I have been on a businesstrip this week so I haven't built much - just some small progress just before I left that I haven't posted until now.

Dryfitting; this will be nice I think. I'll have to do some masking before I glue in that part..

Time to build the AN/AAQ-33 Sniper XR

The Sniper XR is shown in retracted (standby) position where the frontsection is rotated 180 degrees so the optics are facing upwards.

It's made of 2 pcs of clear plastic parts, so I will try to paint it from the inside :scratch:

Hey Guys!

It's been a busy Saturday at the bench and an exciting one as well; the build have been progressing very good sofar so I guess it's time mess something up

Last weekend I did the assembly of the airbrakes without thinking it through properly.

So far so good...

But when I glued in the other one I didn't have time to adjust it properly before the CA-glue cured - so it got misaligned

Not much to do except use the saw.... I didn't want to pry it loose, because the resin part is very brittle and may break

The root cause to this mess was that I got impatient. Instead I should have added guiding pins and carefully aligned everything before I glued it in it's final position.

So let's do it properly!

I lost some material because of the sawblade and I had to sand the edges smooth, so I added a thin piece of plasticard

Canopy in place to protect the cockpit during painting. I have glued it with PVA and I will pry it loose after the paintjob is done. It will be canopy open model with the inside of the cockpit painted and detailed as well.

Short update before it's time to leave the bench for this weekend!

Small stuff prepared for primer. The radome of the AIM-120s and the ASQ-213 HARM Targeting Pod with XF-2 White - I'll leave that overnight and I will mask it tomorrow.

I was a little concerned about the *very* thin panellines and that the Ultimate Primer where going to flood them - but no worries; everything looks great and the panellines are preserved for sure

...and a couple of spoon got some UP treatment aswell.

I have decided to paint the aircraft in the 3-colour scheme, using the following paints:

Gunze H308, FS 36375 (Light Ghost Grey)
Gunze H306, FS 36270 (Medium Grey)
Gunze H305, FS 36118 (Gunship Grey)

I haven't used Gunze Aqueous paints before so I decided to make a test on some spoons first, to get an idea what they look like.

TBH; Tamiya have done all the hard work for me - I'm just gluing stuff togheter and smearing paint all over it....

I actually like to build in 1/72 scale; it's a convenient scale to build in, because the level of detail has a limit, so the builds will not go on forever (with the risk that I lose the m0jo on the kit)

Also, the rack up nicely in my display - because I don't have so much space for my finished kits :/

OK... I've been looking at pictures online and in books about F16CJ and after some consideration I decided to keep the weathering to a minimum. So I will just use a black wash for the panellines.

Did you use aftermarket decals??
I especially notice how many cool small print decals on the fuselage and even the weaponry that just up the realism
My Tamiya/Italeri F4 Phantom kit had none of that in its decals

Yeah, these birds look like they have just rolled out of the factory. They pictures I have seen shows no trace of dust or dirt buildup anywhere.
The decals are out-of-the-box. They are still Tamiya standard so I destroyed a couple decals for the weapons, but luckily I have another kit #60786 that is basically the same kit without equipment sprues, but the decal sheet is the same - so I had some spares

These 1/72 Warbird Series kits from new tooling are really awesome, I hope Tamiya replaces their old kits with "bought styrene" with toolings engineered by themselves. I will certainly buy every one of them (atleast one)

You should consider showing this model kit, it really is superb especially for its scale

I have that Tamiya kit# 60786
I though that it was a rebox of Italeri??? But nope scalemates says otherwise

I was bummed after fighting that Phantom F4 Italeri/Tamiya halfbreed, thinking of selling the lot of 1/72 Tamiya's I have.
But, if it builds up half as nice as you have done this one, will keep them
One more Phantom, then into Canadian CF-18's I think

Thank you Scott, I will bring it to the next exhibition here in Gothenburg I think - maybe the judges like it

You should keep the #60786 as Mojo-Restoration project if you ever need one... There is no need to throw aftermarket at like I did, it will build up wonderfully OOB. The story behind the aftermarket kits was that I was bored one day and went bonkers on Internet with my creditcard

I will probably build mine as an Aggressor at a later date.

Good luck with your Phantom builds and the CF-18s sound really cool

Yes, I just put a drop on my cutting-mat and use that with a cotton bud. The tip shouldn't be soaked with WD40, just a little soaked so it doesnt leave too much on the clear part.

Careful you don't get the WD oil onto another kit's plastic or you will see some wicked bad fish eyes when you try to paint it!!!

I always clean the workbench thoroughly after using stuff like that and throw the tissue and qtip away directly - and I wash my hands

One guy gave me heck online for having WD around my model desk once.
I was cleaning up a Pocher Alfa Romeo 1/8 basket case of a kit that I got off E bay and had to wash all the parts so I put the metal bits in WD to help and stop rust. He had a bad time with the oil and his paint and gave me the gears for it. Never heard of using it on a canopy, but it obviously works well!!!

As long as you don't lube your airbrush with it or spray it around your bench as a air freshener, I guess you are fine

But I can understand the guy - one ruined paintjob is all that it takes to hate WD40 until the end of time...

Never heard of using it on a canopy, but it obviously works well!!!

It does, but it should be used in a very controlled manner. I picked up the trick from a buildthread by a IPMS buddy.
