Supernatural: 1967 Impala “Baby”

Post by bfrd »

This one is a little different for a science fiction build, but it counts!

Image

Image

On April 21, 1967, the 100 millionth GM vehicle rolled off the line at the plant in Janesville – a blue two-door Caprice. There was a big ceremony, speeches. The lieutenant governor even showed up. Three days later, another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her. But they should have, because this 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important car – no, the most important object – in pretty much the whole universe.

Nope. Did it ever cross the bridge to UK TV? Is it available on Netflix or Prime or Paramount+ streaming services? Cos it sounds interesting!

Apropos of nothing there is a very funny story concerning the film "Christine", a Citroen DS, a darkened multi-story car park of the spiral ramp type and 4 girls. And some fish 'n chips.....

Saw the first two episodes - then the wife came home.... I enjoyed those two - although it reminds me of another series but I damned if I can remember what!! As yet, though, I can't work out whats so special about the car???

The car is a character in the show, almost as much as any of the people. It will play more of a key role later in series.

15 seasons? Not sure I can commit to a binge that large. I've seen bits of it here and there and it does look good though.

I am almost ready to start. I think I am going to do this mostly out of the box. The only modification I plan on making is in the trunk area. I picked up the following from Etsy.

              Image

A decent article in the Dec. 2020 issue of Fine Scale Modeller describes this modification. They used a trunk insert from the die-cast model, but I suspect using this will be similar. I will post more pictures once the trunk is cut out.

Here is a picture of the trunk for reference.

Must admit one of my first thoughts watching the series was - how do they explain the boot away if stopped by police?? :)

I started cutting the body for the trunk opening. I use a Tamiya scribing tool, but the plastic is quite thick.

                Image

After a decent amount of scribing and a little razor saw, I got the trunk lid out, but the cuts are rough.

                Image

Due to the thickness of the plastic and the number of passes, the kerf loss is higher than I had hoped. I am using some needle files to fix the tight, rounded corners. The next step will be banding the trunk lid to replace some kerf loss.

That’s good work, not easy either.

I made a little more progress on the trunk. It is slow going for a dope that has never done this before.

I got a piece of plasti-card and marked out the outline.

                Image

I also trimmed off the bracing from the bottom of the trunk lid.

                Image

I then added back a bit of plastic to replace the amount lost by the cut.

                Image

I cut out the opening of the trunk leaving a gap around the mark I made earlier. I also backed the face.

                Image

Then I was able to add the bracing back on.

                Image

Finally I added a band around the trunk.

                Image

I used Revell Contacta for all of this work as it creates a strong bond. I also added a bit of quick dry Tamiya for good measure. I will let all cure overnight before sanding it down smoothly.

The initial fit-up is not looking too bad!

                Image

**Note: I accidentally gouged the left side of the trunk lid, so it has an extra piece of plastic to fill the gap.

                This is excellent work.
Use of thin styrene for the kerf and the inner styrene supports the trunk :th:
It will look perfect; almost too good as the gaps on American cars, well…..
