Mig Paint Woes
Hi,
I have primed my model with Vallejo surface primer (grey). I have then put on a coat of MIG dark red primer. The paint is drying glossy and "slipping" off the model ie not adhering to the surface properly.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems and is there a fix?

Re: Mig Paint Woes
why not try another MAT paint... any brand but Vallejo, Tamiya comes to mind!
then apply MIG paint over.... after a day or so... and see if it adheres better ?
Not all Acrylic paints are made equal....
someone here has described the Chemistry of the Vallejo and Ammo and AKi paints once and it made sense why we
were having so many issues....
Sorry I can't recall the tread ! but that guy knew his stuff...
I am sure Paul will sort you out.... he did extensive tests as well !
sorry for your problems... I am sure in then end.. it will help many others...
later mate.

Tell the truth I'm thinking of abandoning Spanish acrylics altogether and going back to Tamiya!

if you had good results before switching to Vallejo?
and are unhappy with your models ever since you switched !
I stopped using Vallejo in my A/B all together after the
Primer fiasco !

I am not holding a grudge so far !
Model Master Acryl II or Tamiya Acrylics are my

Re: Mig Paint Woes
Yeah there are some issues with the mig paints, i had problems and was even in direct contact with mig himself to resolve the problems. i think theres been a problem along the way that effected some of the paints. If you use them with Mr Hobby thinner then they work great. No ideal but at least they work.
As for spanish acrylics, ak's new formula paints work great, vallejo model colour brush paint beautifully. Vallejo model air suck big time imo, to many problems, same with there varnishes and primer too.
Mr hobby aqueous are probably the best all round paints and airbrush flawlessly, there my go to paints.

Yup that's what I've found. Vallejo brush brilliantly but are a nightmare in an airbrush. Can't get easy access to Mr Hobby though!

I'm in Ireland.
Re: Mig Paint Woes
I got rid of all my Vallejo Model Air and primers and I kept the Model Color only because they brush-paint fairly well. As for primers, the new Badger Stynylrez primers are a real treat so far. I may even stop using AMMO primers all together.

Re: Mig Paint Woes
I might mail order some Gunze thinner as Paul suggested just to use up the stock of Vallejo, AK and MIG I have. I put a coat or two of Tamiya over the top of my unplanned MIG gloss coat and it turned out ok.
I put the same Tamiya paint onto the rear doors of the sdkfz 251 I am building. It only had Vallejo primer on it and the finish wasn't great (although not as bad as the MIG turned out).

Re: Mig Paint Woes
Since I lowered my pressure and used Mig Paints over a primer...
I had no issues what so ever !
I no longer use Thinners that are not of the same brands.... to avoid
problems...
I wish you luck and Happy modeling ...

Re: Mig Paint Woes
Folks I just wanted to post a follow up on this one.
Due to paint clogging issues with Model Air I had sprayed the Vallejo primer onto my model using my old Aztec A470 airbrush. From memory, I also used the A470 to spray the MIG red undercoat colour mixed with MIG's own thinner.
As I have just spent a LOT on Vallejo, AK and MIG paints recently I decided to have another go today.
I sprayed unthinned Vallejo black primer straight from the bottle onto the lower hull, wheels and tracks of the Sdkfz 251 I am building using my Iwata HPC airbrush. The finish is simply stunning. It is the smoothest, densest black I have ever seen on a model. (Previously I would have primed with Humbrol flat black or Tamiya flat black.)
As a result I have ordered some Mr Hobby thinner from E models as suggested by Paul and others here and hopefully MIG paints will work for me.
