Poorly, John, I sand it poorly

Ha ha yes it is tough there those 90 degrees.I am long from finished with them and then re-scribing details I destroy.
What I use is 3M Bondo and I took a Q tip (not a cotton bud, never use those nasty things) dipped in lacquer thinner and rubbed the begeusus out of the Bondo until it conformed to the line and took way excess. I saw mr Patterson do the same with Mr Surfacer in one of his videos, but I like the Bondo as is bit thicker and easier to manipulate.
For the sanding I have been using Ultimate's sanding sticks with tape over raised details so as not to destroy it all. Then wet sandpaper with a thin wooden 90 degree stick inside to press into the joint
Hope that is clear as mud for you ;)
it's a bit of a worry that i understood every word  what is bondo ? I've heard it mentioned many times but have no idea what it's like !
The phantom is coming along well though :thumb1: like you said before we dont see the pain you go through to get it to each stage 8-)

Bondo is a product name for a 3M putty. It is used in the automotive industry in North America

Looking good Scott. You wouldn't believe how many times I threatened to take a hammer to mine but it's worth it in the end.
It looks like you've used almost a tube of putty so you should be just about done. :ooops:

Yip this stuff is great. I also have in my box of tricks a bottle of melted spru in tamiya Xtra think. When my old glue bottle was down low I chopped up some spru into tiny pieces and chucked them in the glue. You get a jar of molten plastic and it sets fast and hard.

Good luck with rest of build buddy

Moving this Phantom along in tandem with the other Phantom sig where I am making a Thunderbird
She is all primed up and I have the paint scheme and all the paints organized, just gotta do some taping up
Here is her underbelly

And I will get a topside photo
Ok here we go, the OOB instruction sheet legal paint scheme

The sharkmouth in the background is what I would like to do, but alas that would be kitbashing

Re-studying the paint scheme I am surprised that the bands of colour don't wrap around the aircraft from top to bottom??!!
For example, the dark blue on topside of left wing tip has light grey on the underside.

Makes a bigger challenge for taping and painting

The right side and plan view of the green doesnt seem to match up ? On the side view it shows the full leading edge up to the wing root as green but the plan view only shows the green quite a bit away from the wing root ?

Or am i reading it wrong ? I have to say scott, i really like the colour scheme with the sharkmouth although very tricky to mask !

Ya, I am seeing the same as you John, something is a miss in the photos.... or I am reading it wrong???
To me, it seems the topside and underside photos do not have paint flow together, rather mirror image each other
That is why I posted the pic, just makes my brain hurt when I look at the photo and try to plan the tape up

I airbrushed the main belly tank tonight.
The Tamiya Xf-50 is a beautiful flat blue and lays down sweet... 12 drops paint:14 drops X-20

I am starting to get my stride with mixing right in the cup, a quick clean up and actually enjoying airbrushing

Yeah, same here scott. Building these aircraft had me looking for a faster method and the quick clean up because of the vast amount of colors with colour changes on the airbrush :thumb1:

Usually when you think you get the hang of something disaster strikes the next time...kind of like a good round of golf, you are toast on the next round

I have decided to do my paint scheme wrap around this model despite the a centric instruction plan.
As Wise John pointed out "where do you put a finish line??!!" To me it is far more logical to have the lines wrap top to bottom and blend.

Curse of the overconfident airbrusher comes true.
The airbrush had no pressure tonight, spluttered and fluttered and I could not get it sounding right.
After cleaning out paint from two brushes that I tried to use, I pulled apart the quick disconnect and found that the pressure was fine with direct connecting the line to the airbrush. Then I found a GD little ball of styrofoam jammed inside the quick connect....likely from the packaging box. How it got there and why now it shows up???:

I think so, the trick is blending the fix into the previous layer...that's where I always screw it up. Scott's a determined modeler, though.

Seems like I always have bleeders or errant puffs.

ETA: If you can't there's always chipping/weathering ;)

Ya, I will put up a pic of where I am at, having fine sanded out the puffs
Bleeds mid wing both sides, nice.

Very tempted to not airbrush these again...remember that mopping gif you put up a while ago???

I can see the issue with panel lines and weathering since these flat paints will suck up stain like maniacs.
So I will touch up paint, clear, panel line, weather and then flat coat

Researching again and it shows me that the 301 Navy reserve unit aka "The Devil's Disciples" did have that weird paint scheme top to bottom. Found some good photographs of real and modelled F4's

Image
From Wikipedia:
VF-301 was activated on 1 October 1970 and assigned to Carrier Air Wing Reserve 30 (CVWR-30) (tail code "ND") at Naval Air Station Miramar, California (USA).
The squadron first flew the F-8L Crusader and later transitioned to the F-4B Phantom in 1974. Their time with the B-models was short and VF-301 soon received the F-4N in February 1975. In 1980, VF-301 received the most advanced F-4 variant in the U.S. Navy, the F-4S. In October 1984 the unit transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat. The squadron made its first deployment with the F-14A on 21 April 1985, with five aircraft visiting MCAS Yuma, Arizona for air-to-air training against U.S. Marine Corps F-21A Kfir fighters of Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401). At this time, the squadron was still transitioning to the F-14 and it was not until 4 August the same year the entire squadron was able to deploy to NAS Fallon, Nevada for air wing training.

The Devil's Disciples first carrier landings were on board the USS Ranger. Further carrier training was limited but did include time on board the USS Enterprise between 10 and 22 August 1988. Later in its life the squadron became the first Naval Air Reserve squadron to drop air-to-ground ordnance, specifically Mk 84 bombs and Mk 20 cluster munitions.

After 24 years of service VF-301 was disestablished on 11 September 1994, the same time as sister squadron VF-302, due to post-Cold War budget cuts where the Navy opted to sacrifice Reserve F-14 squadrons to keep Regular Navy F-14 squadrons operating. Deactivation of the rest of CVWR-30 was soon to follow. During these 24 years VF-301 had acquired an outstanding safety record, flying 71,322.4 hours without a Class A mishap, setting a new record for Navy tactical jet squadrons.

Yep looks like leading edge is topside colour....makes sense
I don't know the builder of this wonderful model, so I hesitated to post a photo, BUT hey it is a gorgeous model and if it is your build, just let me know and I will be happy to reference your talents and give you credit

Mine will be more weathered than this but I hope half as good.
The callouts for paint shades by the Tamiya instructions are a bit darker than that build's, seems to be many variations

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

Been making progress spraying the underside this morning. Different than the top as far flatter and I am using Tamiya white vinyl tape as the primary masking line
Here I have the inside line the vinyl tape and then a layer of regular Tamiya outside where it touches painted areas and then I use painters tape and paper for gross large area coverage beyond that
Image

Peeling back the vinyl...line looks pretty darn good. Love the Tamiya XF-19 sprays so sweet

Finished off stripe three of four for the bottom

Time for a dog walk in the snow and some shovelling

Looks great! I don't enjoy masking, but I enjoy removing it when I can get results like that :th:

Lubrication assistance by rum and egg nog, the fourth line is sprayed.
The bottom painted a heck of a lot cleaner than the topside...fewer compound curves and vinyl tape used
Image

Have to clean up topside now

She looking good pal. The colours are right, it's not a full wrap around as you would think so the coloured on the top and bottom of the outer wing air different. Like you I did mine as a dirty bird, but I made a school boy error and didn't seal it properly before putting the wash on :bash:

Thanks Simon :cheers2:
Wish I painted the bottom first, it was a breeze compared to those compound curves on the top
Gettting close to clear coating it and then panel lines, decals and weathering
