Zvezda 1/72 Yak-130 "Mitten"

Hey Guys,

I'm starting a new build of the quite new 1/72 scale Yak-130 kit from Zvezda.

This will be a buddy build together with ChancerNW, a gentleman that contacted me on YouTube. I will make vlogs on my YouTube channel, but I will also put up a regular build-thread as well

I did a YouTube inbox review of the kit a while ago, so I will not go into the details of the kit.

But here's the box contents anyway:










The subject itself is a modern trainer and light attack aircraft produced by russian manufacturer Yakovlev. It's NATO codename is "Mitten"



So.... The build starts off with assembling the engines.


Kit parts look wornderful.






I will paint the airscoops before assembly. I'll use Gloss Black Primer andf ALclad Duraluminium for the metal parts and Ultimate White primer and Tamiya X-2 for the white air intakes.

A sneak-peek of the PE fret to make sure that there are no PE parts that should be included. But all parts seems to go into the cockpit


Assembly of the engines. Everything fits together perfectly, but the kit is quite engineered






Ok.... back to the landing gear bay.. Got some ejection pin marks to fix.








Dryfitting.... just to check that everything aligns up properly

The build goes on with completion of the main undercarriage and the rear half of the fuselage.



Great details but there are some need for cleaning up mouldlines






Preparing the leading edges of the airscoops for paint... starting with Ultimate White primer




...and X-2


Rest of painted details primed with Grey primer


Tubing should be painted with Trainer Yellow - but this is the closest I have at hand Gunze H34


Landing gear compartment and oleo struts painted with Gunze H308


Glued together and some touchup with metal colour


Masked for metal paint on the air intake leading edges






Some weathering - maybe too much




Masking for flat coat


Gluing in the bottom part in rear fuselage


Some gaps that needs attention...


This will need a lot of work to fix... I'm thinking of adding a thin sheet of plasticard to cover up the seams...


Next up is the cockpit - that's always fun

Yes, it's a really good kit and the aircraft is really cool too.

Take a look at this 1/4 scale Yak-130 RC jet - awesome work! It's so good that it's useful too look at for reference when building.

Hello again!

It's time for building and detailing the cockpit - my favorite parts



After the first shock and initial "photo etch vertigo" have stopped it's time to plan which parts that I will replace with PE and what parts that look good enough (or are far to complicated compared to what the offer). After that we're ready to cut some parts loose from the sprue.

Trying out the trick with putting the primer bottle in a warm water-bath

...and it worked like a charm - great suggestion

The office painted with XF-1 and XF-23 - it's not the perfect match but is works great with the painted PE panels.


HUD in PE


There's tons on small details where most of them goes into the cockpit, but I'm not gonna use all of the.


I have painted the MFDs black, because the aircraft will be gear down. Coated the screens with X-22


Some drybrushing of details and worn surfaces

Flatcoated all parts (except the MFDs that should be semigloss) and started the assembly

I've been thinking of buying this kit. It looks like a sweet little plane to build, too. And, as much as I hate photo etch, it really makes the cockpit stand out!

It's a great kit, I can really recommend it! The only downside I have found sofar is that the Assembly Instruction is a bit sparse and there are some minor errors, but the kit parts are fantastic and it's really fun to build!

Really tiny parts for the nose landing gear - will that tiny leg really hold the weight of the aircraft

Painted with Gunze H319, Tamiya XF-85 and Gunze H308


Not far behind resin level of detailing here... Airbrushed the main wheels and the hub of the nose wheel


Brushpainted the XF-85 on the nose wheel


Sidewalls painted with Tamiya X-23 added a smallPE sign too

So, the build continues...


Well, first bit of setback; the assembly instructions is a little vague about the location of the IP-cover and there is no location-pins or any other reference to tell where it should sit - so I tried to guess a bit but it didn't work
I had to pry it off and put it in a better location...


I added the windshield to protect the HUD, since I had already destroyed it once and had to fix it


Sanded down the injection ports, glue filler of the seams and polished the surfaces






Masked the insides of the airscoops to protect the bare metal stripe on the inside

...now I need to figure out how to mask and paint the outside...

Mated the fuselage sections and fitted the top of the air intakes/funnels

Hello!

My family have been down and out (winter vomiting bug) for almost a week. But now everyone, me included, are up on our feet again.

So let's continue with the build now!


Using some kitchen foil as a reflector for the nav light


Dryfitting the top wing section - the fit is not 100% perfect, but let's worry about that later


We need to finish some seams on the fuselage first. Remeber those difficult seams on the exhaust heat shield ?

The thing with CA-glue is that it is much harder than styrene, so a soft sanding stick will not sand down the surface evenly. I got sanding sticks with a hard back for that purpose, but in this case I need something round to wrap the sanding paper around. I found an old brush handle that I sacrificed





...and it worked fine.


I will put that aside for 24 hours so the primer cures before I put on the Stainless Steel metal

Painted the sidewalls - I think this is the third section


Meanwhile, let's prepare the rest of the parts needed for the wings

Short update today; I just painted the metal colour on the exhaust heat shield.

I decided to use a lighter metal tone, since I want to do some heat staining and weathering - so Duraluminium is a better choice than Stainless Steel I think....

I found this exciting paint scheme - looks awesome, don't you think ?


Just kidding.... a B/W paint-callout is just so much Zvezda....
They should really invest in a colour leaflet for the paint callout....

Instead let's look at some reference pictures:








The loadout will be something based on this picture:


Wingtips will have ECM pods followed by R-73E Wympel AAM.
The next two pylons will have a S-8 and S-13 rocket launcher pod each and finally a SNPU-130 gunpod in the centerline position.

It's not much left to assemble now, before I can start painting.

Next up are the wingsections:







I will paint the pylons in the same colour as the underside, so I will glue in the hardpoints aswell


ECM pods for the wing-tips


Weapons; I decided to make a last minute change - the S-13 rocket launchers where replaced with two KAB-500Kr Optical AGMs


It's quite a loadout for a pocket-sized aircraft like that

Hey Guys,

It's been a slow day at the bench... didn't get much done at all..

Well well, but I cleaned up the ordnance preparing it for primer. Drilled out some holes for the pins on the hardpoints. I will use them to put all the small stuff on cocktailsticks


I also sanded and down some seams and polished the surfaces with a buffing stick. The only critical seam that is left to take care of is the joint between the cockpit tub and the main wing - I wasn't able to solve it despite my attempts to dryfit and find the cause of the gap.

But this is the only serious fit issue I have seen with this kit sofar..... I have no problems to accept that.

I filled the gaps with sprue-glue

Now I need that to cure for a couple of days, so I will continue with the ordnance...

I started by gluing the ECM pods to the wingtips

I have started to put primer on the weapons!


And after a couple of days the sprue-glue had cures so I could sand down the excess material and get rid of the seams


Next up is masking

Ohai guys!

Started the masking and painting this weekend










Canopy masked.

Undercarriage and engine inlet and exhausts masked


Added the small pitot tubes. Normally I add the small parts last thing, but in this case I wanted the joints to conform with the fuselage side.


I'm aware that I spend a lot of time on masking the model before painting, but I believe that it's the only way to do it if the details should remain crisp...

But now it's time for primer!

... but I ran into some problems right out the gates

I bought this 120 ml bottle back in the days before Ultimate had the distribution for Stynylrez Primer in Europe - two years ago or something. Since I'm mainly building 1/72 aircrafts the bottle have been *very* long lasting
But now it's time to retire it

With a new bottle everything worked as expected


So.... In order to plan the paintjob I need to convert the Zvezda/Humbrol paint callouts to Gunze/Tamiya. I got a paint conversion chart in the latest issue of Airfix Model World.


I selected these paints for the cammo


Here's the subject:


Bare metal for the S-8 rocket launcher pods


XF-2 White for the Wympel missiles


I did some experimentation with XF-2 White and X-19 Smoke for the optics of the KAB-500Kr AGM.

I'm not superhappy with the result, so I might have to do something more....

Quick update!

I wasn't 100% happy with the Gunze H21 for the belly of the aircraft, so I mixed my own brew from Tamiya paints. Don't ask me about the ratios; I have no clue how many drops I used of the paints


Painted the gun pod with Vallejo Metallic and XF-82 Ocean Gray


Painted the underside part of the aircraft with my "Off White"-mix.


I will leave it until tomorrow when I will continue with masking

It's masking time - yay!

I'm masking the underside to protect it from overspray - it's amazing how paint dust can find it's way (to where it shouldn't be)....




Topside ready for the first cammo colour


I usually start with the lightest colours first and the darkest one last.... This is Gunze H308 for the light grey areas


I'll let that cure until tomorrow, when I will continue with masking and the light green..

There are a couple of mistakes on the bottom side that I need to fix and the cammo is not exactly like the reference pictures - but I'm happy with it anyway.

Next up is to mask the nose, tail and top of the vert stab and put on some Dark Grey.

Hey Guys!

I forgot to paint the bare metal leading edges of the air intakes earlier; so I will have to do a bit of funky masking job now... It had been much easier to paint it earlier on and masking the edges




....but I got there in the end



I had to use Vallejo Acrylic Metal, since I already had painted it with Tamiya acrylics. Alclads doesn't work well on top of acrylics...

Got some Aqua Gloss on!



I was a little worried that the glosscoat would darken the "off-white" and make it too yellow - but it looks just fine

I took a closer look at the decals; in general they look fine but I'm a bit worried about silvering of those large decals. I might have to trim them before I put them on.




I will leave the gloss to cure overnight and I start decalling tomorrow

All setup - even got a cup of coffe on the side...


So far so good...


I was a bit woried about the large decals on the wingsection. So I trimmed the decal by removing the large transferfilm section...



Drawback was that it was really difficult to align the lines....

....and we run into the first serious "I goofed up"!

I left a couple of large drops of Micro Sol on the "No Step"-stencils and it ate through the Aqua Gloss and first layer och paint.
I will have to fix this....

Some of the stencils are barely larger than fly-poop!




I will continue tomorrow with the stencils... My eyes need to rest now

Speaking of the gunpod; I have painted it in the wrong colour


But it should ofcourse have the same colour as the belly of the aircraft

Hey Guys!

Painted some bits and bobs...


I also fixed the lenses of the KAB-500r; I was never happy with my first attemp, so I repainted the tip with X-2 White and dipped it into X-19 Smoke so I got a dark semitransparent look. After that masked the tip with a small masking tape roundel and sprayed the missile with XF-82 once again.
It looks much better now I think


I decided to fix the ruined paintjob on the leading edges of the wings... so yesterday I coated the decals with Aqua Gloss to protect the decals. After that I cut thin strips of masking tape and "detacked" them a bit. I used Panzer Putty for the masking as well.


Light green sprayed on...


More masking and Dark green sprayed on... just tiny tiny amounts of paint (2 drops thinner annd one drop paint)


Next up is the Light grey...


And we are finished!

The paint will look more uniform after a layer of Aqua Gloss.
