HobbyBoss 1/72 Grumman F9F Panther

Post by TommyKillander »

Hey Guys!

I will enter this GB with one of the "early birds" of the Jet era; another "MiG -killer" from the Korean Conflict - The Grumman F9F Panther.

Background:
The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and one of the United States Navy's first successful carrier-based jet fighters. A single-engined, straight-winged day fighter, it was armed with four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon and could carry a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions.

The Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the Korean War. It was also the first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, used by them from 1949 through late 1954. The aircraft was exported to Argentina and was the first jet used by the Argentine Naval Aviation.

Total F9F production was 1,382. The design evolved into the swept wing Grumman F-9 Cougar.

Image

Design and Development:
Development studies at Grumman for jet-powered fighter aircraft began near the end of World War II as the first jet engines emerged. In a competition for a jet-powered night fighter for the United States Navy, the Douglas F3D Skyknight was selected over Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation's G-75 two-seat, four-Westinghouse J30-powered design, with Douglas being issued a contract on 3 April 1946. The Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) also issued a contract to Grumman for two Model G-75 experimental aircraft on 11 April 1946, being given the Navy designation XF9F-1, in case the Skyknight ran into problems.

Grumman soon realized the G-75 was a losing design but had been working on a completely different, single-engine day fighter designated the Grumman G-79. In a bureaucratic maneuver, BuAer did not cancel the G-75 (XF9F-1) contract but changed the wording to include three entirely different G-79 prototypes. The G-79 became the Grumman F9F Panther.

The prototype Panther, piloted by test pilot Corky Meyer, first flew on 21 November 1947. American engines available at the time included the Allison J33 and Westinghouse J34, but these were not considered sufficiently reliable, so the Navy specified the imported Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet, which was also more powerful at 5,000 lb. of thrust. Production aircraft would have a Nene engine built under license by Pratt & Whitney as the J42. Since there was insufficient space within the wings and fuselage for fuel for the thirsty jet, permanently mounted wingtip fuel tanks were added, which incidentally improved the fighter's rate of roll.

It was cleared for flight from aircraft carriers in September 1949. During the development phase, Grumman decided to change the Panther's engine, selecting the Pratt & Whitney J48-P-2, a license built version of the Rolls-Royce RB.44 Tay. The other engine that had been tested was the Allison J33-A-16. The armament was a quartet of 20-mm guns, the Navy having already switched to this caliber (as opposed to the USAAF/USAF which continued to use 12.7-mm M2/M3 guns). As well, the Panther soon was armed with underwing air-to-ground rockets and up to 2,000 lb (910 kg) of bombs.

From 1946, a swept-wing version was considered and after concerns about the Panther's inferiority to its MiG opponents in Korea, a conversion of the Panther (Design 93) resulted in a swept-wing derivative of the Panther, the F9F Cougar, which retained the Panther's designation number.

Image

Operation in the US Navy:
The Grumman Panther was the primary U.S. Navy and USMC jet fighter and ground-attack aircraft in the Korean War. The Panther was the most widely used U.S. Navy jet fighter of the Korean War, flying 78,000 sorties and scoring the first air-to-air kill by the U.S. Navy in the war, the downing of a North Korean Yakovlev Yak-9 fighter. F9F-2s, F9F-3s and F9F-5s, as rugged attack aircraft, were able to sustain operations, even in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire. The pilots also appreciated the air conditioned cockpit, which was a welcome change from the humid environment of piston-powered aircraft.

Despite their relative slow speed, Panthers also managed to shoot down two Yak-9s and seven Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15s for the loss of two F9Fs. On 3 July 1950, Lieutenant, junior grade Leonard H. Plog of U.S. Navy's VF-51 flying an F9F-3 scored the first U.S. Navy air victory of the war by shooting down a Yak-9.

The first MiG-15 was downed on 9 November 1950 by Lieutenant Commander William (Bill) Amen of VF-111 "Sundowners" flying an F9F-2B. Two more MiG-15s were downed on 18 November 1950. The final four MiG-15s were downed on 18 November 1952 by Lt. Royce Williams of VF-781, flying off the USS Oriskany during a series of air strikes against the North Korean port of Hoeryong, right across the mouth of the Tumen River from the major Soviet base at Vladivostok. Williams' victories were notable because all four were flown by Soviet Naval Aviation pilots.

