Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999

Post by Tomcat64 »

My entry for this year's Sci Fi GB will be MPC's Hawk Mk IX from Space 1999

Here's some background information from the kit along with some images I've pulled off t'interweb
Overview
Introduction
The Hawk spaceship as designed by Brian Johnson was first rendered in a quick sketch documenting the general layout, but the final look of the model was determined by an interpretation of that sketch combined with the most economical way to build it. At least three models of it were made at different scales including 15” and 30”. The largest “hero” model (presumably matching the 1/24th scale of the 44” Eagles) upon which this kit is based, was built specifically for Space:1999’s 1st season episode “War Games”.
Image
Entirely made from plastic, the model was relatively light weight compared to the Eagle models. The basic nosecone shape was made from sheet plastic vac-formed over carved wooden blocks and window panels also made from sheet plastic placed from the inside. Unlike the 44” Eagles, there was no cockpit interior made.
Image
The fuselage and main engine was made from 1/144 Saturn 1b and Saturn V kits, the boosters from sheet plastic wrapped around cardboard tubes. Detailing was made by kit-bashing other model kits including the Harrier jump jet, SRN4 hovercraft, Gemini capsule, Lunar Excursion Module, the Russian Vostok rocket and AMT semi truck parts. Found objects were also used such as wedding cake pillars and bed mattress vents simulating the underside VTOL thrusters. The rear engine bells were made from bottle caps and a tea dispenser set!
Image
The finished models were originally painted overall white with various grey panels and black anti-glare panels on the nosecone section like the Eagles. The 30” model was photographed as such for some of the widely seen publicity photos done for the show before the episode was actually filmed.
Image
It is reported that, just before initial effects photography of the episode, the director reasoned that the all-white paint job was considered too similar to the Eagles and may confuse viewers, so a last minute decision was made to add the orange sections to it to more obviously differentiate the ship from the Eagles. Artists at the studio quickly brush painted the models with Humbrol enamels (the actual orange colour is unknown but thought by some to be Humbrol #18) and also changed the anti-glare panels to white to make it much more distinguishable to the audience. That is how the model was filmed for the episode and as portrayed on the main box art of this kit.
Image
However, after filming the episode, and as seen in the famous Blackpool Exhibition of Gerry Anderson props and models, the anti-glare panels on the nosecone were repainted black. Many publicly produced photos were published in various magazines in this final state. Therefore all three different paint schemes made it into the mainstream through casual photographs of the model at various stages of its existence and remains a subject of confusion for many fans.

And here's the "bomber" they were escorting to Alpha

Onto the kit

This is a new tool from 2018 as opposed to the rehash of the 1977 kit so it'll be interesting to see the quality of the moulds for this one.

Here are the parts

Yep it is the 1/72 version.

They also do a 1/48 kit but I don't think I've got room for that :)

This is the 1/72 version as per the build for $29.99 or you can get the bigger 1/48 one for $49.99 - and yes, my fingers are twitching towards the wallet!!

      Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part I

      Post by Tomcat64 »

Thanks for checking in chaps - I had a quick look this morning and there were a couple of the 1/72 versions available on Amazon & e-bay so they're still around. I was a little surprised as being a 2018 release I thought there'd be more of them out there.

Anyways... I spent some of yesterday cutting & gluing styrene before getting distracted by the British Grand Prix...

Part number 3 forms the anti-glare panel & screen section so I thought that'd be easier to mask & paint up before installing... the anti-glare panels are NATO black & the screens are a semi-gloss black to give a little variation, the white frames are white-grey which will make up the majority of the paintwork
      Image

I then assembled all the subsections on the first page of the instructions - I've left the engine bells & RCS pods off for now for ease of painting
      Image

As well as tidying up the mould lines I also drilled out each of the nozzles on the RCS clusters to add a little definition
      Image

The fit is a little imprecise in places so there'll be some filling & sanding to tidy things up a bit, but here are the subassemblies dry-fitted & lined up
      Image

And that's as far as I got - hopefully I can potter away at this in the week.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
      Cheers, Neil

Thats looking good!! Have you decided which paint scheme you are going for - the original white all over or the later orange panels?

Thanks both - this one will definitely have the orange panels for just for the experience of spraying something orange for a change :)

Planning on the Orange panels with the black anti-glare panels so a bit of a hybrid; interestingly the anti-glare panels were also provided as decals in case you didn't fancy fiddling about with the masking which is a nice touch.

Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part II

        Post by Tomcat64 »

This one has rattled along nicely in the evenings this week.

The sub-assemblies from page 2 of the instructions were completed
        Image

This mostly focused on the engine down the back end
        Image

And here's how it looks overall with a quick dry fit at this stage
        Image

Onto page 3 and this is mostly adding some spindly frame stuff
        Image

        Underneath
        Image

        And up top
        Image

So that's the assemblies done and here's the collection of parts
        Image

Next up I need to spend some time sorting out the joins and remaining seams and then it'll be ready for primer.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
        Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part III

          Post by Tomcat64 »

Managed to get some masking & painting done this week despite the warm temperatures...

First up the black sections in the nose were masked off again
          Image

Then some Ultimate white was used in the areas to receive the orange - I was a little worried that it might be tricky to spot the white primer against the "white" plastic but it shows up ok as the plastic is a kind of off-white
          Image

And three coats of Vallejo "Orange Rust" later...
          Image

The orange sections were then masked off and the rest given a coat of Ultimate black primer followed by a couple of coats of Vallejo White Grey. Sorry I didn't take any photos of the process - but here are the results once it was unpeeled
          Image

There is some tidying up to do as the masking slipped in a couple of places presumably due to the aforementioned temps
          Image

But it looks like it's heading in the right direction
          Image

So tidying up, metal work & detailing and then some decals for the coming week with any luck,

Thanks as always for looking & have a great weekend :cheers2:

Thanks mate; some parts were better than others in terms of flash & mould seams so it was a bit hit & miss.

Some of the sprue gates on the delicate parts could have been more sympathetic - but overall not a bad kit at all.

That's come up a treat. Very smooth paint job and the orange is a great contrast to the white.

Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part IV

            Post by Tomcat64 »

So with a week off for the Air Tattoo and because it was too damned hot to try & do anything in the den I managed to get back to the Hawk this week.

I started by tidying up some of the paintwork and then spent some more time tidying up the tidying up... :violin:

Then it was a few sessions of decaling to get all the markings down
            Image

            And up top
            Image

I'll leave these to set properly and then seal them in before starting on some weathering.

Just a quick update but thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
            Cheers, Neil

I'm not planning on going OTT with the weathering, just want to give it a black wash & wipe to accentuate all the panels.

            Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part V

            Post by Tomcat64 »

Just the one photo for this update, but in terms of work I gave all the components a coat of AquaGloss followed by a wash & wipe with a black clay wash. The results were then given a coat of Ultra-Matte to seal everything in.

The kit included a simple display base so I checked how this went together as well - and it looks pretty effective to me :) I'll keep it simple and just paint it plain black.
            Image

The thruster pods & solar panel array are just dry fitted for now but I wanted to see how it looked.

So all that's left to do is the metal work around the thrusters and final assembly - hopefully I'll have this one over the line by the end of the week :)

            Thanks for looking :cheers2:

Tomcat's MPC Hawk - Space 1999 - Build Part VI

            Post by Tomcat64 »

A couple of useful evenings at the bench has seen this one done :)

First the thrusters underneath the main body were brush painted with a black undercoat followed by Scalecolor Black Metal
            Image

The metal sections of the main drive again were undercoated in black and then picked out with Black Metal, Vallejo Oily Steel and the engine bell was given a base of Vallejo Metal Colour Exhaust Manifold followed by a top coat of Aluminium on the outside (leaving the inside in Exhaust Manifold for some contrast).
            Image

Boosters were finished off in a similar fashion with the RCS nozzles in Black Metal & the engine bells in the Exhaust Manifold/Aluminium combo
            Image

The gun pods had the front end painted in dark grey and the nozzle picked out again with Black Metal - these look a little shabby in close up as the milling isn't great around the rear band but I think they're ok when installed...
            Image

Here's the collection of bits ready for assembly :)
            Image

But just one last twist in the tail - when installing the main drive section two "prongs" snapped clean off, so with some creative bodging they've been replaced with short lengths of Evergreen styrene rod
            Image

And painted up appropriately - it's not perfect but mostly hidden behind the port booster :shifty:
            Image

Last thing to do was give the base a couple of coats of Ultimate black and I think we'll call this one done
            Image

Here it is up on the stand - all being well I'll dig out the proper camera & do some reveal pics in the next couple of days
            Image

Thanks as always for stopping by & offering encouragement :cheers2:

Edit: The reveal is now up here
            Cheers, Neil

Thanks Ben - for a ship that only appeared in one episode it picked up quite a cult following.
