Internal walls close to finish and hopefully button up the fuselage this weekend. Just some stowage and stretchers to make up

well, I'm not hating anything you're doing :) Though I am in super duper busy mode lately so combing images has been a bit on the back burner.

The glass on these whirlybirds is a very prominent feature IMHO
The canopy detail was lacking so I decided to redo the framework
Thin styrene strips and some Crystal Clear cement. I opened up the LHS slider window as well

Image

I also sanded off the sad little wipers...hope I have some PE somewhere :
Will add some rivets to the surface 0.5mm metal rivet
Not withought some swearing, hull is mostly together

Image

I left the middle sections loose to allow the smaller fronts to align. In trimming off some interfering alignment pins, one lodged in the white glue for the floor and stopped the halves from seating. I could not figure out why it wouldn't push together like it did in the test fit and broke the thinned area over the crew door. Took it all apart and found the infernal bit of styrene wedged in between :wall: :bash:

Got a quiet, rainy Father's Day afternoon left to myself...so I modelled
Started step #7 of the PE instructions....the engine cover. Yikes!!! Not much to go on for landmarks in the plastic, gotta kind of wing it. You have to cut stuff out and do holes and such, I decided to thin the area so the PE panel will sit flush and open up only the screen area.

Image
Image

Image

And in situ, but unfinished

For the top centre piece I opened it all the way up. Looks pretty cool, even if no one in their right mind would cut and scrape away at a perfectly good model to stick replacement bits on :wtf:
Got the tail attatched and it's light in place too
Image

Good progress, LOOOONG way to go
:cheers2:

Brilliant. This is where for work makes me think "I need a whirly bird." Of course I'd have to somehow make it look as good as yours and I'm not nearly as skilled with the modifying as you so I just go back to watching yours.:

Thanks bud, glad someone is following this butchering. So let us continue with "The Hack Job" on the tail assembly

Image

I put a little brass line in to replicate the rotor drive shaft that comes up the tail to the tail rotor. Otherwise it is a blank space through the metal mesh in the tail and looks weird.
Image

Interested to see how this will handle the paint which is the next step

jnbattleship wrote: Tue Apr 04, 2017 6:47 pm Last time I had to spray whole airframe yellow a friend of mine gave me a pointer that worked charms:
a) white primer
b) matte clear coat (apparently primer was not enough matte, I went with it though and it seemed to work)
and yellow went on just wonderfully!

"Don't know if you have tried thinning Tamiya with cellulose thinner Scott I tried it on the Roberts Yamaha some time ago Tamiya paint sprays fabulously when thinned this way I mix about 40% paint 60% thinner and it dries super quick and smooth. Just a thought hope you don't mind mate :cheers2:"

So I took both of these suggestions to heart when I planned my spraying. Plus I am almost out of both my yellows and can't make it to LHS until weekend
Ultimate White primer...done real thin and then Tamiya flat yellow thinned with cellulose (lacquer thinner) this absolutely pops the flat yellow and it sprays wonderfully. Here is the sliding side door
Image

I am hoping the same will be for the Tamiya X8 Lemon Yellow gloss final coat

Thanks to Gary (RossiM1) and jnbattleship for making me think a bit before spraying like I always would. We shall see how the final coat goes down in the next day or so

I wasted tons of yellow spraying a Lotus egg car two years ago.....the yellow just sloshed around on the surface and would not stick.
Now with a rough flat yellow coat, I am hoping the gloss yellow will lay down nice and smooth...and maybe a bit more experienced with an airbrush too.

Looking real mellow in yellow Scott, why not just gloss clear coat the flat yellow think it should achieve more of the satin finish the real bird is possibly? just a thought.

Ya. I was thinking that too...hmmm will see. Definitely going to test that out
Flat Tamiya's are my favourite to spray by far...they go down so nice and smooth and dry quick
This yellow was a pleasure to spray compared to that Lotus nightmare two Easters ago..thanks for your input on spraying  :

Drilling holes and mods for the side pod wiring
Image

My red SMD LED lights still not here from China, so going to do a white one and paint the cover red. Other side has a nice green SMD LED
Had to make sure holes were large enough for the LED to thread through...poor planning on my part as should have done this earlier and just threaded the wire through a smaller hole :wall:
Image

Here it comes through the body, through the hole in the little wing and then into the side pod....of course nothing lined up, had to hack out some room for the wire and the little LED to travel
Image

Lots of slack of wire in that last pic, but I can stuff it back into the body
Progress, if ever so slow
:cheers2:

Oh crap, what a Saturday
I have killed a Minion in my spray booth
Image

Clogged TWO airbrushes and dropped one on the floor, just a mess, but got the paint done

Then started on the tail rotor.
Was doing pretty good and then dropped the PE for it....no problem, wood floor, high powered LED it will be easy to find.
NOPE? Gone, lost to the wood floor monster. I had cut off stuff and had it all prepped for the PE additions, so what to do???
I drilled six tiny holes and used copper wire to replicate the details for the stock kit rotor
Image

Got it to here, one more red stripe to finish

Thanks man :cheers2:
I have only clear coated the round part on the main rotor, but as per a suggestion from RossiM1, I am just going to clear the flat yellow as it does give a great finish and I don't want to F it up now :o

Tell me honestly.....

Image

Are my PONTOONS big enough????
They seem kind of smallish to me

I got her clear coated and tucked into a closed cupboard so I don't mess with it and get fingerprints all over her

I am glad you caught the innuendo.
If a woman ever asks about her pontoons, the polite answer is that they are perfect...unless she wants to make them bigger, then that's ok too :D

Excellent work, buddy !

- "The pontoons look just perfect to me - I like them just the way they are" :D

I'm starting to get very curious what the LED lighting, really looking forward to see the chopper when it's finished. It's looking great in that yellow colour :thumb2:

:cheers2:

Thanks Tommy.
Ya the front two LED's are wicked bright, look really cool in the testing
The cockpit one...meh kind of dull and will be hard to see I fear
I am hoping the tail and pontoon ones will be ok, they are more subtle than those blazing front two lights