No other fighter pilot ever scored four MiG-15s in a single combat. Future astronaut Neil Armstrong flew the F9F extensively during the war, even ejecting from one of the aircraft when it was brought down by a wire strung across a valley, in 1951. Future astronaut John Glenn and Boston Red Sox all-star baseball player Ted Williams also flew the F9F as Marine Corps pilots.

Panthers were withdrawn from front-line service in 1956, but remained in training roles and with U.S. Naval Air Reserve and U.S. Marine Air Reserve units until 1958. The Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration team used the Panther for four years, beginning in 1951. The Panther was the Blue Angels' first jet. Some Panthers continued to serve in small numbers into the 1960s. From September 1962 surviving operational Panthers were redesignated F-9 within the new combined US tri-service designation system.

Okay, so my plan in to build the fighter-version F9F-2, but since I only managed to get hold of a kit with the recce-version (F9F-2P) I need to modify it a little bit and use aftermarket decals.

Awesome! Been thinking about an ancient F9F-8 Cougar kit just for fun so I'm watching this with lots of interest.

I love this bird and have always wanted to try this kit. Years ago, I built the Hasegawa F9F-8 Cougar.

I take it your converting this kit from a photo aircraft (-2P) to the standard -2.

Yes, that's correct.

Okey, I'm way behind schedule on this build, but after finishing the Kfir it hasn't been much time for modelling

But I have done some research and I'm going to build an individual from VMF-311/WL, "Willy Lovers" or "Tomcats" during the Korean War.

Yay! Finally some buildtime :th:

Last two weeks have been crazy, lots of family and work stuff that (believe it or not) have higher priority than scalemodelling :wtf:

So, I finally got to put the sprue-cutter into the kit and start the build - unsuprisingly we start with the cockpit. There are a lot of nice detail in this kit and if you like to detail paint the knobs and dials of an IP or control panel in 1/72 scale, this kit might be something for you ;)
Image

But since I will use a PE zoom-kit all that nice detail has to go... :shifty:
Image

I did some scratchbuilding of the hot air hose that leads from the pit to the canopy. A piece of 32 gauge guitar-string is used for that. Lots of fiddly PE on the bang-seat and I also added the padding on the gunsight.
Image
I have been warned about the canopy design, so I will take special care with that later on in the build.

Did I mention that this kit has really nice details.... ?
Image

I removed the plastic antenna and replaced it with a PE part. I had to use a trick for this that I think saw in the ISM Facebook flow a couple of years ago; I used some Tamiya Extra Thin to soften the plastic a bit and then I pressed the edge of the PE antenna into the soft plastic. After leaving it for 5 minutes so the plastic hardened a bit I secured it with some CA-glue.
Image

All small parts have been cleared from the sprue and cleaned up and they are now ready for primer!

Hey Guys!

It's finally time to start painting stuff :thumb2:

The paint guide in the instructions suggests black ejection seat, interior green cockpit tub and white undercarriage/wheel houses. Maybe that is correct for a F9F-2P, but I'm building a F9F-2 so I had to do some research.

After checking photos I decided to mix my own green zinc chromate, since I could not find any match in the Tamiya range.
This was done using XF-4 as a base and adding XF-1 Black until I got something that matched. I ended up with 100 drops of XF-4 and 35 drops of XF-1)
Image
Please note that my camera has a whitebalance setting that makes the green look a bit "cold", it has more green in it IRL ;)

Time to paint :)
Image

Brushpainted some black details
Image

Some PE for the IP
Image

I knocked off a small PE lever, but I was lucky that the fret had a spare part :o
Image

Some drybrushing with XF-66 Light Grey and PE seatbelts

Okey...

I have painted up most of the small stuff now. The paint callout suggests Gunze H55 Midnight Blue for the aircraft, but to be honest I think it's too dark for the 1/72 scale so I will instead use XF-17 Sea Blue, which is a little lighter blue.
Image

Wheels painted with White Aluminium
Image

I used my usual trick for painting the tires; diluted XF-85 Rubber Black that is applied like a pinwash. The wash will find it's way around the rims of the wheelhub.
Image

Now it's safe to paint the rest of the rubber area with normal XF-85 straight from the jar.
Image

Let's continue with the resin exhaust, thats the part to the right, the left one is the kitpart and you can see that it's much more shallow than the resin replacement. Part from that it's really not so big difference.
Image
No cleanup is needed and the instructions leaves no room for mistakes  :wtf:

The PE details fits the resin part too... :thumb2:
Image

Dryfitting the fuselage with the resin part - it's a tight fit :shifty:
Image

Painting the engine
Image

Assembled and ready for some weathering
Image

Before I can close up the fuselage I need to fit the tailhook
Image

...but it will not play ball... I can't join the the fuselage halves due to a collision - so I will attach it afterwards instead. To do that I need to make a "wall" so I got something to glue it to.

Hi,

Back at the bench today, the build is progressing quite good :th:

Some weathering of the nose wheel wells.... I had to look up some photos for reference:

Image

Image

I'm using Abteilung oils for this. And I will use a light wash for the undercarriage parts, except the wheels where I use a darker tone
Image

Glued in the engine, pit and nose wheel well. There was a small collision between the well and the pit, but that was easily solved by sanding off 0,5 mm from the cockpit bottom side.
Image

Fuselage halves mated, it went really well. There are a couple small seams but I will deal with them after I have sanded and polished the glue residue from the fuselage. I'll leave it to cure for a day or two first.
Image

Started working on the wings and wingtip fuel tanks. I'll let the glue seams cure for a couple of days too...

Hola!

Lots of work to do to fix the seams and remove the windows on the -2P recce version, since I'm going to convert it to a F9F-2.
Image

Camera ports on the underside where replaced with plasticard
Image

The compartment behind the seat looks wierd. It's in halfway open or halfway closed position that doesn't make sense... :wtf:
Image

...so I will try to fix that. I will scratchbuild this area, so I plug the mounting hole.

Now this needs to cure for a couplr of days atleast.

I've seen the trick with a wound guitarstring as a hose in a buildthread somewhere (can't remember where), so I stole that idea  :shifty:

Thank you Gaz, yeah the build is progressing quite good. The kit doesn't have many parts and it quite nicely engineered so I hope that there are no "gotchas" around the corner ;)
The big challenge will be to get the surfaces and the paint smooth, I think. I will paint it in a Gloss Dark Sea Blue and dark glossy colours like that are very revealing when it comes to surface imperfections.

Hey Guys!

I have continued with the conversion from the F9F-2P model to a F9F-2.

The sprue glue has cured enough now after 3 days, so it's time to sand down the lumps of excess styrene; and to do that I bring out the full arsenal of sanders:
Image

The windown have been sanded and polished.
Image
I have found out that using the reflected flare from my lamp is great for checking that polished surfaces are even. If there is no distortion the shape is free from imperfections.

This is a bit more difficult to check with the above mentioned method, so I have to use my fingers and nails to check the surface instead.
Image

Here's the replacement resin nosecone with the autocannons.
Image

So I have to remove the nosecone from the fuselage.
Image

So after dryfitting the resin nosecone and aligning it, I used a marker pen to draw some reference marks.
Image

After that is was no problem to glue the nose correctly.
Image

I have also sanded the compartment behind flush preparing it for some detailing ;)

Hello !

I managed to get a bit of benchtime today, so here's a small update :)

The air intakes are suffering from severe EPMs (ejection pin marks), so I had to do something about that:
Image
I used a combo of scraping with the scalpel and sanding with a Ultimate Thinny stick.

All my builds seems to have atleast one serious disaster - so here goes:
Image

The wings are very thin at the trailing edge and I managed to cut through it when I cleared the sprue gate !! :bash: :wall:

Bummer.... but I can fix that later after I have assembled the wing.

Opened up some holes for the underwing ordnance; I choosed 6 pcs of HVAR rockets and two GP bombs.
Image
I'm not sure if that is historically accurate, but it looks cool 8-)

I always seem to end up taking a bite out of a leading or trailing wing-edge too... you are not alone!

Really enjoying following along with this one
Thanks Neil :)
I was in a hurry finishing up for the night - "just one last thing before I leave the bench...." :ooops:

Anyway, I think I can fix that, but I'll do it when the wings are assembled.

Very nice work :th:

I have never thought of using a pin wash to do the edge of the wheels before paint the rest - its a great idea!

I'm starting to use that method more and more, instead of using a masking roundels. It works really well :th:

Hey Guys!

The design of the air intakes in the kit are really peculiar... I can't really see any advantage with this design
...but there sure are some disadvantages :wtf:
Image
The upper part of the inlet needs to be aligned perfectly to meet the inside of the upper winghalf.

Things didn't get easier because of me being a bit stupid gluing on the wing underside before I painted the insides in Green Zinc Cromate. But I managed to get the paint on anyway :P
Image

Upper parts of the wing mounted; The fit wasn't perfect. The wing does not fit to the fuselage perfectly, so I had to use some force to get it into position. :bash: Well well... I was warned about this in a review of the kit, so I should have dryfitted it more carefully.
Image

I'll see how it looks tomorrow - it will probably need some CA-glue here and there to fill some gaps.

