Tamiya 1/12 R1M - First build!

Post by LWWales »

Hi guys! I had this up in the WIP section and now I'm done! For those who want to see the WIP: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=28378

The model turns out quite different from the kit. I wanted to go with the 20th anniversary colours, so I got some decals from Blue Stuff and paint from zero paints. I wanted to keep it true to the original R1, so the frame is an aluminium colour.

I also got the Top Studio detail up set.

There's a few parts that aren't too good, and if you spot something that could have been better, let me know! Or any tips, send 'em my way! With this being my first, I plan to improve

Now, shh, pictures!

Oh this is excellent
Really spot on. Built my first bike a while and found they come out so real and display extremely well
Keep at it, looking forward to seeing your next one

'If you spot something that could have been better.....'

With the model itself?? Literally zero, it's really well made! But if you do want some critique, then the only thing I would suggest is finding a plain white/grey background to put behind your finished model when you take photos, this would really bring it to life, and make it look like a full sized bike, the only thing giving the scale away is your bench in the background.

Thank you guys! It really means a lot especially coming from you two!

I'll take your tip on board and get a few new photos tomorrow. Your comments have gone some of the way to inspiring me to purchase my next bike! I'm currently working on Tom's Supra, but once that's done I'll be doing the Tamiya Kawasaki ZX-RR with the top studio super detail set!

Have you got a build thread running for the Supra? I’ve got this lined up to build after my next two projects, one of my favourite cars ever when I was growing up, I’d love to see how you do with it. I had the 1/10th scale Tamiya RC version of it when I was younger, I can’t tell you how much I loved that thing haha!

Nice! I had an RC supra as a kid, too, though it was a garish orange one, I forget the brand. Put some PVC pipe on the wheels so I could do some skids!

I don't have a thread currently, but I do have quite a few pictures, so I'll get one up! :D

Thank you very much! I'm doing a car currently, but not really feeling it, so I think I'll be online shopping tonight :shhh:

Just WOW!! :thumb2: My 10th attempt didn't look that good.

Love the detail that you have everywhere, from the chain to the handlebars, and the brakes - it's fantastic!! :thumb2: :thumb2:

Looking forward to your next bike build!

Thanks for the feedback! All these comments are making me want to shelve the supra for now and buy the ZX-RR kit!

I really want to do the YZR-M1 but I can't find a kit at a decent price anywhere. I want to throw a Top Studio set at it too

I want to do the Kawa next as well, but trying to get my skill level up a bit as it's one of my favorite MotoGP bikes - wish Kawasaki would come back to MotoGP!!

The way your YammerHammer turned out, I can't wait to see what you do with a race bike. :thumb1:

:cheers2:

Yeah, I hear'ya on the prices... all these Tamiya MotoGP bikes have been discontinued, for awhile now, and can get kinda stupid money on ebay. I pick one up every time I see a good price on one, that's how I got the Pramac Ducati I'm working on now, was a decent Buy It Now price so I just jumped on it as I have wanted this kit for about 4 or 5 years now.

I have a pretty good stash, which YZR-M1 are you looking for?? I would maybe do a trade or sell one... depending on what you have. :thumb1:

Ooooo, while that's an interesting prospect, I have nothing to trade, haha! I did just get the last '04 YZR-M1 from Spot Model for £29, so a bit of a bargain I think!

I'd love to get the'05, '09 or the Honda RC211v, though

Top work! Can you share what paint you used for the seat? From the pictures it perfectly imitates the leather.

R1M is definitely on my wishlist as my next bike build.

Thank you! I used the same paint as the fairings, it was the Zero Paints '98 R1 red, I just sprayed from further away and then used Tamiya panel liner for the shadowy parts

It was a real fun kit, I just finished a car, the Castrol Supra, I I had more issues with that the bike!
