ok doing some work on this but not got very far , its the eyes , the eyes on this bust are uneven , he has a squint in one eye as intended by the sculpter (his right eye) and his left eye the actual eye ball is a bit lumpy and not round in shape i think its a casting fault maybe, most likely i just got unlucky with this one but even on the box art the eyes are squiffy and look a bit odd

first attempt as you can see the odd shape to the eye making it very difficult to get even

second attempt

at this point i decided to carry on but i knew these eyes would need fixing as you rotate the head they look ok at one angle but look pissed from another angle, decided to press on and started adding flesh tones, the colours i use for flesh are vallejo model color and i use series 7 brushes from winsor & newton, 000 - 00 - 3 (cant stress how important it is to have good brushes )

light flesh

then beige red in very thin coats but not too wet on the brush that you get pools of paint in the creases so leach out some liquid from the brush on the side of the pallet before touching the face , and add some shadow to the areas in shade with mahogany , hold the head under a light source to get an idea where the natural shade should be , helps a lot

so thats the first of many stages of the face painting and all the time the eyes bugged me so i bit the bullet and blacked out the colour of the iris and tried to fix them by starting the iris and pupil again , decided the eyes will have to be brown , the reason is simple with a blue iris the eye is drawn to the pupil area, with a brown iris as they are darker the eye is only drawn to the iris area this helps you to achieve a pair of eyes that dont look wonky because you focus less on the pupil in a brown eye , this is where ive got to so far ill refine the eyes a bit tomorrow as ive had enough of it today

OK STOP , cant cope with the wonky eyes so i stripped the head right back and have started again , lost count on how many attempts at the eyes , so i have stripped re primed and done the eyes yet again and a base layer of beige red, I think im happy with them now , not sure i can really improve on it only other option is some decal ones but i see that as a bit of a cop out , although id never rule it out lol either way im leaving them now will leave it for today then get on with face painting tomorrow

nice job so far, mate ;)

I have the same problem with eyes, always the right eye is a problem, maybe because of the nose as an obstacle.. I sometimes try to paint upside down
