Recommendation for model clamps please

Post by RangerNeil »

Got a few pennies spare and I think I could do with some decent model clamps - steel toolmakers ones are quite good - but HEAVY!!! Anyone care to recommend a good make/type/source of sprung or ratchet clamp for polystyrene/resin parts please???

Every one will have there preferred method and type clamp wise but these are what I use-

Fold back clamps, made of metal so will last forever these come in different sizes so getting a pack with 4 or more sizes is a good idea. I generally use 19 to 32mm clips for most things

General modeling clamps, these also come in different sizes but beware the really cheap sets as they have a habit of breaking just behind the clamp neck. The two pump action clips are very handy too and I have several of this type now.

Last of all tape usually the masking type but any tape will do.

The links are there to give examples only so you know the type of clamp I use. :thumb2:

    Thanks folks.
Got a few of the fold-back ones too but I found on the plastic AModels use they marked the surface. That's why I dug out my old toolmakers clamps - ironically much heavier but the pressure is spread over a wider area and the grip pressure can be adjusted to the minimum required. Just ordered a set of Hawkmoons second recommendation so we'll see how they go.
    Thanks again all. :) :)

I use a mixture of locking C-clamps, Trigger clamps and ratchet hand clamps.

Thanks for all the extra info folks.

I am in a constant state of dog-house existence with the wife for nicking her wooden clothes pegs (pins to you ) as I found the plastic ones tend to get stuck to the model if any cement gets in the way.

Picked up on an old thread here.

Have a look at the cheap sets of clamps made by Rolson. Often found in general stores tool sections.

I have this set of C-clamps that I picked up at a craft store:

I also use these, that I found in the kitchenware section of a local hardware store:

As I only build in 1/72, I'm not sure how these would work for larger scales.
