1/72 Tamiya P-51D

Post by Lysus »

Before we get started, two things:

1) I have two projects ahead of this one, the "Wheelie Good" and the "Egg Plane" (since it ends in 30 days); and

2) I have never in my life attempted NMF.

I wanted to throw my hat in the ring in part to keep me motivated to try NMF. One of my top 5 planes ever, the P-51:

Image

Nothing fancy, and nothing easy to see. I suspect this kit may provoke an OptiVisor puchase...

Image

So once those other two are off the bench and on the shelf, I'll get started. In the mean time, if anyone has some tips or vids they like for doing a metal finish, feel free to comment. Otherwise, for anyone else who has never tried it, you can watch me stumble my way through this. No funny stuff for me on this one, just a straight up build :)

So while I wait for some wash to dry, and unable to proceed on the car build unless I want to set up the booth (which I don't right now) I thought I'd at least get my runner shot out of the way since this build is up next for me.

Image

After the last few builds with a hundred runners, this almost seems comically cute. It's also tiny, so challenge is still present and accounted for. Maybe a 1:48 wouldn't have been such a bad idea  There's decals for two liveries:

Image

There's already a pretty stunning Petie 2nd build up, so for a moment I considered doing the second version. Then I decided to go a different route. Since this will be my first NMF, why not show it off? So I think I'll try my first vignette/diorama with the 51 having just rolled off the line with almost no paint at all. We'll see...

Build should commence within the next 7-10 days!

Normally I'd agree with you, but he's got a brilliant Bugatti build going and for selfish reasons I want to see it done first ;)

Thanks for the kind words, gents. I'm planning on getting the cockpit built tomorrow, I'll drop a note in the Weekend Goals post once I get a handle on my time resources this weekend.

Some progress made today!

I got the cockpit painted up along with some other bits like the struts and wheels.

Image

The cockpit was done as indicated with Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black. However, in my sleep deprived state I read XF-10 as X-10 and sprayed the front half in X-10 Gunmetal. I thought it odd but pressed on, and now I get to coat that over with some XF-10 Flat BROWN...ugh. Oh well, shouldn't be too bad and as far as mistakes go it's hardly the worst I've made so far. I'll let that go overnight then deal with it later this week.

Also free hand airbrushed with the HP-CS some flat black on bits of the cockpit you can't see in this pic; nothing amazing here, I just was so happy with how it was easy to control that I needed to tell someone.

The interior fuselage and some of the metal trim bits were done with Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow and XF-5 Flat Green at 2:1 (more or less...the amounts needed didn't warrant using a pipette or syringe for measuring so I eyeballed it) and XF-1. From there I hairbrushed it. The control panel was also XF-1 Flat Black with X-1 Gloss Black for the dials and the XF-3/XF-5 mix for the pedals. (Sorry I don't have a close-up yet, I just found our old Canon Power Shot camera and if it still works I'll try some snaps...the cell phone would never register it with any clarity anyway) The seat back and part of the control stick (which has THREE colors on it...cripes! It's thick as a single horse hair...) were done in XF-62 Olive Drab.

Image

The struts were done with a mix of flat aluminum and chrome, but I'm not too happy with the way the Tamiya paint looks on them. It's hard to tell the difference for one, and for two they just don't look metal enough. They don't go on until the end, so maybe I'll try and pick up something more metal-like. The problem is they're tiny, so it can't be anything that needs buffing. We'll see.

The color call out for the tires is for XF-1, but I used XF-85 Rubber Black instead because why wouldn't you? Weird, Tamiya, weird. Along with the struts, the wheels themselves will probably be done over in something other than the XF-16 Flat Aluminum. It looks barf.

Maybe if the gods of styrene are happy with me I'll get a little time to assemble it all (and correct that X/XF SNAFU) tonight, but I'm not holding my breath.

Final note, I figured out the livery I'll do, but that'll wait for another time.

