Help and Tips for the painting of Tamiya's Panzer II F/G.

Post by coladito1 »

I am currently doing research for the Paint Scheme of this kit, I was thinking of making this thread on ISM with Help and suggestions about the painting and decaling on This particular kit. I figured we can all use the help since there's about 5 of us doing the same kit.

So far I know that the paint for the Afrika corps that I'm doing is desert Yellow. for Tamiya I think is called XF-59. For Vallejo I think is called "Sand Yellow". So If you know of the different brands of paint that we can use for this kit, Please feel free to suggest or help with the issue at hand since the instructions come all in Japanese.:

This also includes different theaters or schemes, so make sure if you suggest that you specify which theater/scheme you are referring to. Thanks!! :hi:

Alright, i will post some suggestions. The long useage of this tank on all kinds of theatres means that almost everything is possible.

Image
Thats a C version but i can image something similar for a F version aswell. The German grey - sand yellow camo pattern used in south Russia in late 1942 and early 1943 is very different from the stuff we usually see.

Image
Finally a F version, used in Stalingrad. It features the same colours as above (German grey - sand yellow) but the pattern is very different. All those camos were applied by the crew in the field, there were no certain rules they had to stick to.

Image
Another F version, this time the Afrika Korps camouflage. It is simply sand yellow. Some model builders get really mad on this and tell you there is only ONE right tone of sand yellow but seriously, i do not care at all about that.

Image
Also an Afrika Korps Panzer II F, Tunesia late 1942. It features an unusual camo pattern consisting of sand yellow and green.

Image
Typical for early German tanks, German grey over all. This is a F version, i assume somewhere in Russia 1942.

With regard to the F version thats it, the earlier variants like the A version also had a dark brown camo pattern over the German grey but i would not do that for a F version.

Luis, I found this helpful when choosing colours for my little build...

My build is north Africa 1941-42

http://www.panzerworld.com/german-armor-camouflage

I have decided on RAL8000 or RAL7008, it seems that in model air they are ..
RAL 8000 =71.030 green brown
RAL 7008 =71.024 khaki brown. Or the new colour 71.116 camouflage grey green.
RAL 8020 =71.117 camouflage brown again a new colour.
RAL 7027 =71.118 camouflage grey another of the new colour range.
RAL 7021 =71.056 panzer dark grey.

These seem to be the colours for this time in the war..

Hope this helps with the colour references you are trying to build in this thread.
:cheers2:

LOL once saw two guys almost get into a fist fight over what was the "proper colour" for Panzer Grey!   There we so many variations of it, some very light grey, some with a dark blue hue, IT DOESNT FREAKIN MATTER...same with Dunkelgelb (dark yellow) and Sandgelb (sand yellow)

...the photos were all black and white anyways... :D :D :D

Luis, I have been researching the same thing as my instructions came in Japaneese as well. What Ive found out so far and Im still doing exstensive research is the following:

Colors used were Yellow Brown, Dark Gray and Khaki Brown. This to me sounds more like the Luftwaffe colors unstead of the Afrika Corps colors but I know very little about it other then the reading Ive been doing in regards to this kit. I also read that doing the kit were doing we have to make the F version as its impossible to make a G version because the wrong rear suspension (something like that) isnt included in this kit.

Michael, I don't suppose you have any other aspect views of this particular paint job do you?

I would love to go for this for mine, but can't seem to find any other info on it anywhere!

Cheers

Unfortunately i don´t have pictures that show this camo scheme from a different direction.
Don´t go overboard mate, there were no certain rules how to apply the camo so i´d paint up the side you can see on the picture and than move along and continue it on the other sides in similar fashion. This should create a perfectly fine camo scheme.
