Bonhams have been having a summer sale
The International Classic Motorcycle Show (Three-Day Auction)
we are on the last day and there are a few Vincent's coming through, be interesting to see what they fetch. I have been following the auction on Invaluble.com as its a place where I sometimes buy vintage toys but its best viewed on the Bonhams web site. Some of the early triumphs and BSA bikes went very cheap  lots of bargains to be had if you have some cash to invest.

due to start 10am uk time

Its an unusual frame with no downtube
Yep a bit of a weird frame indeed :
There is no front down tube and the frame attaches in to the engine heads
But I made some progress late last night on the front forks

FFS

I manage to bump the build and break off the front forks😡
Turns out it was a good thing as when I was re-checking alignment, the handlebars would not have seated.
So I suppose it was a necessary accident🤔

Back together, but I have messed up a nice smooth gloss black frame and Molotow chrome bolts with finger prints

Trouble never lacks company! Get one thing fixed and find another problem! :bash:

I like the necessary accident idea too. Kind of like saying we never retreat, we simply advance in another direction. ;)
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Exactly David, well put
Ok I think I have her sorted back together and some paint refinishing done for black and chrome
I also drilled out the rear suspension pivot as Casper had said
So there are three brass rod support points now

Image

This gets the bike more stable into the jig and shows me I have a bit of a waggle to deal with to get things aligned better
Funny today as during some research I hopped on this page and a gent had the same handle bar location issues and he cut off supports just like I did. Sympathy in numbers? At least I am not crazy and saw the same problem

Got the front forks assembly glued up to the rear via the engine cylinder heads yep, that is how it works :

Image

I studied photos and got the high tension leads, spark plugs and their connectors made. Little brass spark plugs painted grey with connectors made. The wires loop forward to the magneto just behind the front tire (a cover goes over)
The fuel lines and carbs are even more complicated :wall:

Quite a design and the engine is supposedly an absolute beast that runs and runs
Would never have thought of bolting frame to the cylinder heads, but hey it works. Learn something every day

Having a bit more fun with her now that I can have her in the jig better with the frame glued up
Today I will lock her in more securely than my temporary brass rods
The tilting feature is really helpful; I would have to jack up the other jig to angle it…this one just tilt the table :th:
Liking her so far

Ok decal time.
Certainly not decals for the faint of heart

Image
The yellow is the old glue and it does not want to let go. I was lucky to get this off in one piece
I left it in the hot water for a long time and added Ultimate decal solutions. Finally I could bend the paper and tease the decal off.

Image

Now Revell made no mention of the decal to go on to here until the very end of the instructions. Weird as you HAVE to put this on the frame before the headlight and other stuff get in the way. Lucky I was looking so far ahead and caught that

This bike has a lovely aesthetic, just gorgeous really

Very nice build Scott. It's looking great!

I agree, it has such an elegant shape....right up until they threw in the towel designing the seat. Still a beautiful bike though!

My personal preference is the second one with the black, chrome and aluminum look. Not because it's the greatest colour scheme, but because the the first one is so much chrome and shine it takes away from the details. If that makes any sense however it's your kit and you have to please yourself mostly.
Perhaps if the first one had some black chrome it might change my mind a lot.

I HATE chrome but that first picture is the shizzle!

Unfortunately, I think you would lose detail either with all the chrome or the black.

I think you're right Digger, some black chrome would set it off.

The chrome pipes really stand out nicely.

Ya guys I think it needs to be a modified cafe racer.
I agree with not too much chrome. Black, gold and silver/chrome more like the second picture
Bend the handlebars, alter the exhaust, clip the fenders
I have to figure out a seat…hey I know a guy who just made a leather Harley seat on his kit

I like the straight bars on the second bike 8-) and the two rear springs look much better than the original dampeners. The wrapped exhaust pipes look 8-) I'm hoping to do mine like that with some medical tape if I can find it

what have I started   sorry scott :)
would look cool though :) Not sure how to emboss leather without the appropriate tools but a blunt knife or similar (stamp) hit with a small mallet on damp leather before you dress the seat could work but I don't know how it will come out on the thinner softer leather.

Well ok, I have decided to go a direction on the bike
Echos of Jeff Decker’s ‘52 Vincent Shadow
Image

with my own twists

Image

Image

It won’t be an exact copy. I have to sheild the chain as it is only moulded as a chain where exposed. Gotta figure out a seat too.
I am liking the gold spokes and may keep that too

Had to pin the damn front forks as they popped again when I looked at them funny
So 0.5mm brass pins into 0.5mm drilled holes in these three spots where the ca glue failed

I am going to do the outer wheel rim in Molotow chrome as seen here on the rear

Looking squish ( you keep laughing at smicko ) ;) Shame about the forks giving you the works.
Do you think some of that metallic powder worked into the black would be any good ?
:th: :th: :th:
:cheers2:

This is a Revell: weak frame, poor visual instructions, reinforcements necessary. I just built the Baja dirt bike and knew to reinforce it
I knew I should have done brass inserts at test fit stage, but I painted final colour on the forks instead
I knew the pathetic locators would not be strong but I kept fitting the forks with glues
I knew that ca glue doesn’t like to be stressed laterally and the forks were all glue retained but I patched them up twice
Tonight I broke off the RHS fork again except for at the point where I had added a pin already ….so I added brass pins to all joints
Mechanical retention + cement usually wins

Oh like that chrome effect powder  not a bad idea, might try that
I have some
:th: For looking my friend :cheers2:

The metallic powder sounds interesting and the Molotow chrome rim looks the part :thumb1:
