Planemaker's Birdcage!

Post by planemaker »

Greetings! My entry is a Tamiya 1/48 Chance Vought F4U-1 Birdcage Corsair. I'll be building it OOB for this time. Because, I wanted to build something easier then the Fine Molds Judy for the Rising Sun GB, that I sadly won't be able to finish, because, OK let me tell the story. :wall:
___________________________________
-After I primed and pre-shaded the Judy I put a coat of Mr. Metal Aluminium on the thing cause I wanted some chipping. I wanted to try a new method of chipping so I used some Vallejo Chipping Medium. BUT after I painted the underside I noticed that the dots of Vallejo chipping fluid I put on the model had gone thru all the layers of paint and primer when it should have just pulled away the top layer of paint to expose the aluminium colour underneath..... :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
:pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: :pistols:
-You don't wanna know how it looks now!
___________________________________

-Let's forget that and go back to the Corsair build!

History

The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Demand for the aircraft soon overwhelmed Vought's manufacturing capability, resulting in production by Goodyear and Brewster: Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models, in the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942–53).
Image
The Corsair was designed as a carrier-based aircraft. However its difficult carrier landing performance rendered the Corsair unsuitable for Navy use until the carrier landing issues were overcome when used by the British Fleet Air Arm. The Corsair thus came to and retained prominence in its area of greatest deployment: land based use by the U.S. Marines. The role of the dominant U.S. carrier based fighter in the second part of the war was thus filled by the Grumman F6F Hellcat, powered by the same Double Wasp engine first flown on the Corsair's first prototype in 1940. The Corsair served to a lesser degree in the U.S. Navy. As well as the U.S. and British use the Corsair was also used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the French Navy Aéronavale and other, smaller, air forces until the 1960s. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most formidable American fighter of World War II, and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio with the F4U Corsair.

After the carrier landing issues had been tackled it quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of World War II. The Corsair served almost exclusively as a fighter-bomber throughout the Korean War and during the French colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria.'

Image

F4U-1 (Corsair Mk I Fleet Air Arm): The first production version of the Corsair with the distinctive "bird cage" canopy and low seating position.[N 6] The differences over the XF4U-1 were as follows:
Six .50 in (12.7 mm) Browning AN/M2 machine guns were fitted in the outer wing panels, displacing fuel tanks.
An enlarged 237 gal (897 l) fuel tank was fitted ahead of the cockpit, in place of the fuselage armament. The cockpit was moved back by 32 in (810 mm).
The fuselage was lengthened by 1 ft 5 in (0.43 m).
The more powerful R-2800-8 Double Wasp was fitted.
150 pounds (68 kg) of armor plate was fitted to the cockpit and a 1.5 in (38 mm) bullet-resistant glass screen was fitted behind the curved windscreen.
IFF transponder equipment was fitted.
Curved transparent panels were incorporated into the fuselage behind the pilot's headrest.
The flaps were changed from deflector type to NACA slotted.
The span of the ailerons was increased while that of the flaps was decreased.
One 62 gal (234 l) auxiliary fuel cell (not a self-sealing type) was installed in each wing leading edge, just outboard of the guns.

A land-based version for the USMC, without the folding wing capability, was built by Goodyear under the designation FG-1. In Fleet Air Arm service the F4U-1 was given the service name Corsair Mk I. Vought also built a single F4U-1 two-seat trainer; the Navy showed no interest.

The Kit

I my opinion this is a good kit. It's got some nice detail here and there and the moulds are very crisp.
I'll be doing the first marking option, the VF-17 one aboard USS Bunker Hill.

Update #1

Some cockpit parts to be assembled...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Radiator flaps cut open as Nige201980 did on his Corsair build.
Image

More parts redy for primer...
Image

Parts of the interior and cockpit primed.
Image

And then sprayed in Vallejo Model Air Interior green.
Image

Some detail painting in the cockpit.
Image

I took some old decal sheets and cut out some left over instrument decals to make the IP look better.
The result was quite good. :)
Image

Some decals here too, but these are supplied in the kit.
Image

Chipping effects...
Image

Image

And lastly an oil wash after a clear cote. Gotta love the Mig oils!
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And then some Kristal Klear on the dials to get a lens effect.

Update #2

Thanks Heel!

Haven't really got time to post here in the past month, everyday life in the way as usual. But now when school's out in the summertime I've got more time for modelling, so will crack on now!

I added some leftover PE seatbelts from a Bf-109 and modified them a bit to look more like USN seatbelts.
Image

Then I assembled the two halves of the cockpit.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Fuselage halves glued together.
Image

Started some work on the engine.
Image

Image

After a glosscoat I started the weathering on the engine, first off a dark brown oilwash.
Image

Image

And then continued with more oils and pigments.
Image

Engine assembled.
Image

I made an oilwash in the landing-gear bays and some other parts.
Image

To last I made wireing in engine with some copperwire and painted it.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Here are the finished landing-gear bays.
Image

Engine and wing parts assembled.
Image

Engine mounted to the cowling.
Image

Image

More parts of the wing assembled.
Image

Engine and wings attatched to the fuselage.
Image

Image

Update #4

The painting stage has been a bit slow but my Corsair build is picking up speed at the moment. Only ten days left of the SiG, but I only got some weathering and a matt coat to do and this will be finished. :D

Pre-shaded using AKAN Black.-Great stuff!
Image

Image

Underside painted using Hakata Insignia White. -From the US Navy Late paint set.
Image

Image

Image

Hakata Intermediate Blue, slightly lightend mix.
Image

Image

Image

Then I suddenly stumbled across this pic:
Image

You can see that this is the particular Corsair I am building. You can also see that it has got another mast behind the cockpit,
luckily, this mast was supplied in the kit but the instructions never told to add it, so I added it anyway.
Image

I first masked up the outline of the upper colourwith blue-tac to make it easier to get a better coverage on the paint.
Image

After I sprayed the Hakata Semi Gloss Sea Blue on I then free-handed the edge between the semi gloss sea blue and the intermediate blue
to make a soft edge. This took many tries but now I am happy with it. :)
Image

Image

Underside unmasked.
Image

Some other bits'n bobs painted.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I decided to improve the pitot-tube a bit based on pictures I've seen.
Image

Image

Exhaust painted.
Image

Gloss-coated using Alclad Aqua Gloss.
Image

Image

Wing position lights painted.
Image

Image

Decaled. I had to fix some broken decals on two places, so I'll blame it all on the quality of the Tamiya decals. :bash: :shifty:
Image

Image

Exhaust attatched.
Image

Last update and final reveal next week. Stay tuned!

Thanks Nige!

I found the Hakata paints quite OK. I though had some problems getting the semi gloss sea blue to spray well enough to free-hand the soft edge
between the sea blue and intermediate blue. But I finally got it right using my H&S Infinity equipped with a 0.4 needle, one drop of Ultimate thinner
to about five drops of paint and the pressure at 25-30 psi.

Hope that helps!
Cheers! :cheers2:

I made the antenna wires using coloured fishing rod. I used masking tape to get the tension and CA to glue them to the antennas.

After the glue dried I cut off the excess and removed the tape.

I made the light or whatever it is under the wing using a piece of aluminium foil. The clear part was supplied in the kit.