Stay tuned!

Nothing like coming back after a long break to find three pages of modeling goodness to catch up on. Awesome work.

Last couple wheels I've done were with a similar method, hate trying to cut round masks, I hate trying to paint around the rims. A wash is soooo the way to go to get those done. Need to read up more on your mods, lots to learn here.

This aircraft is looking good. Following along to see your final reveal.

This Hobby Boss parts engineering looks almost as annoying as Trumpeter's aircraft kits.

Thank you, SkyPainter303 :)

Yeah, they're two brands from the same company I think. It's funny how the seem to superdetail some parts and totally miss out in other places; for example the panels on the fuselage and wings look great and so do the undercarriage, but the area behind the cockpit is very sparse... :wtf:
It's almost like the designer lost the mojo or the budget where used up at some point and they just left it :D

Hello guys!

Today I planned to spend a lot of time at the bench, but other things had to be taken care of... :hand:
So I have only added the horisontal stabilisers and trying to get rid of seams...

Image

Horistonal stabs glued in place - I used a Ultimate Thinny Sponge and Ultimate buffer to get rid of the rest of the spruegate and to polish the surfaces to a shine.
Image

...and we have a lot of seamwork to do. The seams are not so big, but since it's a 1/72 scale everything has to be taken care of. I will use CA glue for the joint between the wing halves.
Image

This is where I made a cut into the wing by mistake when clearing a spruegate. I have filled the indentation with CA glue and sanded it but there is still a small dent left, so I will have to make a second pass to fix that. A small amount of rescribing is needed as well to recover the panel lines.
Image

That's all for today, fellas! :D

Nice recovery. If only styrene was as easy to fix as it was to cut.

Yeah, that would be nice... but I would probably be less careful if it did

Ok, I have focused on the compartment behind the ejectionseat and armour plate today. The kit lacks a lot of detail here.... :?
Image
The rails got a little bit oversized  But I think that I'll let that pass...

The hot air tubes for the defrosting (canopy anti-fog) wasn't correct, so I decided to remove all the detail on the "deck" sliding part of the cockpit.
Image

And I built some new details from thin strips of styrene and soldering wire. Added a panel in PE aswell...

Stay tuned!

Hey Guys

There not many parts left on this kit to assemble - so we are getting close to Primer Time

Added the hardpoints for the ordnance; HVAR and 500lb GP bombs.

The square holes I (painstakingly) made in the wings to fit the rockets didn't fit :wtf:
Instead of trying to make the holes bigger in the wing I reduced the size of the square pins in the pylons....
Image

Also added som PE to the tailhook compartment and plugged an ugly seam with some plasticard
Image

The hot air tube in the canopy has a characteristic red heatsheld(?) that I painted and masked.
Image

Painted the area around the cockpit black.
Image

The hot air tube.

Thanks mate, the dent in the wing wasn't so difficult to fix, just needed some patience and time. I had to build up new material in steps and the CA-glue needed to cure in between. Rest is all about using a flat hard sanding stick to even out the bumps and a buffing stick to polish the surface.

Yeah, I really look forward to start painting the Gloss Sea Blue :thumb2:

Hey Guys!

Drybrushing and dryfitting...
Image

And it's finally time for some painting - but first; Tons of Masking!
Image

Painting the wheel bays with my Green Zinc Chromate
Image

Fitted a small piece of PET plastic for the gunsight... It took a while
Image
...but unfortunately it collided with the windshield, so I had to remove it so all work was for nothing :violin:

Windshield fitted and I masked the windows using the masking set.
Image

I had to use the canopy as a template for cutting the mask ;)
Image

Masking of the air intakes and wheel wells - using a combination of tape and foam.
Image

Image

And we have Grey Ultimate Primer on !

Hi there!

I tested out the paints today...

Image

It's a little bit hard to compare flat and gloss paints like this, but the Gunze H55 Midnight Blue seems to be a bit more gray than the Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue. I think I prefer the XF-17 more... but it's a close call and I will probably change my mind 1024 times before I load up my airbrush  :D

However, I wasn't happy how the Alclad looked on flat primer so I have primed the leading edges and the air intakes with Ultimate Gloss Black primer.
Image

I'll leave that for 24 hours to cure before I put on the Polished Aluminium.
