#13 & 3/4 Mark's Revell 1/32 Heinkel HE-111 P-1

Hi guys
Captain 13 & 3/4 reporting for duty (yes that number is Scott's fault

)
So this will be my second entry in this sig
Besides the huge Lancer i will also be building the Heinkel HE-111 P-1 in 1/32 scale by Revell
Mostly because i wanted to do build that is a bit different from what i have been building this year
Almost all of those builds where jets and most had quite a selection of after market bits
That is nice to use but it makes a build harder and more time consuming
And i wanted something different
So just a out of the box build and a bit more weathering then what i do on my jets as i tend to keep them fairly clean in terms of the weathering
Most of the times just a wash and maybe some streaking but other then that nothing special
So this time i was thinking about chipping ,bare metal effects under that chipping ,rust on the exhausts , oil and dirt streaking
Basicly anything to make it look like a Blitzkrieg veteran as this version was used in 1940 and 41
So that is the plan ....sort of so let's have a look at the kit

So that is all that there is inside the box
And now the threads are up ,the bench is cleaned
All other builds are on hold and i am waiting to get started
I am thinking about starting out with this kit but on the other side i will be entering a kit in the Cold War GB aswell so maybe that get's started first
I still have a day to figure that out
So hopefully all the build will be going well
Take care
Cheers
Mark

You must have so much time to do two builds for this SIG

I didn't think there would be more than me building this big bugger! Just been reading the instructions and taking a look at my CMK resin add-ons. Should have time to get mine on the bench tomorrow. GOOD LUCK mate
ps: Should be interesting which choices we both make on the build?

Not really but i do have 2 weeks vacation/holiday in a couple weeks so i can do a lot then
And i have spend all of yesterday in the cave so i made a good start on the Heinkel
I am about to get started on painting the interior

thanks
I will be building it out of the box so that makes it easier for me
I have been doing a lot of upgrading on builds recently and i really wanted something easier for a change
It is a pretty good kit though and apart from some small bits it goes together quite fast

I hope so
But so far it looks like pretty nice kit
I have build the interior up to the point that i need to paint it
And i only had some trouble with the engines wich was a bit of my own fault
I hope to have the first update posted soon ....if work doesn't get in the way again

Looking very nice.
The engines are a bit fidely and i had some trouble getting them to fit on the wing
The parts that fit in the gap between the engine and wing had too much space but i managed to force the engines back in shape so it fits
It was caused by the engine not being alligned properly
Probably more user error then kit error

The detail is pretty good in the cockpit
In the rear it is a bit more basic but all you can see there is through those tiny windows so that won't be all that visible in the end
Hopefully i can get the interior painted in the upcoming days but i doubt i have enough paint for that

Well I am very jealous of the detail your kit has
The interior, engine and bombs look spectacular in plastic, can't wait to see them in paint!!!
Keep up the good work

Sadly no ,i struggled a bit with them aswell
The bulkhead that is supossed to be in there is a part i smiply didn't use as it didn't fit all that well
But the covers between the engines and the wing are the worst parts

As you can see here they didn't want to work with me
But a bit of filler will solve this
I just want to add all the big parts first so i can do all the filling at once
But i am still working on the tail section at the moment

Yeah it is bad
But a little bit of filler will fix that
Just need to wait untill the cave gets a bit cooler
The filler dries so fast it cracks up at the moment

Sadly, its the risk you run with Revell. They're not everyone's cup of tea and sometimes require a fair bit of TLC to get where you want the kit to be.
I'm in awe of guys who take these kits on and produce great results. It requires a skill set (and a mind set) that I just don't have. I get the quality versus cost argument but I would find these kind if issues really discouraging. I steer clear of them because I know it would sap my enjoyment of the hobby.
So hats off to you gentlemen, producing a silk purse from a sow's ear is a true test of skill

I would call it a calculated risk
Overall i don't think they make bad kits
Other could have more detail but that comes with a cost i guess

They have some ups and downs indeed
I wouldn't say that
But it can be fixed
The build is a bit on hold as i really need to get a masking set for all the glass
But most parts are build by now

Hi guys
Update time as the thread is falling behind a bit
Today will be about the interior wich is finished and then the next update will be for the last bit of the construction part of the build (wich is almost ready)
So what happened since last time

The interior parts where painted with several RLM colors from Vallejo modelair
The most is RLM02 but i can't remember the cockpit color
Then all the other colors where added with various Vallejo modelcolor paints

Mark Verploeg -

The bombs where painted

As where the other smaller parts
20180523_225017 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then i started drybrushing the parts
20180523_225033 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Wich is most visible on these parts as the drybrushing filled the panels a bit giving it a lighter shade in the middle
20180523_225559 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Allthough the seat here also shows it a bit better
20180523_225606 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Some chipping with metallic colors was added to the parts that get used a lot

