Cadet Number One reporting for duty

And in keeping with the "Not just Star Wars" theme I'll be tackling this kit from 1998 - I had a quick look on e-bay and saw one up for sale for about £200 so had the build it/sell it dilemma but building it has won out
So here's a little background info
Adeptus Astartes: The Space Marines
Space Marines are the most powerful and dreaded of all warriors in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Each one of them is superhuman, having been made superior in all respects to a normal man by a harsh regime of genetic modification, psycho-conditioning and rigorous training. Equipped with fearsome bolters and encased in power armour, they are almost unstoppable.
Space Marines are organised into small independent armies called Chapters. There are around a thousand Space Marine Chapters, each one displaying its own heraldry and colour scheme. Tactical squads form the mainstay of each Chapter. Space Marines are versatile fighters, able to fight the enemy in close combat, or stay back and give supporting fire with their heavy weapons.
History
Games Workshop Space Marines were first introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader by Rick Priestley which was launched in 1987 and was the first edition of the table-top game rulebook. In this first incarnation, the religious themes that appeared in later editions were not as strong. They were described as having bodies and minds that had been toughened by "bio-chem" and "psycho-surgery"; no mention was made of "gene-seed" which would be introduced as the fictional world was developed.
The book Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned (by Rick Priestly and Brian Ansell, 1990) was the first book from Games Workshop to give a backstory for the Space Marines. It introduced the original 20 Space Marine Legions, and the Primarchs (genetic fathers from which the Space Marines were created). It also first described the Horus Heresy, the civil war of the 30th millenium in which nine of the Legions converted to the worship of the four main Chaos Gods.
Two of the original 20 Legions and their respective Primarchs are not named and are described as "redacted" from the records of the Imperium. Rick Priestley explained that this was to illustrate the Imperium's practice of erasing embarrassing or incriminating events and figures from history by removing them from Imperial records. This was a form of dishonour practiced by the ancient Roman empire as Damnatio Memoriae.
The Space Marines and their backstory have continued to evolve to this day and as well as the primary Warhammer 40,000 table-top game they have appeared in numerous other boxed games, novels and video games.
On a personal note I stuck with figure painting even after I drifted away from kit building, and about twenty or so years ago I started painting up a Space Marines Chapter in a Tiger striped colour scheme of my own devising, and after a quick rummage in the garage here they are
This is as far as I got with two tactical squads and a command squad - they're about 28mm tall
I don't know about you but that squad leader for squad two looks like he might have some "Canadian Dentist" in the gene splicing
I think it was while putting this together that I realised that I'd missed actually building kits and I was back on the slippery slope
The Tiger theme carried through to the 75mm Inquisitor figure too
So what's in the box
A leaflet with the info I posted above
And build instructions on the flip side
A certificate of ownership (didn't know that was in there!)
Most of the kit is resin
Which is well detailed and with a choice of heads... that one on the right again... I'll probably end up painting both
And a decal sheet and the rest of the parts... some of which are white metal
My originals were all brush painted with Games Workshop/Citadel paints with weird names like Goblin-Barf Orange and Butt-Crack Black or somesuch but this time around I'll be doing the base coating with an airbrush and breaking out my specially hoarded Unicorn Hair Windsor and Newton brushes for the detail work. The only orange I have in the Model Air collection isn't quite as vibrant as the tones above so I'll be experimenting with yellow primer to see if I can get the result I want.

Cheers Gary
I wish I could remember how much I paid for it in the first place! But it's been festering in the stash for about 20 years so I figured it was probably time to build it

Thanks guys - first up I'll be giving the resin a wash just in case there's any release agent hanging around after all this time

Cadet #1 Tomcat's Forge World Space Marine - Build Part 1

So in an attempt to make it feel like I've made a start so far I've washed the parts to make sure there's no release agent available and inspected them to see what kind of clean up is needed prior to priming, the torso and both heads are pretty clean but here's the hitlist for the other main parts.
There's a chunky remnant and some seam work to tidy up on the backpack
Casting defects on the rims of the shoulder pads
Holes to be filled and another remnant to remove on the left arm
Similar story on the right arm
A seam on the left hand
Tricky places to clean up on the legs
More holes to fill down the bottom of the legs but having test fitted the feet I don't think the remnants marked with the green arrows will foul them so that'll save some grief
And there's some seam work on both the boots to deal with
Finally I've been playing with priming under the model air orange and here's the results with the spoons primed from left to right with Red Oxide, Yellow and White (all Ultimate primer)
Although I was concerned with the brightness of the orange as it appears in the bottle the coat over the white primer is definitely vibrant enough and will be toned down after weathering.
So I'll plug away with the cleaning up and will check back in once the parts are mounted and primed (unless there's an intervening cock up)

That's a shame about the seams and such but some of it could be battle damage

But it's a thing sadly with resin I've just had a massive seam line on the back of thanos but keep plugging away at it you'll smash it out the park

Made a proper start on my resin kit tonight as well, flicking through your pics is like deja vu of what I’m up against, LOADS of work sanding and filling with nothing to show for it... d’oh!
I feel your pain #1, we can get through it though, make it so.

Right, three weeks to go so probably time to make a start right?
Last time around (how long ago?!?!?

