M1A1 ABRAMS Tamiya

Post by AlkaSeltzer »

This will be my entry into the Modern Armour SIG. I am going to try to make this into a 1980's Cold War NATO AFV.

This seems to be a pretty easy model to build.

I may use other tracks because the ones included seem to be weak.

If you guys use the Hull hanging APU..... ? As shown in picture above.

Do not install the Turret bustle APU! You would create a Frankenstein

The hull Hanging APU was tested that way...... In the mid 80's And later superseded with
The Turret bustle APU.... when fielded to the operational units!

Which later was superseded buy an Under Armour APU installed inside the Left Rear fuel cell! Which was later superseded by a Bank of batteries.... In the same fuel cell area. By then... The turret bustle APU had been replaced with an Air conditioning unit! Seen on the M1A2 SEP.

Good luck and happy modeling!

It also dictates where the vehicle has served!

State side? Stationed in Germany or South Korea or served in Desert Storm 1 or 2
With the US Army or US Marines ? Or during OIF or OEF

Hope the instructions are clear ? .... Been a while since I made one!
usually Tamiya has done their research...

Take care! If you want to upgrade it? You can always shave off that Hull APU and
Make your tank a more recent one? There is still time.

Looking forward to your next update !

Happy modeling. :cheers2:

Coming on nicely there mate. I am building my Abrams just now as well.

Cheers Norm for the info on the APU, I did wonder why my SEP TUSK II had an air con unit in the bustle basket and not an APU.

Oh !

One point I forgot....

If you depict a M1A2 with an Under Armour APU.. ( APU inside left rear Fuel cell ) The Corresponding Fuel cap needs to be shaven off
if not done by the company ! Sometimes Model companies offer multiple variants and forget to give you the correct outline... and leave Artifact items on their moulds.... so!

Don't leave the Rear Left Fuel armored Cap on the Deck, if doing one of those... !
if you do older variants with APU in bustle ? or Hanging APU.. that fuel cap can stay...

Take care people.

Norm. OUT !

I love the Abrams! Nice work on this so far, too. Say all you want about those new, super detailed kits with a thousand parts, but I really like those good old Tamiya kits!

Nothing wrong with Tamiya kits as you mentioned....
its true... No anti slip surface but... ease of assembly is second to none !

I rather build them... than an over engineered DML Dragon !
although... Their upcoming release will be hard to beat ! its still going to be overwhelming thou...

If only they could work on their instructions....

as for this Build !

You are doing great progress and Glad you are enjoying Tamiya engineering !

save up and get their TUSK 2 it is a nice kit !

Later mate !
