Brewster Buffalo…Chonk

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Well, been a moment since I built aircraft
This pudgy little fellow came from England via an auction
I watched one of the YouTube famous guys use it as a paint mule to test making models with oil paints…so that is my plan for the exterior camo. She looks better with wheels up so likely that too

Ya here it is, Plasmo
He goes to town oil detailing half the plane's fuselage

I did a bit of oil work on the second hull of a WNW plane, using an olive oil paint
I didn’t get around to finishing the second one off and used the acrylic paint on the other one

Looks like a little bruiser!

Keep this to yourself - one of the pictures you've posted is a P47 Thunderbolt, not a Buffallo

And I love that Plasmo guy, he's amazing.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Ya me too. need to get back to that WNW stuff

Yesterday I spent a few light headed moments, due to flu, messing with the Buffalo pilot
The styrene is extra hard and prone to chipping and his damn hands are both moulded up by his chin
So I cut off his arms and chopped up his belly so he can have normal pilot position.
This must be a very old Tamiya or a rebox of another kit
Then I got even more light headed and tired so slept for four hours in the middle of the day
Now the next day, at work and feeling really groovy :wtf:

Yes the old Hasegawa and Tamiya kits had jelly babies for pilots.
Sounds like your going to give him some character though.
I also feel for ya the flu season this year is a doozy, I've had the damn thing or variants of it 5 times now.....KINDA FED UP with it :)

That man caused me to go order one last night :hand: pretty handy to keep the flow going by drying the paint super quick. Not bad for straightening warping too on a low heat.

Cockpit looks awesome.
Off Topic
The heat gun is a very attractive tool to speed up painting. I was using the same tool to speed up decaling. It is incredibly easy to melt the plastic if there are thinner pieces around where you are working (speaking from recent experience). In that same vein re-heating the same part to move the warped plastic back into place is a very bad idea. Very useful tool, but it should be used with caution.

VERY true
Be super careful with this. A hair dryer is less aggressive , I use that for decals

Some more work on our Portly Pal, Chonky McChonkster

Image

I haven’t built a Tamiya kit for a while.
The locator tabs on parts are so nice vs the American car kits
You cannot put these stabilizers on wrong, the tabs won’t let you as they are left and right specific

Image

Image

Same with the engine cowling, the fat vs skinny tabs only let the parts align the correct way
Image

Image

Genius. Bandai is even better for this.

A razorback Thunderbolt snuck into your art pictures of the Buffalo. I don't think he could manage that in real life he's twice the size.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.

Just to point out that the Black and White scheme was for recognition not for camouflage as Dowding felt that it would help both combat and ground forces instantly recognise one of their own (like invasion stripes) it was partially reintroduced after 1940 but discontinued in 1941 (signal A279)after the RAF went on the offensive as it helped German Flak identify friend from foe!

great primer and black coats though, its coming on great!

A look at the tail tests for the camo
Love that olive green’s depth of colour

Image

Interestingly there is an insert for the box art camo and it is exactly 1:1 scale with the model

Image

This helps in marking out the camo swirls
But some dummy read his greens and browns wrong on the insert so my plane will be the mirror image of the box art :shifty: oops

Painting in the olive green oil on El Chonky
This is right after application with full on brush strokes. Have to let it dry to tonight and then blend in

Image

So what to blend with?
Plasmo used a #5 Tamiya flat brush….I have a # 3
Image
And a dry #3
Image

How about this big soft brush in your holder….ya, NO! Dusty and won’t stop letting loose brush hairs. Useless

Painted the brown on Thursday night. Not as nice as the olive green and harder to get the brush lines out.
Tried blending Friday after work, still too wet
Will let dry another night and try again Saturday

The green blended in nicely.