A little free time this afternoon means work on the 51! Got the control panel dials painted with some simple Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black per the instructions. Of course I deleted a shot that was clear and kept the one that wasn't, sorry:

Image

Thought I'd try the drybrushing technique with Tamiya X-11. I think I went a little heavy with it, but it was my first time trying this and the surface is soooo tiny:

Image

Image

Before assembling the fuselage, as per Paul's 109 video that brought me to ISM in the first place, I hit the inside of the cockpit with a heavily thinned XF-1 Black to accent the details (about 80% thinner--enough so it looked like ink). I also hit the vent here since it wouldn't be spotless even after a single flight:

Image

A dry fit. Almost didn't need glue it holds together pretty well, but of course it will need gluing if I want it to stay that way ;)

Image

Fuselage glueed up. Tamiya Extra Thin (TET) was all that was needed. Note the 1/24 shell for my GTi build for an idea of how big, er, small, the plane is. Barely 5 inches long...

Image

There's some unfortunate gapping here (the top vent; the opening around the radiator below gets another part that will conceal this. I hope). I'll dollop in some Mr. Dissolved Putty and come back with a fine file if I can, just to see if I can level this up a bit.

Image

As good as the fit was, it's not perfect. Using the putty I can spread it on and then wipe off the excess with a Tamiya pointed cotton bud leaving only the seam. I left the blobs on the left and center so you can see before and after. Can't dilly dally, though, it sets up pretty quickly. The drawback of the Mr. Dissolved Putty is that it contracts a bit as it sets meaning if you have wide gaps you'll need to lay down layers atop cured layers to fill it. It also stinks.

Image

Wings! One wing snapped in perfectly, the other had a wide gap that needed to be forced into place with some regular Tamiya Cement and a Berna Clamp:

Image

Tailerons ... on. I spent probably too much time worrying these to get them to line up just right...as a result some TET goo oozed up at the seams a bit. So that should be fun to clean up. I also only realized while typing this up that I forgot to add the seat belt decals  We'll see if that can be done another night.

Thanks dude! If I can ever get past this filling and sanding stage I might get it finished ;) I mean, it's a Tamiya so it's pretty good fitting-wise, it's just so small that tiny issues require huge efforts

Re: 1/72 Tamiya P-51D

Post by Lysus »

Oh sweet bench time, how I missed thee.

Busy day, I focused on the P-51 mostly and got quite a bit done. I started with masking the canopy. Prior to this I soaked it in some Future that I finally sourced up. It came out nice and clear, and then it sat under a plastic lid for a month while I got all super busy :x It took me three tries to get the tape cut the way I wanted, and I really hope I didn't scar the canopy beneath it. We'll see at the end, eh?

For whatever reason the horizontal stabilizers both torqued up a bit; they should both be 90 degrees to the vertical, but for some reason one of them was 85 and the other like 80  After some time with a little more TET to loosen them and some force, I got them closer to 90, but not all the way. I might have been a bit timid--I really didn't want to snap them off in such a way that the contact surface would be damaged or the wing bent.

Image

Next the collar for the canopy and the canopy itself went on. The frame, or collar, or whatever, really did not want to fit perfectly. It was molded a bit too narrowly to fit the air frame, I had to try to spread it open while it set. I couldn't find the canopy glue I wanted at either of my go-to LHSs, so I grabbed what they did have, some Testors Clear Parts Cement:

Image

Primed in Stynylrez:

Image

After looking at some photos of the subject I'm going for, the control surface on the tail is a slightly flatter color, so I thought I'd mask that off completely from the metal color--there's just primer under the tape. As I've never done NMF before, I just picked a brand and went for it; I used them according to the manufacturer recommendations. In this case, the paint is AK Extreme Metal ordered from Hobbyworld-USA (along with the cleaner). First comes the black base:

Image

It went on ok, though it seemed to be a little spotty. This could be a problem with my airbrush--I hadn't used in in over three weeks so I gave it a good strip down clean and I think something isn't quite right, the pressure out the tip seems low. Probably jammed the needle a bit too far forward. Anyway..

I masked off the elevators on the wings and a couple panels on each wing surface for a slightly different shade of metal. First up is AK Extreme Metal Polished Aluminum:

Image

It scared the piss out of me going on. When it comes out, it looks runny and oily and separated, but that goes away in seconds. Literally. Within 2-3 seconds it starts to level and set up as a very nice metal color. There's also the issue of learning how far from the surface I should be spraying for this paint, and it turns out that's a little bit closer than with acrylics. Slow passes and don't linger, let a misty layer go on first and once you've covered the whole thing, come back and finish it off with a heavier layer. It is actually very forgiving, if you flood a section it sorts itself out--mostly--though a little air on the blob will erase your mistake in seconds. I'm quite pleased with the stuff.

