Tamiya Tamiya Tamiya Italeri??? Phantom

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Gotta get my thread up here fast, they are going up like crazy
Pretty pedestrian Phantom 1/72nd from the stash
Image

This will be my hardest build EVER as I am a self admitted muti-modificating-scratch-building so and so. I may need a referee and a panel of judges to rule over me. I was planning on a Tamiya 1/20 Lancia Stratos Turbo, but there is no way in heck I am doing that OOB, got too much PE and aftermarket to let it go to waste.

I like mr Lysus' challenge of using ONLY TAMIYA PRODUCTS to build the kit as well and will follow along with that:
Tamiya paint, thinners, cement, sanders, paint brushes and sprue cutters.
My time is crazy right now and I have entered more ISM builds at the same time than ever before and hopefully move into a new house late October
My head may actually :boom: at some point during the build from all the stress
Should be fun to watch ;)

Excellent, as I said in the other Phantom thread, we can never have too many. Maybe if you do join in the "Lysus" challenge it'll help curb your scratch build itch ;)

Yes, that was what I was thinking too...keep my head and hands busy looking through drawers for Tamiya tools instead of making brass landing gears and such

I didnt even know tamiya did a phantom in 1/72 scott, it's somehow snuck under the radar ! This may help you relax a bit from your huge 1/1 super build :thumb1:

It is a rebox of an Italeri...can see from the made in Italy on the box. I knew that from my experience with a Huey chopper I did a while ago. It was ok to build so I hope this will be the same.
Still gonna do the Lysus Challenge and keep everything I use on it Tamiya

Did a little retail therapy today at LHS....got as much Tamiya as they had
Stocked up my paint supply, found some brushes, a paint pen for pre shading and then other stuff I already had.
This is the paint scheme version I am going to make or at least as close as I can get

Time-wise we are 7 hrs behind you guys.Currently renting about 2kms or less away just a bit farther south.
Do lots of drive by visits in am and pm to check on things. Can work on a weekend and pop back for lunch or pick up what I forgot. Also same route back from work so I usually stop by.

I have started the cockpit out
Have already voided my all Tamiya products by using Mr Surfacer on the seats...who the heck has a seam down the middle of a seat?? I hate the white Tamiya putty, so went to Mr Hobby, so ashamed
But I did use TET. Little lightheaded from all those fumes

It is kind of freeing to do a build oob with no pressure for extra doodads and such.
Problem is the kit has to be up to snuff as well...and this one is barely snuff-able or maybe it should be snuffed out. One of two. Just realized no pilots in the kit....that sucks too b/c I cannot add them

It will be fine. I am expecting those fit issues, so will deal with them as they come.
Getting the tips beforehand help a lot :thumb2:

I have been looking at wing and fuselage fittage and it will be interesting
I see why the plane builders buy so much aftermarket stuff, maybe I should have done an F1 or bike
It is killing me not to have any seat belts in the cockpit or pilots for that matter

A friendly Spook warned me about the wing to fuselage fit, so I am taking precautions.....thanks for that bud, you were dead on :thumb2:
I would probably add thin styrene, but thought that might be scratch building, so Bondo putty.
Added increments to wing internal and press moulded them to a damp fuselage so as not to stick to it.
That way it takes the shape needed to close the gap. When I am happy, I will add thin Ca over the bond to seal and strengthen.
Here we have the RHS fitting pretty well and the LHS needing smoothing.
They call this the "Salt and Pepper" method in dentistry to sneak up on a tight fitting provisional crown with acrylic...ooohh I could have used dental acrylic, darn. Will try that next time.
Image

Got a bit farther than my cockpit goal for the weekend, so pretty happy.
Managed to mangle the seats and the ejector handles with the masking, so took the handles off for now

Pretty boring thread really what with all the putty work and less than spectacular kit

Key observant words there: "EVERY MAJOR JOINT"....and some minor ones too  :bash:
The kit is truly a putty pig

Putty pig is my new favorite phrase.

I think I like the bigger tiles better. :th:

Oh for sure on the bigger tiles definitely :thumb2:
I had some other euphemisms for it than putty pig, but they are not safe in public
Getting happier with aircraft's shape since I put the nose on...got those wicked angles to it now

Moving to the 747 build so I can finish it off for October...did some fire/ smoke staining in all the windows

Poorly, John, I sand it poorly

Ha ha yes it is tough there those 90 degrees.I am long from finished with them and then re-scribing details I destroy.
What I use is 3M Bondo and I took a Q tip (not a cotton bud, never use those nasty things) dipped in lacquer thinner and rubbed the begeusus out of the Bondo until it conformed to the line and took way excess. I saw mr Patterson do the same with Mr Surfacer in one of his videos, but I like the Bondo as is bit thicker and easier to manipulate.
For the sanding I have been using Ultimate's sanding sticks with tape over raised details so as not to destroy it all. Then wet sandpaper with a thin wooden 90 degree stick inside to press into the joint
Hope that is clear as mud for you ;)
