three jeeps and a baby

Post by krusty69 »

my entry in the group build. sorry no baby, I just couldn't think of a better title. :wall:

this will be a diorama of my deployment to honduras in the mid 80's.
hard to believe this was almost 40 years ago.:
if i remember correctly it was one of the earlier times the Marines used caat teams. ( combined anti armour teams), a tow jeep from the regimental tow company, a jeep from the dragon platoon of the weapons company, and a heavy machine gun jeep from the new heavy machine gun platoon of the weapons company.

no real doctrine, just a bunch of 19 year olds tearing around the countryside  God that was a fun deployment.
i had pictures but they were lost in one of my moves so this will be created from my minds eye. that was a great time of change in the Corps, President Regan was pumping a lot of money into the military and we were getting a lot of new equipment. i know for a fact we still had the steel pot helmets and m16A1 rifles, the flak jackets i'm not so sure. when i first got to the fleet we still had the Vietnam flak jackets, and when i got out we had the camo. so i think i will use a mix of the two between the different units, regiment and battalion received equipment at different times. The merdc paint schemes could also be different depending on the deployment so i may do different schemes between the jeeps.

well i've the jeeps and a lot of aftermarket goodies, some figures. i still need more figures.

the tow jeep had a gunner and a driver/a gunner. the machine jeep had a driver/ a gunner and a gunner. the dragon jeep had a driver/squad leader/gunner and a a gunner and another gunner and a gunner. that was my jeep and i'll tell you that was one crowded jeep :jd: four people two m47 dragon tubes two launch units, a m60 machine gun, packs, water cans, c rats.

i still need a lot of stowage and i'm trying not to think about how to do a jungle dio. :wall:

i have been wanting to do this for a long time and i'm glad for the chance to try now :th:
down side is i have a new job and they are forecasting 60-70 hour weeks for the next couple of months. yeah i can buy lot's of modeling stuff, but time is going to be hard to find. i'll try my best. so welcome aboard this should be fun

Great stuff! Such a shame you can’t find any photos man, I would’ve loved to have seen them.

Really looking forward to this one, big trip down memory lane for you, I’m more than happy to ride along.

Good luck with it, hope you find some spare time.

The build sounds good by itself, but add in your personal historic connection and this a must watch.

well 69 hours at work last week and no bench time at all
only worked 10 hour shifts the last couple of days and have actually got a little bit done, though I di fall asleep while working on some photo etch yesterday
they asked us today if we would be willing to do assembly work at home, if it gets any worse out there.
they would drop off material one day and pickup finished product the next.

i hope everybody stays safe hunker down and make sure you have plenty of glue and paint on hand

hey guy's got some things done this weekend. the jeeps are finished and primed along with some of the part's. used a bic lighter and a unused machine gun mount to form the guard around exhaust pipe. I hope to get into the figures and stowage next week. still working a lot. but if it comes screeching to a end, I want to be at my bench not the one at work

thank's aircadet I've been watching your b-29 build. I was lucky enough to be deployed to Tinian for a couple of weeks and got a chance to see the pit where the bomb's were loaded into the aircraft. a very sobering experience.
well I've had two days off this week, the first time in a month. glued all the figures together, not going to use all of them but I can use the painting practice.
received a email from ak interactive this morning they were closing for at least a couple of weeks  I was going to do a bulk order on Friday, I have no figure paints, and it's way cheaper to buy direct from them than it is getting them in the states :wall:
got all the figures primed, and the web gear. and the second color on the jeeps.
tried my masking technique, cut a mask from a piece of tape. lay another piece of tape over it and use it for a guide. it worked out to be easier to just cut three masks side bye side.
I've worked in the motor pool and the paint is a little like hand grenades, close is god enough

well finally got some bench time this weekend. wasn't real happy with the way the masking was going. and so I had a bottle of ammo liquid mask I thought I would give that a try. bit of a learning curve but I think I cot the hang of it at the end. I guess we will see when I remove it and the masks.
sprayed the field drab, I'll tell you i'm becoming a big an of the hataka paint mixed with mlt it sprays so nice and the colors look spot on. 17ml bottle with a shaker included. also got some paint on the wheels' and stared at the box of figures :wall:

well thanks for looking i'll try to post a little more often

thanks guys
well the camo is pretty much done. tried three different ways of masking. used Tamiya tape for the sand, laid it on the cutting mat and cut to the shape, was worried the tape lost to much adhesive but didn't have any bleed thru. used ammo's liquid mask for the black, a little learning curve to get the right shapes. and had a little paint flaking when I removed the mask. I used poster putty for the big area's, pulled a few photo etch parts. but all in all i'm pretty happy with the way they look.
so a little touch up fix the missing etch and then off to clear for the decals

thanks

got some aqua gloss squirted on before work. and lo and behold a mere 8 hours later it's dry.
( 10:40 pm and still 91 degrees out ) it's a little earlier than normal for that
decals tonight :wall: a couple of those kits were from ebay and god only knows how old they were. I think one decal sheets started cracking when I looked at it hard. well not many needed, so I got the wheels painted and installed. will start the weathering and detail painting this weekend.

