F1? By F1 do you mean that 2 hour rolling sponsorship advert where the race is decided by whoever gets out of the first corner first?

I like the qualifying and the start but flip me, its dull after that. Mind you I like watching the Belgian GP because Spa is in the Ardennes and I've been there on a battlefield tour.

A wise man indeed. I exaggerate about F1, sometimes its exciting and I love the camera angles where you get a real idea of the SPEED involved.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand!

Put the tracks on today. Figured they would be easy to paint and weather on the tank so on they went. I then used Mig medium rust on the metal sections to get a nice colour ahead of the pigments due later on.




Then it was on with the Ultimate dark dirt for an all over wash. No pics because I forgot! I then applied a heavy pin wash of the same stuff to bring out the panel lines, hatches, latches etc. I also did a little more streaking using oils as they wouldn't upset the wash beneath.





I did some fuel and oil spill stains on the rear deck around the caps for the various tanks. They need a little bit of gloss or satin to give them a greasy look but the colour basis seems ok to me. They were a mixture of oils and acrylics which I thought was cool as there was some nice separation where they wouldn't mix. Bit of an experiment really but hey, its all good fun! The back deck was also heavily pinwashed.







Nearly there now me thinks. A big session tomorrow before all the rugby on TV and I may call it done.

Almost over the line now. Had my first go at pigments today.

I started with the running gear. Most of the stuff ended up on the desk at first. I found it easier to add further pigments once the fixer was applied. Once it was on it was easy to add texture and I think the result looks ok.







Then it was on to the hull and turret. I switched from the paint brush to using a sponge applicator from a Tamiya weathering set (cool tip from a YouTube vid). I used more of the lighter pigment as I wanted the surfaces to look bleached and faded as well as dusty.

Very pleased with the rear end - ooh err missus!










Back to the work on the running gear. Here's how it looked once it had dried...






Very pleased for a first attempt. I will definitely use pigments from now on. Great effects and really fun to use so its a win-win.





All that's left now are a couple of antennas and a matt varnish to seal everything in.

Hey hey - FINISHED!

There were a few final bits and bobs to go on, including the 2 forward turret lifting lugs (which I had forgotten)

I also made the tow cable from the string the kit came with. The string was white - thanks Tamiya - so I painted it with a very watered down black acrylic then dabbed it with pigments once it was on the tank. I also super glued it to the hull in a couple of places to keep it 'sitting' right.

Once the last fiddles were down I hit it all over with some AK matt varnish and voila, all done. Just the reveal pics to do now and then its time to move on.

Thanks Pete. This is the first AFV where I've gone the whole way and used filters (first effort was under a winter wash so doesn't count) and the first time I have used pigments (both dry and wet), I thoroughly enjoyed the processes and was chuffed with the results.

Thanks for your info re the filler caps on the rear deck too. I managed to clean the chemical spills I had created around the two inner caps so I hope it is more realistic as a result. As for giving you lessons, while I appreciate the complement, I've SEEN your builds! The centre back at Accrington Stanley doesn't give tips to the captain of Brazil if you get my drift.

A truly exellent piece of work ! Every time i look through the pictures i see something else, i'm pretty sure the pictures dont do it justice plus it's been a great soarce of reference for the mosquito weathering.

Thanks Johnj. Its the first kit where I have followed the full weathering process of using filters, oils, washes and pigments. Got to say it was a blast!

I've got a Jagdpanzer IV going in the Panzer IV SIG but once that's done I'm pretty certain its a 1/32 bird up next. Leaning towards a Trumpy Me109F (Trop). I made a 109G from the same stable last year so I know its a nice kit, hopefully starting next week if I pull my finger out on the Panzer. Its primed and ready so I just need to get the base coat down and get going.

I also need to do the reveal shots for M10. Busy busy.
