Let me chuck this into the ring concerning the 3 air valves. Sounds a bit silly having 3, could it be that these were in fact one air valve and 2 rim locks which were there to stop the tyre turning on the rim.

BigWall wrote: Sun Jul 19, 2020 4:33 am Absolutely fabulous! Do you have any idea why 3 valve stems? Balance?
I am so glad you asked that.....I intended to. Was a bit worried to be the only one out of the loop....
Never in my life have I seen a tyre with more than one.
:th: :cheers2:
I've seen multiple valves in the off roading world where one is used as normal and the second has a larger bore to facilitate airing down faster. Nice idea but rather pointless overall. This obviously doesn't apply in this case. My google-fu is lacking so I haven't found anything online so far. Being as this was the first super bike, I can see them trying new ideas that didn't amount to anything.

Not a bad theory. Some type of bead lock.

I have posed the question to some motorcycle experts, we shall see what we come up with

EDIT: my English source says one air valve and two security clamps to keep the tyre from moving
Revell moulded everything to look the same :

So I ground out the rear tire rubber on my drill press sanding drum
Got it so the both sides snap in, just have to mess with the internal rim edges to let both sides of the rims sit flat
I hate when the nipples poke out and don’t let things sit flat; Hold up a minute, I really like it when the nipples poke out..... ;)

Mystery solved! Great guess Digger.

Nice ... err ... nipple work? Such an improvement over the kit piece.

I hope so, they do look pretty cool
Thanks for looking :cheers2:

Now starting the front wheel, I am being more careful to keep the hub square...I found the rear one is just a smidgen out of true and a bit wobbly
So I did an opposing side spoke #19 and didn't remove the hub completely to keep everything centered
Last time I cut off all the spokes, spun the hub and sanded it all smooth which was great but I don't think I got it exactly back into the middle :
Maybe a modification to my jig to force the hub to be centered would be smart

Yes nipple it is.. I have built mountain bike wheels in the past and the nipple of course is what tightens or loosens the spoke tension to keep the wheel round and centered. Be glad you don't have to worry about that! .. or do you :jd:

Looking great Scott! Very realistic!

It's a good jig, all you have to do is fence the rim in with 5 or 6 pins/nails so you have a automatic centre then chop out your spokes. Rim can be removed then replaced.
:th: :cheers2:

Ps....your good at this maybe we can all send our rims to you on a contract basis :thumb1:

Interesting thoughts
In the next iteration of this jig, I forsee a centre hub seating position and a rim seating position.
I would also make the hub myself and probably the rim too so I can have nice smooth internal surfaces with no gaps. Or at least have the halves cemented and drilled and internally sanded smooth first.
This set of wheels is going to have a center rim seam that will be hard to deal with

@digger303 is a great guy to bounce off any mechanical issues and such
You have a lot of good problem solving skills in that Aussie noggin; helped me fix my drill press :th:

Too kind Scott by half my good man. What I want to know is how did you get a perfectly square centre cut to cut the rim exactly in the middle. :th: :cheers2:

I was thinking it could be done with the wheel rotating and cutting with some sort of thread.

edit.... since been informed the wheel rim comes in the kit as 2 parts to begin with...so makes my question quite redundant.

Getting close to front wheel finish. I have been plodding away at this after work for a bit every night
Friday night I made all the 3mm spoke supports ;) that are the hardest part as they go flinging around when cut through and you have to hands and knees it under the desk or start another.
So a nice quiet Saturday morning I spoked all that was left. Now just the air valve and locks

I have a few older Pocher kits that have wire laced wheels. I am a bit less intimidated by them now.

That is a TRULY impressive bit of model engineering!! If you ever get bored with the day job I am told there is an ever growing shortage of crafts men (spokesmen?? :) ) - to do the real thing on both sides of the big pond - you could consider that as a career change.... :)

Excellent result on the wheels...: :

You were a bit worried about cementing the 2 halves together and the possible clean up working around all those spokes. In the end was it a non issue ? From the pic view I can't see any evidence of a join.

Ha, I just snapped them in and haven’t even worked in the seams yet
I also drilled out the rear hub to a bigger diameter and compensated for the off centered location with larger hole and a brass tube insert. Now the wheel spins nicely on my moto jig.
I was super careful with the front rims and kept that center hub dead in the middle

You were a bit worried about cementing the 2 halves together and the possible clean up working around all those spokes. In the end was it a non issue ? From the pic view I can't see any evidence of a join.
    :th: :th: :cheers2:
Ha, I just snapped them in and haven’t even worked in the seams yet
I also drilled out the rear hub to a bigger diameter and compensated for the off centered location with larger hole and a brass tube insert. Now the wheel spins nicely on my moto jig.
I was super careful with the front rims and kept that center hub dead in the middle
    Well done :th: :th: :cheers2:

So I have fully finished the wheel spoking and have tucked everything back safe and sound into the box
This part of the build is done and I am going to move back to other stuff
    Maybe

I've only just seen this thread after seeing your post in the Friday night section. At first glance I thought, 'they look nice, good to see a kit with quality detail', it was only after that I realised it was scratch built.

Absolutely stunning work. This goes beyond modelling, its engineering!

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

I've seen that video too. I'm considering doing the same for an old Alfa f1 car, but only when I'm feeling brave!

    Indeed
I got the rear end together and on the jig, but the front frame and forks involve Revell chrome and I usually strip that
Some pretty poor location points and horrid instructions. either show me exactly where the part goes with a before and an after photo of part installed. Doing neither is of no use. Lots of forward jumping trying to figure this complicated bike out

Great to see the build up and running. When I got a notification for this I thought, what is this? I dont remember this. Then I saw the delay since the last post. Well worth the wait me thinks.

Looks like you're off to a cracking start with the engine and frame mate.

Really nice news about the pooch too :th: :th: :th:
