HobbyBoss 1/35 Pzkpfw II Ausf.J (VK16.01)

Post by Jan01 »

Well here it is, my entry into my first SIG.

A little history:

Panzer II Ausf. J (Pz.Kpfw. IIJ)

Continued development of the reconnaissance tank concept led to the much up-armored Ausf. J, which used the same concept as the Pz.Kpfw. IF of the same period, under the experimental designation VK 1601. Heavier armor was added, bringing protection up to 80 mm on the front and 50 mm to the sides and rear, with 25 mm roof and floor plates, increasing total weight to 18 tonnes. Equipped with the same Maybach HL45P as the Pz.Kpfw. IF, top speed was reduced to 31 km/h. Primary armament was the 2 cm KwK 38 L/55 gun. 22 were produced by MAN between April and December 1942, and seven were issued to the 12th Panzer Division on the Eastern Front.

My main goal is to do the tank of course, but if I have time I will try to put 1 or 2 figures in.

A little tip for those new to AFV modelling, to ensure everything was in line with the axles I used a metal ruler.

Thanks to a link I have just seen on another Panzer II topic (thanks panzermeister36), I came across this

Panzer II Ausf j
The Ausf J (22 built by MAN early 1943), was an heavily armored version of the Panzer II, which had nothing in common but the name. It was very close to the Panzer I Ausf F, but only twenty-two were built in all. The hull, tracks, engine, were similar to the later, but with a modified turret holding the Rheinmetall 20mm. Both Pzr-IF and Pzr-IIJ were dubbed "little tigers" by the Russians and the Germans. - See more at: http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/n ... ZWo8S.dpuf

More work on the model. While waiting fot the tracks to set, I decided to undercoat the turret.
Had a small problem with the first PE on the front left fender, I landed up bending it the wrong way. Soon solved the problem so the rest was done the right way. I did the one set of tracks a couple of weeks ago while home for the weekend, so did the other side today, this was done in half the time as the first. Still have a few more PE parts to do and a few other parts, then its onto painting the model.

Thanks Tom, for the time being I am using aerosol cans. Have 2 cans, so as the pressure dies down on one, I have to change to another. Hopefully soon I will be able to get a compressor.