It also stinks. A lot. Use your mask. (Which you always do anyway, right?)

Oh, and it was also at this point that it occurred to me that I don't think I painted the crossbar on the canopy collar. Sweet. I hope primer grey looks good in there... :wall:

Image

I didn't get any good pics of the second color, regular Aluminum, since I was moving along at a good clip today. I didn't want something too drastically different, but I think maybe I should have. The differences are hard to see in some lighting, but they're clear in others. I actually think I prefer the regular aluminum to the polished aluminum, and maybe a color combo a little more different from one another might have been better. Oh well. Next plane I do maybe I'll swap the two.

Lastly, the panels around the exhausts should be a stainless steel. I realized this after I ordered the AK paints, so I just grabbed some Alclad Stainless Steel (ALC 115) from my friendly LHS.

Image

On to the livery. I decided a few weeks back to discard the two options in the kit and go for a Tuskegee Airman livery since it shows off the metal well and I like the red and silver contrast. I found some decals online from...damn I forgot the seller's name...I'll dig it up for next update. He was awesome and I'd like to give him the shout out to my North American modelers here to look up if they need some decals. The set made by LPS Hobby:

Image

I'll be going for 31 "Dearly Beloved" flown by 1st Lt Earl R. Lane. Mainly because that's the only D option. Note that if you get the set from this manufacturer for 1/48 you get two D options and two B/C (I think, maybe it was only one for B/C).

Image

So that's day one of my "bachelor" weekend done. Tomorrow morning will be pancakes, bacon, and masking for the red and yellow. And then...DECALS! My favorite.

Rather than deal with the airbrush problem right away, I thought I'd at least get the yellow stripes on the wings down and then strip the airbrush. Sadly, not only did it barely aerosolize (?) the paint, it misted little yellow flecks EVERYWHERE. Despite what I thought was adequate masking, the base color was ruined. So, accent color masked, back to base color we go...

Image

I'm a little ticked at myself for not taking care of the problem (which yes, was just a stupid needle seating mistake) and now losing an afternoon of work. Double ticked because I'm pretty sure in my silent rage I think I dug some furrows into the wing cutting the masking. Grumble. Oh well, lesson learned there. An important one. Just wish I could have learned it on a non-GB/SiG build

Onward... :hi:

Heh, yeah that got sorted within the day. May was a stupidly busy month for me, but I've been pushing along on this one all week but haven't been good about the updating

Thanks! It's been a bit of a struggle, to be honest.

I've masked and sprayed the red bits (I do believe I should have laid down a layer of flat white first, the red did NOT want to go on well--it took three layers; 1 misty, two heavier) and it's now masked and ready for the olive drab anti-glare strip. Greebles are ready for color (if they haven't got any already) and the spinner and props are nearly done!

Image

Sorry I haven't kept up on the photos for the steps, I got a little focused on finishing it. If you've been around the hangouts this week, you might have heard me softly cursing this project...I'm enjoying it, but it's been a struggle to keep the finish up on the NMF while I work on it. I'll probably have to mask AGAIN to touch up some of the metal color, and I've managed to dig ruts into the plastic during one reckless masking session :wall:

Ah well, it's a great exercise. It has taught me one thing: when building WWII aircraft, get 1:48!

I need to mask it all up and get a final (?) coat of aluminum on. You'll note some red found its way onto the fuselage where it shouldn't be. I really want it to be the last time...lots to do still.

Right, got the aluminum fixed...again...

Image

Image

I did notice that the olive drab bit is a little lopsided--I came in a bit tight near the nose on the right side (as you look at it). I might try and fix this, even it out a tad, but time is drawing near an end for this. I only have one good weekend before time is up, so we'll see. Also lost some yellow underneath the wings, not sure if I'll fix that or not. We'll see, I need to get this thing glossed and decalled before long. Oh and the drop tanks.

