1/35 M10 Mid Production TD

A bit late to the party I know but here's my offering (maybe 'first' offering) for the I heart Tamiya SIG.

First up, I love Tamiya. I don't like kits that fight me or are detailed up the wazzoo for the sake of it. Tamiya suits me just fine

I like their armour and I LOVE their 1/48 and 1/32 aircraft.

I've fancied the idea of doing an Allied TD for a while. There's so much German stuff out there (which is great) but I wanted something in olive drab underpants as it were. I spotted an Academy M10 in a shop a week ago but having just finished an Academy Tiger 1, I fancied a bit of luxury and decided to see if their was anything from Tamiya.

Bingo, found this baby, checked the reviews on the Interweb and thought luvly jubly, I'm having that Mate! Its a 2016 brand new tool so its everything Tamiya are doing currently. Very nice box to start with and some nice detail ideas to be picked out weathering wise with pigments and filters.

All separately bagged which is nice

Beautifully detailed and no flash or abrasions

Slide moulded single piece barrel - sweeeeeet!

Nice casting on the front piece

Nice interior detail for the open turret, figures look good and the one piece upper hull is superbly crisp

The detail on the tracks is very good, looking forward to working on them when the time comes

Magazine type instructions which are great for those of us who don't have degrees in origami

(Academy take note - Lol)

And we're underway.

It goes without saying but this thing goes together with slide rule precision. A quick test fit then bang, out comes the TET and its off to the races

Rear end done, all nice and neat

Plenty more to come, I'm already ahead of this posting, I just wanted to get the stuff onto the forum before I get too far into the build. May post more tonight, but more likely to be tomorrow.

Hi Pete. By all means have a look in.

Its a lovely kit I must say and it goes together like the proverbial Swiss watch.

Finished the running gear. The detail on the plastic is something else and it falls together (provided one reads the instructions properly!).

Next up was the hull. First were all the little bolts then the spare tracks. No dramas

I'm hoping there will be enough room to see something of the interior. Its nicely detailed and there's plenty of greeblies for the interior of the turret walls too.

Lamps and hatches and bits and bobs

Rear end and tools

Hull and running gear all done. The upper hull sits on the lower perfectly without any need for glue and there are no visible seem lines. Working with 2 separate halves is going to be a real bonus when I paint the interior. I plan to get it all done before I even think about putting the 2 halves together.

Rather nice gun breach which bodes well for the turret.

I'm now on to the interior details attached to the turret walls then it will be time to paint the interior. Cant go too fast as I'm waiting for some metal coat paints for the shells which sit inside the turret.

I'm having a proper ball!

Ah, here you are ! Looking at your box art maybe i didnt buy the M 10, cant remember now, we'll see what turns up

I'll follow along with your build although it seems you can assemble quite a bit of it before painting ?

That's the beauty with AFVs. The M10 is a little more complicated because of the exposed interior through the turret but normally you can pretty much complete construction (save sometimes for the wheels and tracks) before you think about painting. Its just a full on building kind of feel then you get your painting head on and go for it. There's also loads of stuff on the forum for painting and weathering AFVs. I only ever used to build aircraft but now I walk both sides of the street since coming back to the hobby 18 months ago.

Its also worth building armour to get on side with the metal heads! They're serious about their stuff and they look down on the plane makers!

Thanks Tommy, hope to paint the interior of the hull and turret halves over the weekend then its putting the turret together and starting the external paint job. That's the plan anyway. I'll probably end up just watching the sport on TV!

I cant believe I haven't touched the kit for nearly 2 weeks!

Finally got back into it today with the interior painting. I used Tamiya interior green with a fine mist of yellow on top for the base coats.

I'm undecided about the turret crew. The kit comes with the commander, gunner and loader and they look pretty good on the sprues. Problem is, once they're in the turret, the interior is barely visible. So its six of one and half dozen of the other right now.

The detail painting was pretty quick, painted the Thompson and the fire extinguisher along with the 3 seat pads (still on the sprues) then I got to work on the chipping. I used Vallejo Metal Colour steel and a very small brush.