) I'd worked out what needed cleaning up; well that's all been done and everything was attached to sticks and other holders before being given a couple of coats of Ultimate white primer to get us started and then laying down three coats of Vallejo Orange. So I ended up with a collection of orange bits on sticks
I then started working from the bottom up - boots were fairly easy, a Ultimate black base coat followed by a dry brush of Scalecolor Black Metal to scuff them up a bit
And then onto the legs. The joints were picked out with Andrea base black (actually a dark grey), with the additional pipes being painted with Black Metal again. I've got a little tidying up to do and then these areas will be given a black wash to provide depth. Then the right knee pad and the lower parts of the legs were painted with Andrea black shadow 3 (proper black!) with the top edge of the lower markings dry-brushed to give a "feathered" edge.
I had hoped to make a little more progress but at least it's under way and hopefully I can get it done in a couple of weeks...

So with the generous extension granted by our glorious leader I'm actually in with a chance of getting this finished by the second deadline
Having finished one semi-stalled project last week I've been pottering away on the leg section in the evenings this week
First up I added the Tiger stripes. The premise I'm working to here is that this Space Marine chapter issues their marines with a plain orange suit of armour and each marine then adds his own stripes so as a result no two are exactly the same - which nicely covers my inability to produce two sets the same

The stripes have had two coats of black and still look a bit patchy in places so I may well go back and give them another layer.
I've then worked the paler colour up the base of each leg, this has taken two coats of dry brushing with the base colour from Andrea's white set; subsequently I worked back around the top edge with black to redefine the edge as I wanted it, and I'll probably continue to pick away at this for the foreseeable future as I spot bits that aren't "quite" right
I've also made a start on the base - this was primed in Ultimate black and then had layers of three different Vallejo grey tones misted down to create the base colouration. I'll start working on weathering this in and picking out details when the paint's had chance to dry off completely.
But for the moment it's touch dry and gave me a chance to see how the legs & boots would work together on the base - as a result I appear to have created the opposite of a bust
That's all for now, I'm planning to start working on the torso next - thanks as always for looking

Well you've finally got both feet over the line now you just need arms head and body...
Does look rather cool though and I don't have the faintest idea of what it is

So far this week I've been working on the torso...
Firstly by blocking out the areas to be detailed in black
Around the back there's quite a bit of detail, but when I checked it'll all be hidden when the backpack is in place
Then I painted the the double-headed imperial budgie in gold
And finally the rest of the detail with the pipe-work and other metal parts picked out in "Black Metal" and the belt in the Andrea base white
I've started in on the base by giving it a heavy sludge wash and wipe of grime, and by the power of blu-tack here's how the parts look assembled...
Hopefully I'll get the arms done this week as well - thanks for looking

Quick update from last weekend's work - I managed to get the arms done.
Same process as the rest with blocking out the sections in black and then working the colours back in. The limb joints have been washed with Vallejo black, and the other joints and panel lines have had Tamiya black accent dribbled in...
Then added to the torso which in turn was added onto the legs - the bolt gun is just dry fitted at the moment to get the hands lined up
Shoulder pads & head on the hit list for this week

As with most things this summer life has thrown another banana skin our way and I'm a little behind where I'd planned to be by now but the marine is still moving in the right direction I think...
The head is done, sticking with the same process & palette I've used all along with the addition of Scalecolor Irati Green for the eyes
I've added a couple of decals to the left knee pad to indicate the Tactical Squad number - the decals are 20 years old and took a couple or three dousings in microset to sit down but they're just about there now and the final layer of varnish will dull down the shine (I hope)
Talking of decals, I'd previously used a black heart as the chapter insignia (don't know why - it was a long time ago and probably seemed like a good idea at the time) so I got hold of some inkjet decal paper and printed off my own decals...
Before finally deciding I really wasn't happy with the heart and freehand painted a stylised tiger paw instead... and then used an old decal from the spares drawer as the company numeral - again it's a bit shiny so hoping to dull that down with a little attention later on. I'll have a play with the inkjet ones on some scrap in due course.
Here's how it all looks together
And finally from the front
I've made a start on the bolt gun and backpack so hopefully I'll get them done this week and finish the odds and ends off with a bit of weathering this week.
Thanks as always for looking

Much to my surprise this week I've managed to finish off both the backpack
And the Boltgun
And here they are in place
Along with Yorick who's put in an appearance on the base - he's not glued yet and I'll decide his final resting place later
So that leaves me with a handful of resin pieces (a couple of pouches and a discarded gun) to finish off plus a collection of metal bits which have been cleaned up with a file and are now waiting for primer later today.
So all being well I'll get those done this weekend and get it all finished up in time!

Plans changed this weekend but the positive side of that was getting an unexpected morning at the bench today so I took the opportunity with both hands and pushed onwards...
The miscellaneous bits were all painted up; the packs with Andrea base black & black 2nd shadow followed by Vallejo black wash; the skull with Andrea base white and Vallejo brown wash; the grenades with Scalecolor Black Metal, Vallejo black wash and dry brush of GW Leadbelcher; the busted bolt-gun with Lifecolor rusts
I also painted up the seal but forgot to photograph it before it was attached with Andrea white, black & red 2nd shadow followed by several layers of brown wash - here it is attached (there was a decal with script on it but that just didn't fit the area required
And a couple of sessions on the base with MiG desert sand pigment brushed in to give some tone, and the spent cartridges picked out in Vallejo Brass
So they were all assembled and we're done and the final reveal is
here
Thanks as always to anyone who dropped by to see what was going on and especially to those who took the time to offer encouragement
