Update 3

Ok so 24 hrs didn't improve the look in my eyes....

So he had an IPA bath this afternoon
Currently letting him air dry after washing off the IPA and old paintwork
ImageImage

Might need to some more work on the seam, as the up a might have loosened the pp putty

Stay tuned......

Update 4

So take 2 on the seam repair

I think I have a handle on the ins and outs of perfect plastic putty
Loving the water clean up

ImageImage

Just need to buff the seams a little, then on to masking the blue pieces that couldn't be removed while the head was together

Feedback is welcomed

Not so much of an update

Was going to reprime tonight, but when I got home the model room was 45c..... that's 112ish f, for you heathens that don't measure temps in centergrade
Tomorrow is forecasted to be just as bad if not worse.... maybe Saturday....

I'm sorry, are you moaning about the fact it's 45C there?! :naughty:

It's been a MAXIMUM of about 3C here where I am in the UK for the last few weeks, and there is barely any daylight and constant drizzle/sleet, I would kill to be basking in 45C heat :geek:

Sorry I missed your poll mate but great to see you back at the bench.

I built the R2 & D4 set as a quick build a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it so I'd have voted for this as well :)

The seam in R2's dome was the only thing that let the set down for me - I just left it but good to see how you're tackling it.
Cheers, Neil

Yeah it's a little uncomforatable when you open the door and walk into a wall of heat. The model room was hotter than it was outside, only got to 39 today. Was suppose to work in a roof space this afternoon but when I opened the manhole, it was 70C, yeah that was never going to happen, thankfully I had an understanding customer

Tomorrows latest forecast is for 43C, and I have the day off work (4 day weekend for me :nena: ), if I manage to get up early enough to airbrush before it get way to hot to spray I will get the primer down on r2's head

R2 is FINISHED!!

I have runs on the board for this year!!

Glossed coated him with X-22 thinned with MLT 50:50, man that sprays beautifully!

Anyway, here are the finished pics

Had an issue with the little copper coloured lines from his feet to the batteries??
All of them bar 1 broke either getting them off the sprue or when installing them. The last 1 broke into 3 different pieces, of which I could only find 2. Thinking about drilling it out and placing a piece of copper wire in there, will have a hunt around the shed to see what I can find over the next day or so....

Feedback is more than welcome :cheers2:

Copper wire would be the way to go and easy to bend and handle, but that looks great as is

Had a break between jobs today, so was able to duck home and have a look at BB-8
Tried mixing the orange as per the instructions.... came out a dark pink!

Ok, scratch that idea, my BB-8 Will just be painted with the colours I have on hand...

That being lambo orange, gloss white and titanium silver

Sneak peek at the final colours

ImageImage

The orange isn't quite so dark in real life, and I'm hoping against the white and silver it should look quite good

Haven't shot the white yet, my cheapo airbrush threw a seal while cleaning out the orange :wall:

Have stripped it right back and cleaned, but I think I might have to retire it, not too bad out of it... got almost 3 years of life..

Going to have to break out the H&S

That's coming along nicely mate :)

Will you be doing a panel line wash on this one? I didn't do it on mine, but just looking at some of those BB-8 parts thinking it might be effective.

Yeah I was thinking about it, hopefully I did the 4 coats of white thin enough that it will take on the white sections

Still new to do a few things, finish some access panels, 1 antenna and his little blow torch arm.
Then a panel line and attach his eyes

I think the colour combo works ok

Have done a panel line wash and given a coat of X22

All the extra little parts have been shot with Ultimate gloss black ready for some x32 to be shot tomorrow

Unfortunately the panel wash didn't take on the white sections, too many coats trying to get good coverage I think

Quick question, does anyone else find that white when it is dry, is not very tough?
When I was putting his head together (wasn't wearing gloves) and I noticed if you put too much pressure on the parts, I would leave my finger prints in the white paint. It had been left to dry for 24hrs (Mr hobby gloss white H1, thinned 50/50 with mlt)

I'm wondering if that is a peculiarity of Mr hobby h1?

Both the tamiya x32 and Mr color orange (both thinned 50/50 with mlt) were resistant to this effect.

Ideas??

Haven't got any experience with the their gloss white, but I found others Aqueous colours were the same when thinned with levelling thinner. The levelling thinner is a lacquer thinner and will take an age to cure if every fully with acrylic, I have the same issue when I used H23 Shine Red even after a week in the airing cupboard it wasn't set.

I switched to aqueous thinners and it set but I couldn't get the surface finish/shine I was after. I switched to Mr Color Shine Red C79 and used a mix of Mr Color thinner and Levelling Thinner as per their recommendations, What a difference touch dry within a few minutes set in 8 hrs, perfect finish, had the same result with other colours in the range.

From now on if I want high gloss finish my go to paint is Mr Hobby Color :th:

Quick question, does anyone else find that white when it is dry, is not very tough?
When I was putting his head together (wasn't wearing gloves) and I noticed if you put too much pressure on the parts, I would leave my finger prints in the white paint. It had been left to dry for 24hrs (Mr hobby gloss white H1, thinned 50/50 with mlt)

I'm wondering if that is a peculiarity of Mr hobby h1?

Both the tamiya x32 and Mr color orange (both thinned 50/50 with mlt) were resistant to this effect.

Ideas??
Yep I have the same problems with MLT, warmth and time is the only cure (no pun intended) and when you have zero patience when it comes to waiting around and doing nothing like me, that causes me issues

And we are done!

All in all a great kit, a few errors that were my own making, mainly the finger prints in the white of bb-8's head

So here are his pics

I think his little flame came out quite well
