Hello All,
My name is Martin and I am Canadian. I live in a remote part of the country approximately 200km north of Toronto. Most of my hobby shopping occurs on line. I have only been modeling for a few years and I am loving it. I have built a Polar lights Star Ship Enterprise from the latest series and the Revell Saturn 5 rocket (nightmare). On the workbench, I am about to start the Tamiya 1:32 Vought F4U-1 Corsair Birdcage. I hope I haven't bitten off too much.
Paul's build on youtube inspired me to tackle this build. I am new to airbrushing and just purchased a cheap airbrush kit to try out paint techniques.
Are there any videos for brand new airbrushers?
How do I know what primer to use?? Some people use grey, some use glossy black some use flat black etc. What is involved for this decision?
Advice is welcome.
Love the site, it's just amazing
Martin

Welcome friend

. We already have a few active Canadians on site if you didn't notice.....
There is a corsair being built here now and one more is more than welcome.
Cheap airbrush's can give less than reliable spray patterns, but sometimes they are good too. The most important thing with airbrushing is thinning your paint enough, but not too much and this will depend on what paint brand and type you buy.
If you scroll down the index page you will find entire sections devoted to paint and airbrushing.....

After you have your paint sorted a little bit of practice on some waste product will see you in good stead and get you going. Keep the brush moving so you don't pool paint and a brush with a 0.3mm needle is the workhorse and generally set your pressure anywhere ( depends on product) between 10 and 25.
Oh and high humidity will cause you problems.....,BUT they can be solved.
Got any questions, post them up and someone will answer.

Hi Martin, welcome. One thing primer will do is influence the colour of the final top coat. Darker primer = darker final coat. Lighter primer = a brighter finished look.
For instance I use white for a red car body to pop the saturation and intensity of the red finish. If I used black, the red would be much darker, less intense. This is my thinking for choosing primer colour. Testing will tell you how its going to look.

Hello Martin and

to the ISM forum.
When you get a moment please check out the forum guidelines which can be found --->
here
We'd love to see your work & progress but in order to post photos you will need to host them on an external site such as Flickr and then link to them from the forum. Unfortunately the forum currently doesn't have sufficient capacity or bandwidth to host directly uploaded photos.
There is a quick guide on how to use the Flickr integration on the forum --->
here and a couple of step by step guides in
here
As well as the forum boards there is a really useful Modeller Toolkit available which can help with paint matching, paint thinning, glue types & a scale calculator that can be found --->
here
We also run a number of group builds & special interest groups through the year so feel free to enter any of those that you like the look of - once they're set up they can be found --->
here
Otherwise take a look around and join in, and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Have fun!

Welcome to the forum
You'll love the Tamiya Corsair, its a stunning kit. The engineering is something else. I'm building it at the moment on the Large Scale Builds thread. I'm at the painting stage and have loved it so far.