Got the wheel wells greened up with 2:1 Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow and XF-5 Flat Green per the instructions.

Ugh, so my schedule has been brutal following my vacation and the completion of this tiny plane is in jeopardy. Among the to-do list remaining were drop tanks, a little pitot, and fixing the olive drab strip and the yellow stripes. If I'm to finish on time, I need to gloss coat this plane so I can apply decals and a wash over the next couple nights. Sadly I discovered that the drop tank connectors require that you drill holes in the wings. Yeah, there's no holes in place already.

So no drop tanks. I'm Sure Stokesy44 will come for my head, but I just can't bring myself to drill and glue and then fix the finish AGAIN and still make the deadline.

One yellow stripe seems to be wonky, but again I can't fix that without adding days to my build unless I stay home from work/school. So that's not an option. Same goes for evening up the olive drab anti-glare strip.

Sad. But hey, this build was a learning experience for me from the start, and I've enjoyed it enough that I'm already planning a 1/48 version down the road with the same paint scheme. A revenge build, if you will.

Anywho, the build. I popped on the exhausts and the spinner for gloss coating. Again, the blades could do with some more finesse, but no time. I hoped the exhausts would look a little more dirty, but they seem unpainted now, somehow, despite being sprayed with the exact same Alclad stainless steel as the panel that surrounds them. Odd.

I did forego the red decals in the aftermarket Tuskegee decal sheet since I didn't think I could match the reds up perfectly and masked the nose pattern by hand. Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black was added to the tail flaps as indicated on the instructions for "Dearly Beloved."

Well, she's glossed now. Next up will be decals, a coat to seal them, and some dark dirt wash. I might not, just because I like it so bright and shiny, but I also want to see what happens so curiosity wins out here.

Hopefully I'll make it in under the wire!

So good news; I've been home the last two days! Bad news, it's because I'm enjoying a nasty flu. So this probably won't happen tonight. Sad.

Well, the time is up, but I refuse to stop work on this little guy. Good luck to the finishers!

Got on with the decals:

I used the ones from the aftermarket set and not the Tamiya set since they wouldn't be right for the plane anyway. There's zillions of tiny, illegible ones yet to put on, and I was about to call it done, but then I thought it's not too late to go ahead and put them ALL on. Since time is no longer a consideration, I may just do that. The drop tanks, though, no. I won't muck up the gloss coats and metal surface with a gluing mishap at this point. So they're no going on. When I come back in a year or so (maybe less!) with a 1/48 P-51, I won't forget them.

Anyway, so yeah. Some 30 odd tiny decals left to do, then some dark dirt wash, then a matte coat. Hooray!

Oh yeah, and wheels. I won't forget the wheels

I was gonna have my critique of the kit once done, but I have to say for something so tiny it's really well detailed and but for one or two minor spots of headache it practically builds itself. Really, really well done little kit from Tamiya.

Edit: Also, thanks! I may have been slow, but I'm trying :)

By no means perfect, but I'm calling it done. Soon as I figure out how to use my photobooth (as in, I need to practice with it a bit, but I'm lazy) I'll leave some reveals in the Air gallery.

I did give it a bath in some Ultimate Dark Dirt:

Image

Image

First time ever doing that, so that was fun :)

Cleaned it up, Dullcote on for a matte coat, and finally unmasked the canopy.

Sadly I lost a bit of trim on the canopy, there was some paint build up around the canopy mask from the many resprays, and the Tamiya red darkened up way more than I was expecting...I think next time I'll remember to put a base of white under it or just use a different brand >.<

Anywho:

Have seen you working on this in one of the off-air hangouts. Nice to see some photo's as the webcam didn't do it justice.

As always happy modeling and keep sticking styrene.

Thanks fellas. :cheers2: Believe me when I say that means a lot to me coming from you all since I spend so much time drooling over your works.

I definitely want to do this bird again in the same colors, but 1/48 next time.

Great finish Lysus!

I have this kit in my stash, hopefully I can do a job similar to yours anything even remotely close and I'd be happy.

Thanks, dude! I really enjoyed doing it, and not to sound like a broken record, but I'm definitely going to grab a 1/48 and do this scheme again. :cheers2:
