Vincent Black Shadow Revell 1/12

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

I think I am going to putter away on this one for a bit as it seems to have my imagination
I am going to try and change the thick plastic wheel spokes to metal ones.
Image

I spent Sunday afternoon after chores making a wheel jig

Image

Image

It can be tightened up to hold the wheel hub tight in place

Next chrome will be removed and then the spokes too

Got the chrome off in 30 second, like literally 30 seconds in the oven cleaner

Image

Then laid out the holes in pen...bit confusing trying to see the pattern  :

Going to take a slash at redoing all the spokes and making a proper double row and in scale ?

I used easy off to strip chrome on the Miura build, couldn't believe how quickly the stuff works :thumb2: :thumb2:

Been studying your photo, and I'm still confused! It'll be interesting to see how this is done. That's a good-looking bike.

Thank you everyone for the interest
Did some reading and looked at some posts of MFH instructions for spoke lacing. You can see the over-under alternating spokes drawn light-dark
Image

I printed my wheel photo out, numbered the spokes from the rim side and then numbered the hub where they came in.
I discovered the alternating odd-even pattern develop and labelled the odd numbered spokes and the red dot they insert into

Image

Now I have the pattern makes sense in my head :D

Oh you were not the only one :
I was scratching my head and then when I did just the odd numbers of spokes the pattern jumped out at me.
The MFH instruction sheet helped as well to see that the spokes alternate from top to bottom of the hub

Yes I watched his video on it
He used a fishing line and threaded to posts, cemented everything and cut the threads.

Tom Grigot build the same kit as me and I am following more of what he did

I like the metal rod approach, way less messy. Albion alloys do a slide fit brass tube 0.3, 0.5, 0.7mm which your most likely already aware of. Should replicated the spoke tensioners well enough.

I have a fine metal rod but it is just a tad small
The test spoke I have is a brass wire that is perfect, BUT you have to pull it taught to be perfectly straight.
I risk having small bends if I use it. Still exploring my options
Waiting also on a micro-vise I got from Uschi Vander groot in Germany...that looks cool

A technique I've used to straighten and slightly harden wire to make it stay straight is to cut a length of wire maybe 2 or 3 feet long, clamp one end in a vise, and grab the other end with pliers, and give it a strong, steady pull. I've usually been able to feel a slight give in the wire that lets me know the wire has stretched enough to remove any bends, and slightly harden the wire. Then you cut the wire into appropriate lengths for the wheel.

After work I made ten spokes from the 48 G copper wire.
Heat annealed and quenched one to see what it did...meh it was softer and floppy
Image

Image

After dinner, chores and puppy walk, got three spokes #’ers 1,3 and 5 cut fit and drilled. I have not glued anything yet.
Image

I am thinking I will completely remove the center hub from the plastic spokes so I can turn the hub and sand it smooth
I have enough reference points and the opposite side’s spokes as help if I get lost
Pretty happy with this start, going to look cool when done😎

Not sure what size you intend using. I seem to be inundated with 0.3 brass and very bendy, but the 0.5 and 0.7mm seem to be stiff enough.

The Jigster is a expensive little blighter but will never let you down. Those pens are interesting as well.
I bought a tank transporter from them and it arrived water soaked. They sent me a new decal set plus some other diorama stuff like grass mats and the flocking type as a apology. Yet it wasn't there fault it was the freight companies stuff up. I was very impressed with them.
:th: :th: :cheers2:

EDIT... Your already ahead of me as I was posting.....looking great.

I did something like that to the ten I made with my pliers and then I squished the wire in the little vice shown to get everything square.
Reinforced the notion that heat annealing softens metal...yep it got more bendy with heat
I will try you way too :th:

This is the brass for the spokes; I switched down a size of brass from the spool stuff to allow better access of all spokes to the crowded hub holes.

Thanks guys :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2: :D

It is tedious work but actually a bit fun
Will be interesting doing the other side as it has three air valves on it and then fitting the halves together
The rear tire is a solid block, hard as a rock, so the halves will have to be cemented from opposite sides into this tire
The front tire is flexible rubber
Ahh REVELL
I have an feeling I am going to be making many parts for this bike
