Excellent! I was so bummed when you couldn't do last year, the 2015 reveal vid with your CD jewel case racer was the first one I watched after making it through Paul's 109 build. Then I signed up for the forum.

Looked at this one myself for this year but I went with what was already in the post (no new kits in 2017...). Was thinking about doing the "Friendly Persuasion" from the pilot episode of Amazing Stories:

Image

I'm a little tapped out on scratch building energy to make the cartoon wheels, though, anyway ;)

Hooray for more adventures in BMF! I'll try and be quiet over here and let you work...

Not to jinx myself, but BMF is pretty easy. I did a whole scratch 747 in foil and glue.
Biggest problem here is anticipating the seam positions as the mould is all smooth with no rivets demarking the various panels

Edit: nope I am wrong, there are panel lines but no rivets. Need a little Rosy Riveter!

Working on coloured portions of the wings and adding lead foil weight

Image

Interesting thing I discovered with BMF...it takes Sharpie ink very well.
So I inked the BMF with red sharpie and then applied as normal. Burnished ok and then touched up any areas of rub off

Image
I have used the black chrome BMF for the black areas....meh it is ok.
I think black felt on BMF might look better

Moving swiftly along
Showing a BMF panel application. I have cut this a bit larger than the area needed and then trim it back with super sharp blade. Burnish it down with the Tamiya cotton tip.
Image

You can keep the trimmings for smaller applications, it will smooth out evenly if you are careful with it.
Almost done all the topside wings panels

BMF is a bit tedious, but actually kind of fun.
My most hated part is all the little sticky cuttings that get all over the place and on me...Just like masking

You photos make it look easy......
Flat surfaces, piece of cake, smooth as a lady's....well pretty smooth
The compound curves are a bit more challenging.
You gotta hide seam joints, not make the foil bend too much so it tears and then get everything smooth with no bumpies
I put the bits of aluminum down with thought of how the guys and girls would have done it when they made the big bird
I got her to here tonight:
Image

Hard to photograph all that shiny stuff...glare,reflection and shadows. Going to need to break out the photo booth!
The engine cowlings are a B, not sure I like the cockpit frame either
And then I remember it is a flipping egg build for Easter fun
I am working out using BMF for WHEN I do a P51 in it
BMF does work really well for masking canopies. You can really smooth fine and see the mould lines

Making sure I take photos of tonight's progress
Working on the belly
Image

And all foiled up, other than black stripe on wing's leading edge
Image

It is actually now quite a bit heavier with all that metal foil on it...has a good weight in your hand
Touch ups of colour and streaks to do after the top deck gets foiled

It is pretty easy, kind of relaxing and fun. If you don't like something, just peel it back off
For aircraft you can make the panels and vary the look of them.

I am surprised at how quickly I dull the knife blades though...all of a sudden you are dragging through the foil rather than clean cutting.
I got in big trouble as I dragged my elbow through the cut off pile and carried hunks of foil all around her clean house...not a good scene ;)

My missing airbrush shipment was the deciding factor for the foiling method.

I have no idea what happened.
Got prompt shipped notice from kind folks at Ultimate, then nothing. When my spray booth arrived from the UK, I though, hey Ultimate order should easily have beaten that. Then inquire and find that it was undeliverable for some reason. We were open that day, no notice came, no paperwork, nothing. After 18 days they send it back...hopefully to the right address
NOT Ultimate's fault, it is all Canada post

Speaking of Canada post, I have to try to send that package again

USPS had it in BC in three days, four weeks later it came back. Weeks.

I have got her pretty much all foiled other than a few touch ups after full assembly.
I have also done some decals.

This has been fun and all, really an exercise to see if I could do it and the full application of the technique.
BUT, I just watched Paul spray Mr Color GX2 metallics in a video review and though "why the hell go through foil???"

Another former ISM member on utube took forever, literally, to test spray a bare metal paint scheme on an aircraft and I was like, ok I have foiled this leasurly over the past week no problem compared to all that babbling, decanting and testing and retesting BS taking forever.
Metal gives a metal look....so foil makes sense. But, it is very difficult to wrap curves and some contours...wing ends for example are tough as foil folds on itself and then little bits chip out :pistols: rrrr

I will probably not do this on another aircraft as a full foil event, just details and certain areas . I love it on the dorsal surface of wings, using two different shades of foil...lovely.
The advent of new paints has made metal surface an easier process IMHO

Hm...I have a guess as to who that might be.

I have a 1/144 B-17 I desperately wanted to do at Christmas but couldn't. Was thinking of trying this but now maybe just on the flat bits ;)

Exactly...on the flat bit. It is a dream on those nice flat spots with panel lines.
Next time, I would do a Mr Color spray on the entire aircraft and then detail the panels I want with foil

I could not make it through those videos...and in the end forgot what worked for him and what didn't  So slow :ooops:
