Porsche 928 Japanese Soap Opera for Sam

Post by Twokidsnosleep »

A fitting title for my Porsche build...they usually are a Soap Opera.
The box art has a pair of Soap opera-looking stars on it in a weird marketing strategy to attract younger buyers maybe???

So found this in the stash and it seems like it should be a good quick build as it is a curb side model.
Plan is to make it alongside the re-do of a 911 Slant Nose I have been banging away at slowly but surely since the spring.
We shall see how that goes 'cause I have ALL the time in the world

Sprue shot with instructions and a note to myself when purchased and how much I paid.....hmm that was smart, need to start doing that again
Image

I hate those style wheels, but am going to try to build this straight OOB if I can, which is unlikely ;)

Searching through some of the wheels I have, going to go with the 18" Nismos pictured in the middle and make them deep dish with low profile tires.
Image

Also going to shave the side door bumper thingy off and get a smoother line on the door
Was looking at the quality of the model after watching Paul's video on his Revell...the Fujimi is not much better.
Lots of flash and indiscriminate detail. No engine as is curb side and I have a broken body at the rear of the hatchback
The Fujimi Enthusiast kits are of MUCH better quality

Ya, I strongly dislike the kit ones
Hey, what colour do you do the floorpan of these beasts??
Black, silver or body colour???

This is the idea of my build...smooth sides, darker blue Tamiya Royal Blue or black paint and deep dish spoke wheels

Ya kinda...just went Ultimate grey. Looks ok
My BMW has everything black underneath , but as the model will be painted black or dark blue, nice to have a smidgen of contrast
Image
Not looking forward to picking out all the details with hand painting
Smoothed the left flares out and added CA glue over top for strength and seal all the little air holes

"That's me. But I am really enjoying it, oh yeah"......going to do some Sam quotes as we go along

Some things just cannot be skipped or scrimped on in a kit...hollow seats??.really??
Making seat backs out of thin styrene sheet and TET
Image

As seen on the left, the styrene is thin so, you can just trim with a blade to get it flush then sand...sooooo much better

Belly painting finished with a smidge of weathering and blackwash...exhaust still to go with my signature chrome tips of course
Image

Messing with new wheels...deeper dish lip on the rears, smaller on the front
Image
Image

A test view with wheels tires and body...not bad, better than those phone dials
Image

Got some adjusting around to do with the wheels as they have a weird attatchment pin unlike all other aftermarket wheels I have seen :bash:
Thinking about some colour to the spokes and maybe a matching stripe under the doors as well  :

This is a bit of a boring car, so trying to spice it up a little bit
Day worth of progress. Interior painted.
I added a metal decal to the seat headrest areas and then sprayed Ultimate flat black...the whole darn interior
Image

Then a bit of play with the body and a ROUGH test
Will do an orange stripe and want to add either the black logo or the chrome one...meh, not sure yet

Image

Image

Then for the wheels, this is what I think I will try with the spokes
Image

To end up a bit darker blue than this, but similar idea
Image
Anyhow, that is where I think this thing is headed

I did a little interpretive colouring to mock up the paint scheme and translated the Japanese Soap Opera box language for you
Image
Paint will be a bit darker blue X-3 Tamiya, not quite Gulf shade but a bit of a nod to that scheme

It is OK...not as cool a version as other Porsches, but it is a road car. My Favourite Porsche is a 944 and then the little 914-6

If you want to see amaze balls, have a peek at exmoor's Rothman's Porsche build.
That one is sweet and I have Porsche envy

Some of you guys have already finished your beautiful Porsches.
Lack of detail in this kit means I have to make my own disks and calipers.
So cut out some circles from sheet styrene
Image

Mounted circle onto a mandrel and into a battery powered Dremel
Image

Sanded two at a time against a course file then a Ultimate stick until perfectly round
Image

In pairs drilled some holes
Image

Better than having nothing

Really stepping off the cliff now
I have to attach these wheels somehow and they are set up wrong for this kit.
I will stick to Fujimi's aftermarket wheels from now on as these ones came without tires and a weird mounting

So cutting out the centre hub and installing a brass machine screw
Image

Then tapping threads into a brass sleeve to accept the screw and allow me to tighten up the wheels
Image

A little closer up and you can see the brass sleeve taped into place as I attempt to get the wheel locations correct
May put in an aluminum spacer to cover the threads and get the correct side to side dimensions
Image

More work than anticipated, but I think it will work out :shifty:

Thanks mate :cheers2:

A lot of problem solving went into this as once you cut the centre sprue off and drill out the hub you are kinda toast if it doesn't fly
Think I will wedge a long front and rear tube of brass that the screws will thread into rather than short sleeve I show taped, then cut threaded length off the screw and re-thread them with a die
Uggg simple curb side kit, all because I didn't like the mags :wall: :bash:

Haha you'll have it done in a jiffy :nena: but in all seriousness it's all about the skills that make you a better modeller for the next crappy kit you've got from when time began that at the time you think yeah that'll look really good till you have a proper look and it's a bag of errm stinking brown squidgy stuff  I have faith in your modelling ability and engineering skill to overcome all them problems and make a silk purse blah blah :D

Some progress on the rear axle. I have threaded a brass rod and passed it through where the axel would sit, messed with a few bits to get the thicker brass in and supported.
Image

Then screwed in the wheel bolt and got the proper side to side distance figured out.

Image

Found a set of wider rear tires so I have offset skinny front and wider rears.
Image

Still need to do the same to the front axle, make disk brakes and calipers, maybe paint the body?? that would be nice
Ready to finish this beast so I can put it away high up in the closet

The first layers of paint outcome.....meh, not bad so far, actually pretty happy

Image

I like the orange accents
Image

Image

Tamiya X-3 with Tamiya Laquer thinner. The Laquer thinner really lets the Tamiya flow and lay down smoothly. I go about 60:40 thinner:paint. It is mostly by feel and look of paint in the cup.
The thinner was RossiM1's suggestion for my yellow Tamiya on the Sea King build and I think I will use that method often :thumb2:
Thanks again for that tip bud you are a lifesaver

Wish I could go MRP or Zero paints, but thankfully the Canadian Gorvernment, aside from trying to over tax my azz even more, protects import of such terrible substances into Canada. Fentanyl is ok, but no volatile model paints

Thank you Dan, classic colour combination indeed
Good progress for a Saturday, have to basically finish this weekend as unreliable time and energy during weekdays

I always say Wheels and tires make a car, so worked on just that today
Got the wheels painted up and the disk brakes, air valve and the rotors done.
A dry fit picture before popping on the rubber tires and torquing them into place