And after a coat of satin varnish i gave it a wash with Mig productions dark wash (basicly it is black)
20180525_105318 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Once the wash and the matt varnish where dry i added all the windows
20180525_105603 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then the cockpit was finished by adding the side panels
20180525_112318 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
The bombs where placed
I had to remove a small strip from the supports on the inside of the bomb bay to get them to fit
20180525_112829 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
Then they where glued in place
20180525_112902 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
And the 2 fuselage sides where glued together
The nice part about the cockpit section is that you can just slide it in after the 2 halfs are joined together
But that is because i didn't glhe it to the backwall of the cockpit first but instead i glued that wall in the fuselage first
20180525_113343 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
The fuselage was then dropped in the wing section
20180525_113609 by
Mark Verploeg -
Flickr2BBcode LITE
And after a little bit of messing around with ca glue and putting some pressure on it i managed to get the gaps in between the wings and the fuselage a lot smaller
Still needs some filler though but not as much as it needed before
And that is all i have for now
Next time the last bit of the construction will be the subject of the update
Wich is not a whole lot anymore
The hardest part seems to be the landing gear but i skipped that and worked on the rest first so the landing gear is basicly the only thing i have left to do at the moment
And mask all 900 windows

but i am getting a Eduard mask set for that as some windows (underside mostly) are flush with the part that does need paint and i don't want to waste hours of work on masking (not my favorite part of the hobby)
So with a bit of luck i can start painting by the end of the upcoming week
And maybe finally start on my Cold War GB entry (yes the bombers have taken over)
But i will be getting a couple more kits aswell and those could all qualify for this sig aswell so maybe i will also be entering more builds here
But that is all future talk for now and nothing is certain at this point untill i crack open a kit
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers
Mark

Looking good Mark.
Hopefully all that glass means much of the interior detail will still be seen when its all closed up. I cant imagine how vulnerable those crews must have felt behind all that Perspex. I know its an illusion since the aluminium skin of the aircraft was no better but still, it must have taken some nerve to fly those things - and before anyone asks, I am not making any comment here re good guys / bad guys etc.

Thank you Stokesy
Atleast in the cockpit a lot will be visible
In the rear probably not so much unless i don't glue the roof on it so i can still remove that
But i agree bombers where a bit well ...fragile really
Only fighters had the luxury of having a armor plate at the back of the pilots seat and not even all of them had that
I heared the best chance of surving a engagement was in a P-47 as that had the most armor plating around the pilot but the plane itself could take a serious beating
There was a story about that in a "dogfights" episode once
The pilot was straffed 3 times by a FW-190 and survived
After counting more then 200 hits on 1 side the pilot stopped counting went out for a drink (i guess to celebrate his luck) but he only looked at the right side of the plane
He didn't even took the time to look at the left wich was also filled with holes from german 8mm and 20mm rounds
Most bombers couldn't even take such a beating on the fuselage and wing as their tanks would burn up and they simply crashed or the crew bailed out
So not the best of places to be in
But then again all frontline service was equally dangerous no mather wich side a soldier served on

Completely agree. At least they had parachutes and a chance to bail out. In WW1 the senior ranks refused to give the pilots parachutes as they felt it would lessen their keenness to fight - absurd!

True but they had some weird ideas on how to do things back then
I follow the youtube channel "the great war" that shows that war week by week
Really nice channel to watch and you get to see some of the most idiotic things that you could even think of now but what was common back then
Like a cavalery charge over 1000 meters of open ground against machine guns
Sereval 1000's casualties and try again the next day with the same result
But i would recommend that channel
I learned quite a bit about WWI that way

As said by Stokes it's still a gamble with Revell

True but they aren't as bad as some say
Since i got back to planes i had only a few kits that didn't need filler or a bit of extra work
And with about 20 planes i can count those on one hand
So i don't think it is a big deal
As long as the parts fit well enough to glue them and they sit right (saggy wings or stuff like that) then i don't really mind
And the gaps on this one are filled by now

Hi guys
Time for another update on this build
As you may have seen on the ISM Facebook page i finished building it and all i needed was to mask the windows but i wanted a mask set for that
I have one but for a different version
It still should provide most masks i need and stops me from going insane by doing all those windows my self
But the thread still needs some build pictures so here they are

I started out by adding the landing gear

And because the wheels are massive they should be easy enough to paint while they are on the plane
So i added those aswell

The glass nose was build

And the little belly hump for the gunner

The nose was fitted on the fuselage
Not the easiest of fits to be honest but because clear styrene is a bit brittle compared to normal styrene i didn't want to put as much force on it as i usually do with regular parts
It fits though but it took me a while

The glass covers for the cockpit and rear gunner where test fitted

They can also be placed like this
Not sure what i will do with the cockpit glass yet
The gunners shield will be more to the back

It still is clear enough to see everything inside

All the gaps where filled
And now with the exception of masking she is ready for painting
But i have this to help with the masking

It is actually for a H-6 version but as far as i can tell the H-6 and P-1 are mostly the same when it comes to the clear parts
So this should make it a whole lot easier and faster to mask everything
Amd that is all i have for now
The build is still at the same point as in the photo's
But hopefully that will change soon
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers
Mark

Mark you really amaze me
The build is fantastic, but what really strike me is how clean everything
I mean even on your test fits everything looks crisp, sharp and well prepared...no dust, extra stray tools, dog hair, messy paper towels
Really speaks to your attention to detail
My builds look like a dust bin in comparison...something to improve on
