1/35 Tamiya Char B1 Bis (in Recaptured Free French Forces Service)

Post by PanzerBeard »

Hi all, so i've decided to enter this for my first ever GB to try get myself some good mojo for modelling, and to attempt to completely finish a build, as such this'll be pretty much the second build i'll have ever finished so far, and it certainly seems good enough to be built out-of-box!

So, first of all, a little bit about the subject matter;

The Char B1 was a French heavy tank manufactured before World War II.

The Char B1 was a specialised heavy break-through vehicle, originally conceived as a self-propelled gun with a 75 mm howitzer in the hull; later a 47 mm gun in a turret was added, to allow it to function also as a Char de Bataille, a "battle tank" fighting enemy armour, equipping the armoured divisions of the Infantry Arm. Starting in the early twenties, its development and production were repeatedly delayed, resulting in a vehicle that was both technologically complex and expensive, and already obsolescent when real mass-production of a derived version, the Char B1 "bis", started in the late thirties. Although a second uparmoured version, the Char B1 "ter", was developed, only two prototypes were built.

Among the most powerfully armed and armoured tanks of its day, the type was very effective in direct confrontations with German armour in 1940 during the Battle of France, but slow speed and high fuel consumption made it ill-adapted to the war of movement then being fought. After the defeat of France captured Char B1 (bis) would be used by Germany, with some rebuilt as flamethrowers or mechanised artillery, and the remainder re-deployed as normal tanks, some of which served on the eastern front against soviet Russia from June 1941 in both command and fire-support roles.

After the Allies had invaded France in 1944, some B1s were recaptured. Several were used on an individual and incidental basis by resistance forces, such as those fighting the German garrison of Paris in August 1944. On 7 October 1944, the Provisional Government of the French Republic formed the 13th Dragoon Regiment of the Free French Forces. The majority of the regiment fielded SOMUA S35 cavalry tanks, but Captain Edmond Voillaume's 2nd Company was equipped with 19 B1 bis tanks, which included a mixture of standard and German modified B-2s. They were stationed in Orléans until 2 April 1945, when they were mobilized for the Allied siege of La Rochelle.

The tanks were effective in the attack on Royan on 15 April 1945, using their 75 mm guns for fire support, while targeting pillboxes with their 47 mm guns. After that, 2nd Company accompanied troops on an assault on Pontaillac on 17 April, followed by an attack on the German stronghold at La Rochelle between 29 April and 8 May. Voillaume was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions. After the war, the 13th Dragoon Regiment was stationed in the French occupation zone of Allied-occupied Germany as part of the French 3rd Armoured Division. It was eventually disbanded in the German town of Wittlich in April 1946.

My personal choice for this particular model will be to paint it up as per the instructions for Tank No. 22 "Vercors", 2nd Company, 13th Dragoon Regiment of the Free French Forces, La Rochelle, April 1945 using Tamiya TS-5 (XF-62) and will be weathered accordingly.

So! First build post today! Not a massive amount done, but i'm happy to of gotten the 30-something tiny wheels sanded and cleaned up and done today, getting them with their bracket on was quite tricky though, but it's on now so happy days :)

Image
Image
Image

So with the running wheels and two hull plates on from Step 2, moved on to Step 3 which was to make the drive sprockets and idler wheels, these had a small poly-cap inserted into them.

Image
Image

Overall, these are quite well detailed IMO and will definitely look the part when painted up :)
Next i moved on to Step 4, which involved assembling the famous 75mm howitzer that the Char B1 was practically built around, and hull plating for the idler wheels to be attached to, but i unfortunately ran out of modelling time today to finish that stage, but there's always tomorrow.

Image

I got the 75mm howitzer all button up and smoothed off as best i could, i don't personally see any visible seam lines now on it.

So here's a nice little picture of today's overall progress, happy chappy with how the kit's gone together so far, typical tamiya ease. :)

Update Number 2 - Insomnia Edition:

So, this one's a somewhat bigger update than my previous one, ended up not being able to sleep and long story short, i finished what i was doing on this kit this morning at 8:30am before finally collapsing into bed, so let's start the picture-flood shall we?

Began the building by finishing off Step 5 and adding the 75mm Howitzer and it's holding mechanism, alongside the parts to hold the Idler wheels, and the mudguards for the wheels.

Image
Image
Image

Next step involved drilling 26 1mm holes in the upper part of the chassis in order to mount other parts on, and building up a couple of small details on the interior that do show on the exterior, including what looks like rear scrapers or mudguards near the drive sprockets which have been marked L and R for the correct sides, however these letters will be visible from some angles, so i sanded them off with the aid of a Ultimate Thinny Stick.

Image
Image
Image

Onwards and upwards from here, carried on with building up some of the exterior detail of the upper hull, including engine grilles, hatches, entrance door, track skids, all sorts! All of it went together very, very well indeed.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Couple of glamour shots of the details on this kit at the moment, it's honestly a real pleasure to look at and build so far!

Image
Image

Now the instruction manual asks for me to build the tracks, i managed to accomplish a full side before falling asleep at 61 links, they go together incredibly easily, hold together well, and the ONLY thing that needs doing to them is a quick sand with a thinny stick or polishing stick to remove the burr off the top of each track. Absolutely fab.

Image
Image

They haven't been fully assembled on the last link so i can prime and paint them separately, they should be very easy to thread inbetween the mudguards and chassis later on so i'm not too worried :)

Hope you've enjoyed the update and pictures!

Right folks! Time for a long-overdue update!

I've been slowly whittling away at this kit and getting things as right as i can, including running a good few tests with this Mr. Surfacer 500 i recently purchased in an attempt to make a better go of the casting texture on the turret than the kit does out of the box, and just for reference, i'll also include a link to the video i used on YouTube of a Char B1 bis at the Saumur Tank Museum.

So, let's begin shall we?

The actual kit-building side is complete now, including burnishing the two (?) chains included in the kit for the rear of the tank, and the included Free Frenchman Commander figure although he required a bit of filler here and there.

Image
Image
Image

So, with the building side finally complete, i decided after some practice with the Mr. Surfacer to give it a try, bear in mind i've only done the turret and commander's cupola because as far as i can tell from pictures and the reference YouTube Video, it was the only area that the casting texture was lacking from.

Here's the untouched surface.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

And here's the surface after a bit of work with a Ultimate Thinny Stick and Finishing Polisher, to get it as near to the "smooth from a distance" texture as possible.

Image
Image
Image
Image

The pictures don't show it up all THAT well, but it wasn't meant to be a massively rough texture, by comparison to the stuff the Russians were casting at the time the french casting was extremely smooth.

So here we go! The final assembly together, turret now has it's cast texture, and it's ready for a whip around with some Primer and Base Coat soon! Enjoy the last few pictures! :)

And finally, the reference video i used, credits to Panzer Picture for his wonderful footage.

Re: 1/35 Tamiya Char B1 Bis (in Recaptured Free French Forces Service)

Post by PanzerBeard »

Well, here it comes i guess, the flood of pictures and info from me that's been building up for a while now, let's get to it.

So, after my last post we left off with the Char having had it's cast texture renewed, the build completed, and the whole thing ready for it's primer and base colour to be applied, so naturally (as i'm not yet up and running with an airbrush, compressor's wrapped up for christmas lol) i went with some Games Workshop Chaos Black Primer, a decent and reliable rattle-can solution, if a little bit expensive.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Aaaaand the little commander!

Image
Image
Image

So, next step was to get the Char dressed up in it's Tamiya TS-5 (Olive Drab) base colour, and begin the painting, i thought i'd start with chipping, had an interesting idea in my head that if i perhaps did the main chipping with a German Grey colour, then it'd hold some lineage for the vehicle having been captured by the germans, then RE-captured by the french at the end of the war.

What follows next, was a mistake that cost me quite a lot of my mojo and confidence.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

The culprit? I picked up a bottle of Tamiya XF-23 Dark Grey, thinking that was the right equivalent to German Grey, wasn't, at all. Hated how it turned out, absolutely thought i'd ruined the paint at this stage already, so i gave up, and painted the commander instead..

Painted him with some basic Tamiya XF paints, and Vallejo's "Face Painting Set" which contained a handy little step-by-step guide how to use the set too, really rather chuffed with my first go at painting human skin / faces.

Image
Image
Image

Lovely jubbly i thought, feel a bit of my mojo coming back at last, so i whipped out the last remnants of my only can of Tamiya TS-5, took the Char outdoors, and resprayed her gently, just hoping the whole time i hadn't gone too far into the realms of stupidity.

Image
Image
Image

Success!... mostly.. ran out of TS-5 just at the end near the exhausts, grey is showing through slightly, but that'll be masked with weathering at a later stage.

Onwards and upwards then, time to re-try the chipping, but this time in actual German Grey, in the form of Tamiya XF-63, although it IS quite hard to see at times, i know it's there, and i'm quite happy with the overall effect so far, although i will try to accentuate it with oils later on.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Faaaaantastic, happy with the result, mojo is definitely coming back, despite the episodes of insomnia and general malaise that seem to try and drag me down at the moment.

Now, time's ticking on, i NEED to get this thing ready for gloss ASAP, so i can get the Decals on, gloss over the top, and start getting the Oil weathering tried out! Tools, further chipping and base rusting? Onwards!

As a little note, you'll notice that on the side of the Char with the engine-venting there's rather alot of overspray (wind took the spray suddenly during my first base-coating of the kit) so i've decided to attempt to creatively use that as an advantage so to speak, or at least cover up my ineptitude by depicting it as bubbled paint / rust, we'll see how it turns out properly when i get to the Pigmenting stage.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image

The painting was all done with Ammo of MIG's Tools Colors set, AK Interactive's Tracks and Wheels set, and some Vallejo colours as well, and overall, i'm quite happy so far, the wood on the tools i'm still of 2 minds about, but that can be changed in the future if it's too bright, i'm quite happy with the effect of MIG's Gun Metal mixed with a little bit of Vallejo Black for the tool metal though, it's quite realistic looking to my eyes.

Anyway folks, i'm glad you've stuck around until now, if you've made it THIS far into the post then you're a real trooper :) As ever, any critique, any comments, suggestions, feedback or "Oh! i know a thing that'd do what you want to do even better!" brainstorms are always welcome, and i'll catch you all in the next update. :D

Out of context this would sound ridiculous, but I love your shovel and ax head. What did you use for those, or did I miss it?

Some great work, always nice to overcome a mistake (though for what it's worth I wouldn't have noticed the blue/gray much had you not told the story ;) ).

Thanks lysus :) The process for all the tools was as follows; MIG Gun Metal -> MIG Gun Metal mixed 50-50 with Vallejo Model Color Black -> Highlight edges with MIG Gun Metal -> AK Interactive (AK 722) Dark Tracks watered down heavily then washed over the tools apart from the highlighted edges -> MIG Shadow Rust watered down and just dabbed on certain areas to pool, like the shovel and middle of the axe.

I hope that helps :)

Good to see and hear you've recovered from the mojo slump, know that feeling and the char is looking good. Do i spy a mecha voorhees in the background? Jason x is a superb movie.
