50 Shades of Gray (GB or SIG idea)

Post by bfrd »

Any WWII subject. The only allowed colors are black, white, and a mixture of the two. It might be interesting to see a model match a B&W photo. Perhaps showcase the Ultimate primer and only use the Black and White primers? Decals would almost certainly have to be custom, but that is just another skill to showcase, right?

Just a thought from a new guy.

P.S. Perhaps to make the model more interesting, Black and White + One. Choose any one color to add to your model.

Yanno...I really like this idea. Sorry I didn't see it until just now. If you're still into it I can start making some noise about it.

Nice to know I wasn't completely off my rocker for suggesting it. :cheers2:

I was considering suggesting something like this for one of next years GBs.

I think it would be different. This type of build would showcase the builder's skill at working "off-script". I don't think I have ever seen a kit designed for this, so the builder will have to mix each color. If you have ever converted a color photo to black and white, you will know there is a TON of variation in the conversion. The builder will have a lot of control over the total contrast and final look of the model.

I think limiting the "paint" to the Ultimate (Badger) primers is a good way to showcase the versatility those products. I have heard (and seen) many modelers using the primer as "paint". So this would just highlight what can be done with just primers (and clear coats).

I honestly don't know if I like the B+W+1 color idea. I think in the end it might look too odd. I really like the effect when done on photos, but I don't know how it would come across on a real model.

Funny story, I did a Bandai Stormtrooper for a friend of mine with nothing but Ultimate/Badger Flat Black and White. Turned out great! I've left the black primer bare on occasion for smaller bits on a model; it's a nice satin black and in the case of the Stormtrooper is pretty much perfect for the clothy bits.

Even if you skip the other colors, black, white, and grey gives you everything you'd need to do a monochrome/B&W build. They mix just fine if you want to vary the shade.