I also painted the internal ammo racks with the shells in their tubes. The inserts go on the internal deck of the hull and just click into place. They fill the space up well and look pretty cool (I am such a child!)

With everything in, save for the stowed seats and the shells on the rear racks, it looks pretty nice me thinks. Still don't know about that turret crew!

Had a blast for about 3 hours. Cant believe I left it for 2 weeks. More tomorrow!

Bit more done today.

Painted the ammunition and test fitted some in the rear of the turret. They still need a decal each but once they're done I'll be able to put them in properly and finally put the turret halves together.

Added the counterweights on the back of the turret to compensate for the weight of the 76.

Test fitted the mantle and barrel. Its a nice single piece barrel so a minimum of sanding and voila!

Thanks Johnj. I'm currently using Vallejo metal colour for my chipping. Despite being very thin it covers nicely and stays wet on the brush far longer than other acrylics. I use a very small brush (about 7 or 8 mm) which I wipe off a little on tissue paper than I try and paint the chips, aiming at edges and corners where I can. The colour in the interior is 'steel', for the exterior I may use 'gun metal' or I may have to use a black, in which case I'll switch to Vallejo's model air black.

Where I've chipped the floor, that was more of a dry-brushing job for a more general coverage effect. I also switched to black for some of it as I didn't want the floor to shine too much. I still need to use some pigments on the floor but that will be a first for me, hence I've chickened out so far!

Got the priming done this morning.

Worked out how to do the masking

After looking at various posts and vids I think I have previously primed my kits too 'dry', meaning the model was not taking the paint in a wet enough mix, leading to poor adhesion and problems later on, particularly when masking. Its a technique thing on my part, not the product, so this time I made sure the paint went on nice and wet. Happy with the results!

(A bit of product placement for the boys too)

I work in front of a massive window in my kitchen which is great for the light but can be a bit of a problem when taking WIP pics due to the contrast issues. Here's a couple more with the light adjusted by my iphone's camera settings.

I think I missed a little bit on the right side front track guard but its not the end of the world.

And finally one more - and a little bit more Ultimate product placement!

That's the lot for today. We're 3 down in the Ryder Cup but I'm backing team Europe all the way.

Thanks mate. I was well pleased with how it turned out - and that so much can be seen through the top of the turret. Its always a worry when you make the effort on the interior - how much will be visible when its done?

Its why I hesitate to buy AFVs like the new Takom Tiger II. I would love to work on the interior stuff but once the tank is done, so much will not be visible. It also stops me spending money on the Trumpeter 1/16 kits, although that's probably a good thing, given the prices!

Had a go at the chipping but it's gonna take a bit more practice. I will get on top of it though

I decided just to go for the 1/48 M10 just to dip my toe in for now. I noticed the box had a bit of weight to it so i had a fair idea it came with a metal chassis.

A 1/48 M10 looks like a nice way to start. Should be a nice test, a quality kit but not too much of a handful. I reckon you'll take to it like a duck to water (continuing the H2O metaphor)

Got in some good progress today. After my recent discovery that olive drab is not green (posted in Modelling Chat some time back) and is in fact black mixed with yellow, I added a little Tamiya XF60 to my olive drab to lighten the paint for spraying.

Here's the results. The colour seemed to sit nicely on the dark primer, some nice depth effects.

The spraying was uneventful, Tamiya mixed with Ultimate thinner seems to agree with my airbrush!

The detail painting was relatively straight forward, Vallejo metal colour steel for the tracks and tool shafts, and dark earth for the wood. I'll rust up the tracks for a more 'iron' look during the weathering process.

Then it was on with the Alclad Aqua Gloss ahead of the decals and weathering. I'll do the chipping once the decals are done before I seal them with a second glossing.

Masking off, only a second glossing is left for the airbrush, after that its brush work for filters, washes and pigments then maybe a final dusting and matt coat which I will not need to mask.

Got the decals done today - marathon session it was!

