Old wood effect - how to do it?

Post by belfer »

Hi
I would like to achieve the effect of heavily damaged wood on this part of the floor.

I have this kit and I wonder how to do it

Are these gray shades more like a filter?

Those colours are just regular acrylic colours, probably good for brush-painting. I'd basecoat the wood with light grey brown and medium brown, maybe with burnt umber applied between the planks, and then start drybrushing the grey tones over the planks. Finally you can make an acrylic was or filter out of the browner colours and tone down the grey colours.

Edit: This is just how I'd do it, I have not done this in a good while and am no expert.

Go to YouTube and look up Night Shift. Click on videos and scroll down until you see the video "Painting a miniature barn made from styrofoam!" He did an amazing job painting weathered wood and shows exactly how he progressed with it.

Base coat it with a water based color such as Tommi says. then add some very fine oil based black or dark brown fine lines. Lightly moisten a wide brush with thinner and I mean almost no thinner on the brush and lightly drag it down the wood. If the grain is molded in use a oil wash.
At this point I went back and reread your question and it appears I misinterpreted it. You want to know how to use that set you bought and that is a different kettle of fish ...using all acrylics.
I don't believe the grays are filters, but no doubt could be used as such with some thinning.

in fact, I didn't treat these paint as filters, but as a base color.

By trial and error, something like that "came out of the brush"
