Trumpeter 1:35th Grizzly AVGP

Post by Radzy »

Hello guys,

from all bold plans I had for 2014 there's not much left to do :P. Not that I fulfilled them... simply forgot why I do build models (not how, however ;-) ).

So now I decided there's last moment to go with something for ISM forum's SiGs or GB...

The only thing on shelf I had that could classify was this Trumpy's Grizzly AVGP.

A little bit about vehicle itself..

Historical brief
Image
Courtresy: Wikipedia.org

AVGP, or Armoured Vehicle General Purpose, is series of 3 armoured fighting vehicles on common platform ordered by Canadian Army in 1977.
Among those vehicles are:
  • Cougar - recce & fire support vehicle
  • Grizzly - armoured personell carrier
  • Husky - armoured recovery vehicle
Vehicle specs (Grizzly only):
  • Weight : 10.7t
  • Length : 5.97m
  • Width : 2.50m
  • Crew : 3 crew + 6 in transport compartment
  • Armament : 12.7mm heavy mahine gun + 7.62mm machine gun 2x4 66mm smoke grenade launchers
  • Engine : Detroit Diesel 6V53T twocycle turbo-charged diesel, 275hp
  • Suspension : 6x6
  • VMax : 100km/h
Vehicle was used by Canadians for training and in various peacekeeper missions for UN (e.g. UNPROFOR in Somalia).

Kit

The kit is very well moulded Trumpy kit in grey plastic.
Well detailed and you can find no flash or ejector pins in unwanted places. Seems like nice and easy, but as it is standard (for me) with Trumpeter lots of fiddly small parts that I will probably loose somewhere along the way :P

Two versions of camo are available: UN mission white vehicle and (my choice) IFOR 2 colour camouflage.

Here are some what's-in-the-box pics:

So that's all for introduction :)

Cheers,
Radek

Update #1

Not much done so far. I have managed to finish undercarriage.
The mounting of underwater propulsion was very fiddly and difficult. It took me several attempts to put them all in place.

So here are some pics how far with the build I am:

Hello,
while waiting for winter to come, Update #2 came first :)

I managed to assemble the kit. Although it looks thoroughly good and I had no fitting issues, but unfortunately it turned out that photoetched parts are missing and the assembly of turret was ... omitted in instruction sheet.
So you need to improvise. It's not that hard and generally the vehicle looks quite nice.

Now off to painting

I have primed the vehicle with Citadel Chaos Black primer (spray) and followed with Gunze Aqueous H303 (Green) as base coat. Camo pattern was achieved with application of GSI H401 Dark Grey.
Model was left to dry for total 5 days (2 days after primer and 3 after paints. I have applied the Gunze Top Coat Gloss afterwards to prepare the surface before applying details. 2 days drying now :)

So here are the pics of the models after painting:

So that's all for now :) Decals should be finished tomorrow, so it might be I will weather the kit before end of the week, but who knows... ;-)

Cheers,
Radek

Hello guys,

sorry pictures from last update were eaten by digital rats :(

So no pics of me using filters, lighter liquid, pigments as well as a failure of using Vallejo matt varnish in spray over pigments (I ended up with snow, not mud :P , but managed to reverse the effects ).

If you wish to see the finished model, it can be viewed HERE

Cheers,
Radek