I let them dry then went to work on the chipping. I used gun metal and its come out a little bright. It will tone down once the washes and filters go on but I may have to apply some darker colour selectively if it is still too bright.

I rusted up the spare tracks too

Overall, subject to the chipping calming down a bit, I'm happy. Next up is glossing to protect the decals and chipping then its a Ultimate wash, another gloss then dot filtering and pigments - the whole nine yards

And I need to mask the tracks for spraying and drybrushing. All good fun

As for the decals - that's why I don't make jets - its death by decal. I look in on the Phantom SIG now and then and I sigh when I see what those guys will be putting themselves through on those F4s.

Minor update. Had some fun dot filtering this evening. I decided to do it before I do a Ultimate wash as I want the effect to sit under the wash. Time will tell if it was the right call or not.

I used four colours and my new low odour turpenoid.

Turret first

Then on to the hull

I'm pleased with the overall effect but it is heavy in places. I'll clean it up using more of the turpenoid tomorrow. I'll then gloss it in prep for the Ultimate wash. After that it will be spraying with filters then some pigments and a final varnish to finish.

I went for the green and yellow to bring out natural highs and lows in the base colour, white to generally lighten and burnt sienna to add depth. In the end though, I think the white overpowered the others but that's fine. I like the slightly bleached and washed out look it has created and I think it will look great once I do the dark wash on top. I'll use the burnt sienna again for rust streaks but they will be specific rather than the random dot filter method.

Got started on the tracks. Masked off the rubber part and sprayed Vallejo steel. I then dry brushed with red brown. Once they are on the tank I will do more work with pigments and washes to bring out the iron look. Its understated at the moment but an OK base for now.

I glossed the turret and hull to seal in the filters ahead of the Ultimate wash due next. The gloss has calmed the filters down nicely which I'm happy with - they were a bit in your face when I finished them yesterday!

Thanks mate. The flat nature of the armour panels make it an ideal subject for using filters and washes. Gonna try some pigments after the Ultimate wash, should be a laugh!

Yes indeed. They're dot filters as opposed to filters you airbrush which are very diluted colours designed to tint and subtly alter the hue of the base colour.

Johnj, you are far too kind but since well meant praise never hurt anyone, I'll take it.

I use the 'standing on the shoulders of giants' approach to my kits. I look to replicate the processes used by others when I see work that impresses me. (That's why I asked you about the paint job you did on that superb 109!).

I then buy half decent paints and thinners etc. to give myself the best chance of duplicating what I've seen. If it goes wrong I blame the person whose ideas I have lifted as they must have failed to explain them adequately

As for being an artist, if only! When I was younger I loved to draw but my subjects of interest were severely limited. Aircraft, spaceships and the occasional portrait. I never got into painting as I couldn't get anything to look anywhere near realistic. I still love art and I own a couple of very nice Robert Taylor prints. Return to Duxford and Bringing the Peacemaker Home. When I look at them I can almost hear the engines and smell the oil and gun smoke. I love the paintings for the settings as much as the aircraft. The skies and landscapes he paints are beautiful.

They certainly do some stunning pictures I have seen them at military shows several times,you happen to mention Duxford, that where I will be on Saturday in this.

Cheers mate. What's next? Well I've got a Nashorn and a Panzer IV Lang SP for the Panzer IV SIG so maybe one of those. I've also got loads of quality aircraft kits and I haven't build a flying thingy since early summer. Short answer is I don't have the foggiest!

Well, i'm just about to heap some more well earned praise on you as i have been using this build thread of your's as my 'go to' reference for detail painting/weathering on the big mossie. Your chipping is right on the money ! I find i'm asking myself 'how does he get it to look so convincing' when i'm looking through your pictures.

I'm also very humbled when guys of your ability are asking how i went about a certain part of something i have built ! Keep up the good work, your M10 is something is shaping up to be something very special

Thanks for the kind comments guys. I hope to get stuck into the kit big time over the weekend so hopefully a lot of progress to report.

As long as I ration my sport intake I should get some quality bench time.
