to the kit and go big. This is awesome.

Thanks buddy.

I really enjoy this, although I feel a little guilty for not working on my Sci-Fi SiG build. :?

You already have a massive seal of approval from me but this is turning into a very cool build ! I love that its progressing of its own accord and your just rollin with the punches, great job.

So the first crazy idea is almost done. I will post photos of that later on.

But the next even crazier idea is already in the planning stage ...

Finally finished up the next part of this build.

Reviewing Ep.5, I found a scene, that I liked even more. The moment, when Luke grabs his light saber before the
speeder is smashed by the AT-AT.
Image

This meant, that I could not use the pilot figures I had painted before. Instead I decided to to some
plastic surgery (pun intended!) to a spare figure I had from a second kit.
I cut off the legs and arms and rearranged them to closely match the pose in the reference.

Image

And propped against the speeder.
Image

And here is Luke in all his badly painted glory:

And lastly how it might look in the end (unfortunately still without paint but a lot of dust on the speeder)

Thanks for looking, guys. Stay tuned for the next episode.

I think that is pretty darn good :thumb2: Awesome photo scene to use as inspiration
Love you were able to modify the figure to suit your needs
I use a really fine black pen to outline details on figures..like Luke's leg belts.
I cannot paint as straight as a permanent felt

That's...that's just awesome. Great work on sawing a Jedi in half. I can't wait to see more!

Thanks Scott and Jason, I really appreciate your comments.

There is still one important part, that I have yet to make to complete the scene. And I'm not speaking of the snow. ;)

I won't go into detail yet, I'm not sure that I can pull it off...

I am hoping it is the smoke...got some ideas if ya need, but will keep my mouth closed until asked ;)

Of course there will be smoke. But that's not what I was talking about.

And ideas are always welcome, if you'd like to share. :-)

Cool idea for a Star Wars diorama. Some nice scratch building too. Awesome crash damage done to Speeder.
