Tamiya Mosquito FB MkVI.' Wooden Wonder' 1/48 scale

Post by rodrant »

Hi ,

SO I was waiting from this to arrive so I can enter this SiG (Hope that I still participate...)

I would like to build this Mosquito in 1/48 from Tamiya in the version FB Mk VI.

Image

Will be using also this aftermarket stuff :

Image

Woodgrain decals from Ushi Van Der Rosten , some Masks , some Eduard Goodies for the cockpit and Canopy masks ...The rigging will use the adequate for 1/48 scale ...

My idea is to build a Mosquito but not in its Camo Scheme , all in wood and metal (where there was metal ) so that I called my build the 'Wooden Wonder' ...must be a little crazy to build something like this as to be honest I do not have a clue how to do this  , some Ushi's how to in their site , also there were already some other builders/Modellers that have done something similar with HE 162 , Mosquitoes and WW I Planes ...I try to do something different , but until the end of the SiG I must get out with something ...or not

It is with great pleasure that I participate in this SiG either for the host and for the subject ...who doesn't like the 'Wooden Wonder' aka 'the Mossie'

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

My pleasure Nigel to be on this SiG ! Thank for the comment :th:

Some update ...this is going slowly , not too much time to build actually ...

This is an uncommon build , so I must think first and see what to do next (actually not very strong on that :-) )

So for me a first one , to start a Plane build by the Engines Nacelles

Image

Image

Then fix them to the wings ...

Image

Landing Gear next and some strange color mixture by Tamiya , really I understand that we can't get every color in a range , but Tamiya like to mix paints , and the mosquito build is great at this ...you have some sort of a Red Brown for this depositis in the Landing Gear ( really do not know the use in the Mosquito , some Hydraulics ...really do not know , if somebody could elucidate me would be fine , I'm curious on that ...) and also for the inside of the Bomb Bay , Mix of colors for the cockpit and overall inside , it should be a cockpit green ...well not mix on this , will use Mr.Hobby set for USAF and RAF cockpit Set , guess it will be an adequate color ...

Image

Image

Use XF-16 for the aluminium parts...

Now I must start on the cockpit ...on this build my doubt is if I Join the wings and later make the coloring and decalling or do every thing separately ....if I check some restoration pictures , it would be better to do separately , so I will not follow exactly the steps of the instructions ...at least it would be easier to place the wooden decals and also to add the needed variation in hte wood types ...oh my ... I should make more simple stuff

Some time since I last take the Mosquito ...some builds in between for the Eye Spy Sig and 48 Hours builds arranged by Paul , but I took some time now ..

I joined the fuselages , wings and tail ...still as you remember I'm trying to use some wooden decals on this one and I really didn't thought that probably I should first do the pint and decalling on the wings before I joined them :-( , well always learning ...now Some finishing doing the canopy and go for primer and painting it in wood colors (or at least some wood like tones ) before placing the decals ...will see how iy will went but only some Holliday period , I will return to this mid September I hope :-)

Looking good so far, love the harnesses in the cockpit.

I've seen of these Mossies in the natural wood and metal finish. It was awesome. Looking forward to seeing yours Sir. Excellent stuff. :th:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Ok , change of plans here ...

Unfortunately , I can't finish the model in the natural wood finish , time messed with this build , I gave more attention to other GB's and SiG's , and also I make a wrong aproach to this build If I was to use that wood decals , still I have another Mossie , and will try another build during next year ...I hope !

Sorry to all of you that were following this build , but now the Mossie will be finished in its Camo Color scheme ! But I prefer to finish it like this , I do not have any Mosquito in my finished builds , and later will try the aproach to the wood decals , I think I must do first each wing before I glue them to the fuselage ...and I glue them ...also to do the wood variations in the fuselage would be better to do also without the wings ...but from my side no issues on that , I even like the color of the Mossie in it's Camo scheme !

So this weekend was the local Model exhibition here in Maia , near Oporto ...and a nice exhibit , interesting workshops , and beautifull dios and models for everybody taste :-), I Primed the Mosquito some days ago, with Tamiya Grey Primer :

Image

And today I use Tamiya acrylics to paint the color scheme , do it free hand :

Image

(sorry this picture is blurred )

nos a Gloss coat and decalling , and will try to finish it till end October , let's see , but now most of the work is done so I think I can manage that !

Last update before final reveal ...

Finish painting the rudders , bombs for the wings

Image

Must make some airbrush on the green on the nose

Image

Ready for Gloss Coat and decalling

Image

Image

Image

Gloss Coat :

Image

Shinny ...

Image

Decals ...no big issues , but really Tamiya make such nice kits , why they do not have nice decals ...

They go with the help of Mr.Mark Softner ...make wonders on Tamiya decals

Image

Image

Image

Some new Gloss coat and some Ultimate Dark Dirt wash ...still the old version :-)

Image

Image

Then clean the wash and make a Flat Coat , I like the Flat finish , but then some strange stuff happen , After the clean of the wash I decided to use some AK querosene and stain wash in the fuel hatches , really think it was from that as I never had issues before , I have some sort of Crack in the paint , and the wings become like if they have been damaged ...never happened before and I'm upset , as this ruin all the work :-( , but hey I have the idea to build another as it is a great looking plane and after in the base that I prepared for the reveal it is ok , and looks very nice in the shelf !

I couldn't take better pictures of what happened , but here it is :

Image

Image

also had some issues in the canopy and in the nose paint ...maybe ...and could be a mistake on using two different brands of Coat , used the Mr Hobby Gloss and Tamiya Flat ...in future will use all of the same brand , do not really know why this happened !

A word to Nigel that hosted this SiG , sorry for not have followed my initial plan , but really I make an initial mistake in the build and I must do it another n another way in the future so that I could do a wooden Mosquito , still thank you for the opportunity to make such a beautiful plane ! One of my favourites !

so now will post the Final reveal here :

Wouldn't let a few paint cracks bother you, I've had worse than that! Can't you make them into 'weathering' somehow?
