Academy 1/48 Spitfire FR Mk XIVe

Post by Willem »

Finished in the colours of No. 28 Sqn., RAF Tengah Singapore in 1947.

Quick boost upper cowling, prop, cannons, white metal undercarriage and Squadron vac form canopy. Spare three spoke wheels from an old Airfix Seafire. Decals were Xtradecals set 48-130 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV/Mk.XVIII Part 2. Paints were Tamiya acrylics throughout. Weathered with washes, pigments and a silver pencil.

The kit itself fits together very well and the engraved detail is crisp and sharp. There are accuracy issues hence the resin in the nose. The kit decals silvered very badly despite care taken to achieve a smooth surface and two coats of Aqua Gloss and I wish I had used spares for the stencils.

Cutting the plastic and adding resin was a first for me but I'm pleased how it turned out. Vac form canopy was another first and, although fiddly and time-consuming, I'd definitely use one again as the result is a step up in quality for me.

Things I'd do differently next time:- I would tightly mask the camo pattern and throw the kit decals in the bin as soon as I opened the box.

So far the Academy kits are the only examples available if you want to make a Mk XIV in 1/48 and with a bit of work could be upgraded to a Mk XVIII.

On with the pics.

Enjoyed taking part as it gave me the excuse to build another spit and to do a project that I had been putting on the back burner.

Thanks for taking a look.

Very nice job buddy.

indeed, academy decals are often of poor quality. I bought the T-50 at 1/48th scale with the golden eagle scheme, i'm scared for the decals..we'll see.

another brand you have to avoid for the decals is Roden, the kits are nice but the decals are very poor
Bruno

Finished models:
Hawker Hurricane Hasegawa 1/72, P-47D Academy 1/72, Scimitar AFV 1/35, Me 109-E3-1/48 Airfix

on the bench:
F-15DJ Hasegawa-1/48 japanese Agressor 2010 scheme (long term project)
F-16 solo turkish Revel-1/72

Cheers Bruno. This was my first Academy kit and apart from the decals I'm very impressed.

Mmmm yummy :D
Camo looks great as is it is Will and I love that canopy, I need to do a Spit soon (MkV is my favourite so might have to be the new Airfix effort).
Top job Willy....
Yes.. It is supposed to look like that!

Cheers Timothy, old bean. :D

Yes, am now a vac form canopy fan. This means my builds will take even longer.

Got the new Mk V waiting in the wings. Wondering how to get that Malta blue shade over the camo though.

Azure blue? Xtraylix do one Will, I used their PRU blue on my Mossie, nice paint. Lifecolor as well, but I've got a feeling it's only available as part of an Aussie camo set.