did a pin wash on the jeeps. and started the detail painting. tough painting today, 88 degs with 14% humidity. comfortable with the fans on. but the paint skins real fast, got to get the wet pallet in operation :violin:
sprayed the base coat on the figures and will brush paint the rest of the camo. and started to paint the stowage

hi guy's
i been getting a little done, worked on the rifles. painted the stocks and handguards black and the metal bits ammo's gunmetal, and not even close :wall: . I then tried some hataka gunmetal and that wasn't much better :bash: . the closest I've seen was alclads gunmetal which is a real dark blue black, and of course I don't have any :pistols:. now at this point in time the m16a1 was reaching the end of it's service life and the rifles were pretty beat up. I think the recievers painted with the alclad and then drybrushed with aluminum, will give me the look, that i'm looking for.

also got the seats painted with Vallejo panzer aces canvas. the color didn't look quite right so I hit them with ak brown figure filter and i'm happy with the way that they look. also got the brake, turn signals, and headlights painted. installed the seats. just need to get cracking on the figures and stowage. and the dio part of this which to be honest i'm starting to worry about

again thank's for looking

thank's hawkmoon.
well worked on the figures today, I thought the initial color was going to be good. I fished out a old pair of cammies today to see how they would look. the brown was to light :bash: , so I mixed field drab with red brown and that was really ugly so imixed in some brown leather and that wasn't bad

the green and the sand look a little light but I think a filter will get them close to the real thing.
also started working on the stowage

as always thanks for looking

hi guys
I did a dark wash with migs dark wash, and i'm calling the weathering done other than the tires. that will be done when the dio is ready, they just need a flat coat and I can start adding the stowage

worked on some of the stowage, and some on the figures. they look a liitle to brown and i'll add more green after I paint the sand and black.

well I've been plugging along, but i'm at that stage where a couple hours of work really doesn't show a lot of progress. the color callouts I've been using for the woodland uniforms has been off, so i'm having to mix paint to get the right shade. but they are getting there
the figure on the right was the called out color, the one on the left when I darkened it

I got the added to the camo and it's not looking to bad the sand color is a little bright, but I think washes and filters will tone that down. still a little too much brown I think i'll go back with green and break up some of those blotches

ok yesterday day was sci fi day, today is 80's day.
started on the dio base. now i'm really new at this dio thing so bear with me. I layed down a layer of das air hardening clay over a foam board, i'm going to lay the road in a couple of days after it's dry.
I also started on the skin of the figures, now i'm am not a figure painter :wall: , but I want to get better at it. using ak paints I painted a layer of base flesh and when that had dried, I mixed light flesh with ak thinner to the point it was almost a wash and painted. i'm happy with the color I just need to add highlights and shadows. wish me luck with that

got the web gear on the figures, and a highlights on the flesh. maybe tomorrow I can get the shadows done.

the build is cruising along. shot a flat coat on the jeeps, and got the windshields and pioneer gear installed. just need to add the stowage and some light weathering. finished up the figures added belt kit and gloss coated for some light washes.

also worked on the dio base. i'm in way over my head but what the hell. used ak asphalt for the road. now the dio curled the base and I pushed it flat and used putty to fix the cracks. I layed to thick a layer of the asphalt and got some great potholes and cracks in the road. I think i'm going to weather the road and then add some patches, like the road was fixed at some time.
not sure about this dio thing :wall: but it's a great learning tool.

allright three jeep sunday :th:
I've decided to finish the jeeps one at a time. add the stowage and finish the crew. started with the tow jeep, used hasagawa 1mm tape for the pack straps. and added all the fiddley bits.

also worked on the dio base used mig filters to age the road, and ak wet terrains and dry ground to lay in the base. the dry ground was way to light. I mixed it with brown paind but still does not look right will have to fix that with paint later on. only my second dio and the first I used mini art vacuum formed buildings, so i'm trying to figure this out as I go :bash:

having a lot of fun with this :cheers2:
