Its looking awesome, it always amazes me just how much of a difference the PE makes, im loving those louvres, where did you get them again ... ?
The paint looks great already, im really feeling the sand colour schemes on these badboys, looked at both your suggestions for my idea, just need to find some 1:144 divers now ... not the easiest thing to obtain apparently lol
Keep at it man this is going great !!!

I'm painting right now in fact, really digging the sandy colors myself. The PE I got from USA Gundam Store http://www.usagundamstore.com/collections/photo-etched.
There's a UK equivalent, Japan Cool: http://japan-cool.co.uk/epages/95000380 ... ccessories but it looks like they carry metal parts like USA Gundam, but not the PE. I'm sure USA can mail them to the UK, they're not big and fit in an envelope with some stiff cardboard.
As for divers, you might try looking up N Gauge figures for model railroading, they're usually 1/148-1/160. Alternatively you could grab some Gundam 1/144 figures: http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/ban976500.html. You can find them on most retail sites that carry Gundam stuff. They're men in space suits, but maybe they could be painted/altered to resemble divers?
Update hopefully tonight

Looking forward to it man, thanks for the info, ive looked at the Gundam figures, found them on Ebay but will shop around, toying with the idea of encasing the whole thing in resin for that real underwater feel but that would be a massive leap of faith for me ... needs more work on the drawing board yet ...

Should look at some GBWC entries, there's usually someone who gives it a try: http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=95523Primus1 wrote:Looking forward to it man, thanks for the info, ive looked at the Gundam figures, found them on Ebay but will shop around, toying with the idea of encasing the whole thing in resin for that real underwater feel but that would be a massive leap of faith for me ... needs more work on the drawing board yet ...

Totally unrelated, one of my favorite GBWC entries for an MG Dom:

Re: Bandai 1/144 MS-09F Dom Tropen x2
Moving right along, I applied my color coats.
Light brown with MR Color 19 Sandy Brown (all paints thinned 50/50 with Mr Color Leveling Thinner):

Dark brown with Mr Color 131 Propeller Color and 1 White at 90/10:

NOTE: The paint pots in the above shots were reversed! D'OH!
Weaponry done with 35/35/30 13 Neutral Gray, Navy Blue, and 92 Semi-Gloss Black as before with the standard Tropen:

And also as before, hands and joints are 30/30/40 1 White, 14 Navy Blue, and c72 Intermediate Blue. Though I think I added a touch too much Navy or not enough White this time as they seemed to turn out a bit darker than the first kit, no biggie:

The eye cowling was done with 68 Red Madder (aka Monza Red):

Finally there was the heat rod. Well, two, actually--it would seem I skipped it on the first Dom
No bother, got them both this time. The pictures show it as a solid white but I wanted it to have a more graphite or carbon look as it is some magic substance that can super-heat in seconds and slice through hard armor with ease. I used Mr Color 1 White, 13 Neutral Grey at 90/10 and thinned it about 70-80% with thinner to make it spotty and spitty if I went hard on the air and light on the paint through the brush. Worked out pretty well, I think:

I did run into one spot of trouble. I noticed when the painting was done that the "collar" on this Dom is meant to be the lighter brown, unlike the other Dom. This required a lot of troublesome masking, overspraying, cleaning, remasking, fixing dark brown, remasking...drinking. Got it done in the end:

That's all for now, sub-assembly done and on to weathering!

Final updoot!
I spent the last day or so trying some different weathering out, I landed upon going for the faded paint of a Japanese Zero. Why? Well, if you care, read on, otherwise scroll down a bit to the subject pix.

The desert Doms from the animation were stationed in an old abandoned diamond mine in Africa (Kinberaid I think the base was called). From the looks of it, they had 4 of the 8 total Tropen variants, all painted identically with no markings. Since this took place in UC 0083 (the calendar year for the story) and the war ended in 0080, they have sat in a cavern for three years. Perhaps they had some maintenance but mostly they'd stay hidden until the events of the film.
In other words, there would be little damage done to them, but nor would they be pristine. Faded, failing paint would make sense since shipments of new paint would never come.
The villain had made his way to this base with the Federation warship Albion hot on his heals, Kinberaid had the last remaining Zeon heavy lift vehicle (HLV, a giant rocket) capable of taking his stolen Gundam into space and the waiting arms of his Zeon remnant navy.

When time came, the 12 Zeon mobile suits (4 Dom Tropen, 8 Zaku II) sortied to delay the Albion until the lift off of the HLV--it was a one-way mission.

First I sorta' drybrushed the edges of the legs and feet with a Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver and XF-16 Flat Aluminum, hoping the contrast might add some "drama." I can barely see the difference. The darker brown areas were given a similar treatment with XF-56 Metallic Grey. After this, I went back and used some old grey foam sponge to dab more of the above paint on to try and give it that faded/chipped look. Some of it worked and looks good to me, some of it not so much, but it's all for fun and learning etc.:

Finally this was all followed with some Tamiya Weathering Master pastels around the feet using sand, oil, soot, and some rust.
I decided at the last minute to add some magnesium and copper pastel to the thruster bells, just 'cuz:

Looks ok, I think I might do it a bit differently next time. Also just noticed a splotch of panel liner I missed but the camera of course did not
Well, that's all sealed in behind some matte coating. Awesome.

Anyway, yeah so matte coat of Alclad Klear Matte sprayed on followed by final assembly once it was dry. Hopefully I can take some reveal shots tonight and get this one in the bag!

I'll need to finish my Floaty Thing next, and I really want to work on my Tamiya GB while I'm on VACATION, but it's tempting to start a second entry with one of my Macross jets: http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtop ... 56#p228456
