wookiees porsche 911 gt.

Post by wookiee76 »

I finally figured out what to build, the two things I need most practice at are gloss paint work and decals so inspired by a combination of idiocy and memories of having the 1/10 rc version i chose this little beast.

Lol, started putting the wing on the shell, filler city already! Moulds are marked 1996 which to me seems fairly new until i think it's 20 years ago!

Having seen some other car builds of late where it seems that most people complete the shell before starting on the rest of the kit i thought i would follow suit. Mould seam lines over the front wings and rear end removed then the shell given a light keying with a fine grit sander, next up was the rear wing which suffered from some gaps between the two lower parts, holes where the main plane attaches and a fairly sizable gap/step at the front. Larger gaps were filled with squadron green putty thinned with cellulose thinner, the two small holes on either end fence were filled with vallejo filler and all of these were then sanded flush.
Next up is a coat of black ultimate primer which will be sanded back to get as smooth a finish as possible before coating that with tamiya x1thinned 50/50 with mr hobby levelling thinner.

Whilst waiting for the primer to cure i decided to start masking up the wheels, the centre spoke section is meant to be gold, cue masking hell! Using my old set of compasses i set them to the diameter of the area of the wheel to remain chrome and carefully traced and cut out hoops of tape the correct size and then using some 2mm tape i managed to mask the inner face of the wheels, took quite a while but should hopefully be worth it.
Oh, almost forgot i used a fibreglass pen to rough up the areas to be painted first to give the paint a chance of sticking.

Thanks Ian, primer cured and given a light rubdown to get rid of any texture i shot a couple of coats of xf1 thinned 50/50 with mlt, nice and shiny but a little orange peel which i expected so time to break out the micromesh sanding pads and Ultimate buffer, this will kill the shine but the objective here is to get as smooth a finish as possible.
Also of note i bodged up a mount from my block of florists foam and cocktail sticks so that I don't have to touch the shell whilst painting or letting dry.

Managed to buff out any remaining texture from the paint using a Ultimate buffer then gave it a polish with novus polishing compound before makimg a brave start on the decals, so far so good!

Really taking my time with this build, decals are progressing well and I'm actually quite happy with them, a few little issues to sort but nothing a quick jab with a pin and some more microsol won't cure, being on a super smooth surface is helping a great deal.
Underside chassis work is almost complete, absolutely no remarks to be made over parts quality and fit, paint is a combination of tamiya, Ultimate primer, citadel for the primary colours and mr hobby super metallics for, well duh! Has to be said that the wheels were an absolute pig to mask but benefitted again from a slower and more methodical ermm, method?
Any questions or pointers again don't be afraid to ask or point out, time to stop waffling and leave you with some pretty pictures.

Finally finished applying the decals to the shell, they responded well to the microset/sol and behaved themselves, also finished off the interior only thing i don't like are the seatbelt decals, given the choice i would have got some aftermarket ones but I'm being a good boy for a change!

Next up is the clear coat for the shell and a whole bunch more sanding and polishing, no room for mistakes now though, gulp.

So far looks like a trophy winner , when do you paint the inside of the shell , and do you mask over windows so no interior paint gets on the outside of the body ?
On the bench : Eduard Nieuport 17 in 1/48
Monogram Aston Martin DB4 James Bond look a like
Tamiya Ferrari F50 in 1/24 for GB

One heck of a mess

How on earth do you guys make this hobby look so easy ??? :wall:

The interior of the shell won't be visible when complete except for the underside of the roof so it won't actually get painted otherwise i would have painted it first, windows will go in once the rest of the shell is finished.

Started the clear gloss, after advice from Paul i started out slow and gentle to avoid the mr hobby levelling thinner melting the decals, this is a 50/50 mix with tamiya x22 clear, will be going for 5 or 6 coats just to make sure that when i polish it up i don't cut through to the decals.

This is after the second coat, third is drying as i type.

With as many layers of gloss sprayed as i dare/ could manage without going nuts, it was time to start polishing the bodyshell, a combination of micromesh pads from 4000 grit up and an Ultimate buffer along with novus polishing compounds are bringing a really nice finish to bear.

A little more buffing and it all starts to come together with rapidity, so far no major mess ups!
