I fought myself about getting an airbrush and compressor and all the other things I am buying because I thought I could do everything with what I already had. Boy was I wrong. I finally bit the bullet and gave into temptation! lol

Over the past year, I have been slowly transforming my computer desk area in a corner of our dining room into my modelling area. Building my own paint rack was a god send as it frees up so much space and keeps things organised. I have a cheapo spray booth and full mask. Spray booth gets set-up on dining room table as and when I need it and the hose vents out the chimney of our open fire place.

Dad built me some shelves for my paints today. There is a groove in the front so I can slide a 'door' in so if I need to move the shelves I can just close the door and keep it all together.

Nice work area's guy's. I'm a long time model builder just getting into Military building. I built a bench over the summer and used 2 10' counter top's from lowe's. Just built the paint rack's and i'm still working on stocking up the paint collection.

I made an effort to clean up a bit. I even added the peg board yesterday for some help keeping neat. That shelf was made for something else, so the paints have a lot of room. I need a new shelf. The 'Remove Before Flight' ribbons are real. They came from an A-10 base in Connecticut. The base rented some grills and other party items from us and tied these off to the propane tanks. I ended up with them.

The bigger one is a toy, with wheels, that will fit one of the figures in the cockpit. The other is actually a CD case!

My making cave is actually ddark and mysterious, and also quite tiny as space is at a premium. And normally it is tidy and ordered but as you can see in this picture I am hard at work.

What? Lazy slacking off with coffee is a supremely important part of modelmaking.

A triple bright lamp. Cost about £70-£80, can't remember where I bought it from, but Paul has found somewhere cheap that sells them :)

Actually, I would be REALLY interested in finding out where that lamp came from too. Lighting is my big issue in my area, not for working but for filming. I need to have free-standing lighting as I can't mount anything to anything. Would you be able to find out for us? Thanks :)

Cool, cheers, I'll check that out :) The only thing I have to watch for is that I don't get flourescent flicker - I film on iPhone and sometimes I get that annoying horizontal flicker because of the tube refresh rate. Definitely interesting though, could be up for one of these.

Thanks Scott, that square inset was originally a window, I swapped the glass for an insulated panel so I could vent the booth through it, it was a shame to lose the natural light but condensation formed on the glass like a waterfall lol !
This is what I'm using at the moment, but I will have a new larger setup that will be going to fit into the edge of that alcove later this month

This is how it is at the moment, it works ok but I can't fit the larger models in the booth
Image20150203_124935 by brundledonk, on Flickr

And this is how it looked down there before I started, I'm still amazed by the difference when I look at this picture

Those are fabulous work spaces, both in progress and soon to be.
I love looking at these shots. It gives ideas for all sorts of dangerous improvements. :)

So my wife asks that I make a space for a "comfy chair" in my cave. She says that she'd like to pop in and watch movies or tv on the computer while I'm working sometimes.
So a hour or so work and a parking space for M'lady.
Before we built our house my cave was a corner in the spare bedroom of our apartment. After the kids were asleep we'd go hang out in the spare room and watch TV on the PC. The TV in the living room was too loud and woke the kids. So we had to hide out in the cave.
It became a habit.
After we moved the house was so big everyone had their own space and I was left alone in the cave all the time at night. I was getting bored and she was too.
Time for a change.

well here is my little acorn....

hoping to make a paint rack soon to fix across the back, the table is a repurposed model railway board I built (I have another huge one taking up space) from the period between when I thought me and junior would like model railways and I realised Model railways are pretty dull and high maintenance....

One day it will look like some of these other cool setups!!
