Battle of Prokhorovka: Kursk July 1943

Post by Coen »

Battle of Prokhorovka: Kursk July 1943

This was my entry into the youtube Battle of Kursk GB Operation Zitadelle groupbuild of 2014.
It shows a group of Soviet infantry dismounting a KV-1s Ehkranami (add on armour) and charging up a rail embankment, while a T-70M scout tank and commander shout orders from the top of the berm.
This is set just south and east of Prokhorovka in July of 1943. It was pretty much the furthest point of the advance for the German army during the offensive and was one of the most insane tank battles in history.
I wanted to do so much more but the GB was only 2 months long (the length of the historical battle) and that curtailed the elaborate plans that I would have hatched. I had to use figures that were built by me ages ago and stripped of their paint. They aren't the best at all and I'll be replacing them one at a time over the next while.
As for the rest of the diorama I'm pretty pleased with it, I tried a few new things and learned a few new ones. So that makes it a success in my books, even when it looks a bit crappy haha.

There's a build log on youtube in by channel if you're interested. It's in the playlists as "The Battle of Kursk GB"

Here are the photos of the final reveal.

You wanted to do more!! :eeek: :eeek: Cheese and rice Mike, 2 tanks, a dozen plus figures, scratch built diorama base, telegraph poles, grass, scrub, brambles, a barrel, a bucket, bottles, flowers............on second thoughts, it could do with a couple of sunflowers!! Only kidding!!

I'm going to go and make a nice big mug of coffee and sit and go through these pics again nice and slow and savour every last detail. The tanks on their own are a masterpiece, beautifully painted and weathered - love the dirt and rust on the tracks and front plate etc. The attention to detail on the base is mind blowing and it all looks very natural, as though everything is exactly where it would be in a real-life situation. But for me it is the figures that really bring this to life as they bring real movement to the piece - the guys running up the bank and the guy jumping down to the ground. It looks like a frozen moment in time, almost as though someone had hit the pause button.

And to quote the wise eminent words of that venerated sage, Tina Turner.........."You're simply the best!!!" :cheers2:
"Courage is feeling fear and acting anyway."

 I couldnt say it better then the other guys ....this is one great dio....it takes alot of skill to make a dio this large and keep it from looking crowded and busy.....i really think you captured the way the soviets attacked the germans with mass infantry rushes and the tanks as support....every detail is just rite..great job
On the bench........uummmmm i dont have a bench......not yet anyway

Ike jokingly to Patton......"funny thing George every time I get a new star I get attacked"

Patton...."yes and every time you get attacked i bail you out"

Awesome dio, Coen!
Great realism, great detail!
And like I told you before: Perfect paintjob on that KV-1!!
Another masterpiece!

How did you do the KV-1 tracks? And are they plastic or real metal tracks?
They look so frickin' real!

cheers

Thanks Fellas.
I just noticed (thanks to Jonas Warwarneverchanges) that I forgot to screw down the T-70M. It's floating in the air a bit. I'll have to fix that ir it will drive me nuts. Haha.

Hi Coen

This Diorama is so great , we can 'travel' back in time to Kursk battle and see all the Russian Infantry rushing besides the Tanks !

And the detail and the layout is so well done :th:

Real Good .

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

They're Fruilmodel... So that helps a lot with their appearance, I alcladed them with black alclad primer then dry-brushed them Mig's track paint colour. After that I thinned a series of Mig's rust paints and drybrushed them one after another until in had a nice varied look to them.
After that I took a metal coloured Karismapencil to all the high points and the hinges.
Then it was dirt coloured pigments fixed with Tamiya x20a.
I took the metal pencil to some of the high points again afterwards to bring back a bit of the shine covered by the pigments.
Them I called them done. :)

Wow. Thanks for sharing, Coen. That looks like a lot of work.
But the results are definitely worth the effort, I would say.
