HobbyBoss 1/72 Mi-24V 'Hind-E'

Post by Lysion »

:heli: HobbyBoss 1/72 Mi-24V 'Hind E' :heli:

One of the more known helicopters throughout history must be without a doubt the Mi-24. This will be my entry for the Whirleybird SIG. This first post will showcase a small part of the long history behind the model. I hope you will enjoy following this build thread.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was in need of a heavily armed and heavily armored transport helicopter. The result of intense development was the Mil Mi-24, or the "Hind" as the NATO calls it. It is a gunship and attack helicopter. One of the main things about developing this aircraft was to make it fast. In order to do this they tried to streamline the airframe and fit it with retractable tricycle undercarriage.

The helicopter can not only be equipped with missiles, robots and machine guns, but can also be used as a transport for eight passengers. It has been operated since 1972 by the Soviet Union and Russia. Over 30 other nations have also had it in service. It was by Soviet Pilots called the ‘flying tank’ or ‘the Crocodile’ because of its camouflage scheme. About 2,300 Mi-24 has been built and is still in service as of today with the Russian Air Force as its primary users.

The specific version I am going to be building is the Mi-24V (Hind-E) version. This version entered production in 1976 and was first seen by the west in the early 80’s. The Mi-24V Hind-E was equipped with advanced radio guided anti-tank missile systems from the Soviet Union called Shturm. Eight of these could be mounted across the wings. This version was produced in at about 1,500 units.

Since the helicopter has been used since the 70’s it has seen action in numerous conflict s. The first conflict was the Ogaden War, where the Mi-24 together with the Ethiopian forces fought against Somalia. It was instrumental in retaking the town of Ogaden in 1978. Other conflicts in which the helicopter has seen combat in is for example the Soviet war in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989, the Iran-Iraq War between 1980-1988. In modern history it was used in the Iraq War from 2003 to 2010, the Libyan civil war in 2011. It is still in use in the Afghanistan War since 2001. Today it is used in the Syrian civil war by forces loyal to the Syrian president against the rebels.

Thank you.

First of all I want to say that It will be really interesting to follow each and every build in this SIG. (Saying it here once, instead of making one post in each individually build thread.) :pop:

Here comes my pictures of the model in unstarted state. Also showing some of the detail on certain parts.

The sprues comes individually bagged. There was even bubblewrap around the main rotor blades. :thumb1:
Image

The decal sheet:

The painting scheme comes in color with callouts for Gunze, Vallejo, Model Master, Tamiya, and Humbrol colors. There are two choices, either an Iraqi version, or this one; a Russian one. I'm choosing to build the Russian version.
Image

And now some detail shots; The parts are well engineered, no ejector pin marks on uncomfortable places like there could be on seats for examples. Thank you!
Image

The cockpit and sidewall also have some pretty nice details. Will be a new challenge to try and paint it as good as possible.:
Image
Image

The model features very fine and crisp panel lines as you can so on this detail shot of the airframe.
Image

Also the rotor hub features fine detail. Will be fun to try pick out the detail! 8-)
Image

The only letdown is the clear part canopy. The canopy is such a center point. I will really have to purchase some high-grit sandpaper and polishing sticks to remove that awful seam that runs through the middle: :bash: :pistols:

I built the same kit earlier in the year, you might find my build vid of interest.

I think its a pretty good kit and build up quite nicely.

Those cockpit seams are a nuisance but with the correct tools you will soon sort that out...the latest ISM October News Show video that Lee put up yesterday also has a short review on the Ultimate Modelling Products sanding sponges...these will sort that problem out...very useful tools...I shall be getting an order in very soon for a set. :th:

Good luck with the build :th:

Thank you for the vid. Watched it with interest and It helped me abit. :th:

Here comes my first update. And Warning! I'm just a beginner so don't expect museum quality. :violin:

Cockpit details assembled:

Cockpit unpainted:
Image

I'm not the best brush painted, and especially not this small. I feel I do not have the right equipment or skills. But it turned out quite nice. I'll hope I can make a wash to pick some detail out. And the cockpit is not entirely finished yet, still some things to do!
Image

The transport room's roof:
Image

After masking the sides and painted the inner roof:
Image

Ejector pin mark on the inner side of the aircrafts body:
Image

I removed the pin mark, primed and painted the sides. Some of the pin marks will not be visible so I did not bother with them:

We all started as beginners. Heck, I'm still a beginner in a lot of areas of the hobby. I believe that, like any craft, there is a lifetime of things to learn. It really is a journey. Your model is coming along well. ISM is probably one of the best places around to just build models and enjoy one anothers support/ company.
