Chiefs Trumpeter SA-6 Gainful

Post by chief5437 »

Got the go ahead for this, so here's my entry for the SIG.

Image

Supposed to be a nice kit, although the missiles are a bit on the thin side (apparently!).

Wanted to build one of these for a long time, so I'm really looking forward to it!

Awesome I've got the same kit! In a poll I made it's tied with 2 other kits to build for this sig. If there's no tie breaker I'll be sure to build something else from you. Looking forward to seeing you build it :th:

Think should build out nicely. I saw a completed build a year or so ago and scale problems were not an issue with the finished result.

Made a start on this in the early hours of New Year's Day. Been quite a quick build, no fit issues at all, so I'd best get some pics up!

Box full of plastic

Image

Usual trumpeter instructions, pretty good.

Image

Decals for five options

Image

But paint guide for just three options! (One on reverse)

Image

Started with the missiles, slight bit of filler needed on the seams.

Image

Next up was the 'launch pad'. The instructions tell you to glue all the parts in place, choosing either the stowed or erected (snigger) position. But I read somewhere that you could make it adjustable. I found that the brackets all 'snap fit' allowing movement. The only alteration needed was on the 'tear drop' shaped part shown below, left of the hole.

Image

Rather than gluing it in, I used a heated screwdriver to 'rivet' over the end, allowing it to move freely. I did consider using spare poly caps, but you can't get access to this area once assembled. So if they came off you'd be stumped. Pic below shows the 'riveted' part from inside.

Image

Three pics to show the movement in action! Lol!

Image
Image
Image

Launch pad complete, each arm is slightly different to the next, don't mix them up! I labelled each one after I'd assembled it.

Image

Lower hull completed. Fit the bump stops before the swing arms, it's a bit fiddly otherwise, believe me!

Image

Upper hull completed. I've left some parts unglued for now, to allow access to details.

Image

Wheels, not much to say really, lol! I've scuffed them up and taken some chunks out, using a rough sanding stick, to give a beaten up look.

Image

A few mock up shots

Image
Image
Image

The kit provides plastic hose for some areas, but it's quite stiff. Fine for a straight build, but as I want the movement in the launcher, I need something more flexible. I'll see what I can come up with!

In the next riveting instalment..... Link and length tracks, see you there!

Thanks for looking fellas :cheers2:

Lol! I'm sure I said I'd take more time over builds this year!: but this kit just fell together. I'm sure if I'd have turned my back it would've built itself, lol!

Man I have this kit and seeing you building it makes me wish I'd have chosen it instead of the M1. Nice build

Nice choice Chief
I know that Norm (Schweinhund227) did a few vids on youtube about this kit
If you are looking for some tips those are a good source as he explains a method of converting the connections between the vehicle and missles
Good luck with the build

Cheers Mark, I'll check those vids out, the missile/vehicle connection seems ok, they fit into slots on the launch racks. I've got some paint on now, so might be a bit late for alterations, no harm in looking though! Thanks for the info :th: :th:

Quick update on tonight's progress.

Got the tracks assembled, left them in two parts to ease attachment later.

Image

Got the base coats down. Faded some panels with a lighter shade of the base colour.

Image

Then, after a klear coat, started the first stage of weathering by adding a dark brown wash.

Image

Took quite a while to get that done, so that's where I am for now. More later!

Thanks for looking in, and for your comments :th: :th: :cheers2:

Another update using pics that don't look any different to the last ones, lol!!

Added some built up dirt in some areas, using enamels, then blending with white spirit. Also put a few rust spots on with oils.

Got the tracks on, what a pita!! Had to fiddle around for ages, they were either half a link too long, or half a link too short! :pistols: :wall:

Then my enamel wash started eating through the glue and they started coming apart! :wall: :wall:

Got there in the end though!

Anyway, here's a couple of pics, not that you can see any difference.:

Looks superp Chief I really love your work, trumpeter is a manufacturer I have a love hate relationship with, almost perfect kits but tend to have annoying bits as well, either way I heard you sniggering earlier and I look forward to the next update

Thanks very much Tom, much appreciated! :th:

However, seems I've been a naughty boy, as I haven't got this finished!

Between playing taxi for the Mrs and her kids, and playing with the new look forum, I've only got a couple of small bits done. Hope to get more done tomorrow! :cheers2:

I use Vallejo plastic putty. Comes in a tube with a long thin nozzle, so it's great for getting filler just where you need it!

Update time!

This is all built and weathered now. Just need to find something suitable for a base.

Here's all the sub assemblies. Unfortunately, there aren't any decals provided for the missiles : which is wierd as there's quite a few on the real thing!?

Image

I'll save putting them together until the base is sorted.

Here's a link to some history, I won't copy it to here as there is a LOT!!

And here's some cool pictures! :thumb1:

That's all for now, hope to have a base sorted soon, just need to find some decent materials lying around somewhere, lol!
